Hope you’re all having a lovely week so far!  There are a LOT of Bermuda happenings coming up so let’s get right down to it:

Whether you are vacationing to Bermuda, or are a local looking to entertain visiting guests, the unique Bermuda Rendezvous Activities programme allows you to experience our island culture, arts and entertainment.  Between the months of November and March, Bermuda Rendezvous Activities provides you with a wide range of family-friendly activities, from guided tours to Gombey dancing, glassblowing to cooking.  Most of the daily activities listed are free, unless otherwise indicated. Many of the activities featured in this programme have been arranged in partnership with the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and the Department of Tourism. Fr. Attilio, Pastor of St. Michael’s Church is hosting An Itinerary through the Book of Jonah on Wednesday, October 30th.  This discussion will be in the light of Christian and Jewish tradition, discovering how much this small book of the Bible has to do with our daily life.  For more information, contact stmichaels@logic.bm.

Illusion Entertainment are hosting a frightfully good party while raising money for a good cause at their Halloween Bash & Casino Happy Hour at Grand Café on Thursday, October 31st.  The evening will begin with Crown & Anchor, Black Jack and Roulette from 5.30pm until 8pm. There will also be drinks specials throughout the night, a photo area, costume party competition and best dance moves competition.  The first 50 people to arrive will receive a goody bag and there will also be the chance to win a tablet and other prizes.  Proceeds will benefit Tae Durham, a 22 year old suffering from development complications as a result of being a paraplegic from birth.  Admission is $20, or $15 with a costume, and includes one free drink plus hors d’oevres. On Friday, November 1st, Queen Street’s retailers and restaurants will be teaming up for Queen Street’s First Ever Halloween Boo Bash!  From 5.30pm until 7.30pm, they will be providing safe trick-or-treating environment for kids aged 12 and under.  There will be a costume parade at Lemon Tree Cafe from 7pm with prizes for Best Costume, Most Creative Costume and much more, while staff from Daisy & Mac will be dressing up and handing out candy as well as mini giveaways and spooky punch.  Retailers and Restaurants on Queen St who are also participating in this fun, free community activity include Lemon Tree Cafe, Daisy’s, Kolorz, Choices, Leisure Time, KFC and Bermuda Book Store.  For more information, contact 295-7477.

The Corporation of St. George’s Activities Committee invite you to dress in costume and bring a chair to their Halloween Scavenger Hunt and Movie Night on Friday, November 1st.  The Scavenger Hunt will begin at 7pm in King’s Square, finishing in plenty of time for the screening of Hotel Transylvania at 9pm.  Admission is free and refreshments will be on sale.

 

 

 

Barmuvinjam’s Halloween Party will be taking place at Margarita’s Grill on Friday, November 1st.   This costume only party will run from 10pm until 3am and, since there is no particular theme, you can let your imagination go wild.  Tickets are $20 and available from Secrets or Kit n ‘Caboodle.

 

 

 

 

 

The Anglican Church of Bermuda is hosting three lectures by Revd. Dr. Alister E. McGrath, author of Glimpsing the Face of God, on Saturday, November 2nd and Sunday, November 3rd. The lecture with Q&A, Engaging with the World, will run from 10am until noon at St. Paul’s Christian Education Centre in Paget on Saturday, November 2nd.  The second lecture with Q&A, Faith in a Scientific Age, will run from 2pm until 4pm at St. Paul’s Christian Education Centre in Paget on Saturday, November 2nd.  The third and final lecture, C. S. Lewis and the Life of Faith, will run from 2.30pm until 3.30pm in the Cathedral Hall on Church Street on Sunday, November 3rd.  There is no admission fee and all are welcome.  For more information, contact 292-6987.

The Beach House at Blackbeard’s Hideout is closing for the season on Saturday, November 2nd and plans to go out in style.  Their famous end of season event for 2013 is a Seafood and Pig Roast Blast, aiming to be Halloween and Guy Fawkes rolled into one, from 6.30pm.  On arrival you will be able to purchase a bag of assorted seafood (including lobster tail, corn, potato, clams, mussels and crab legs) in a bag and a bamboo pole that you can cook on the open fire cauldron.  After the seafood appetizer,  you can then enjoy Roasted Pig, cooked traditionally over an open fire and served with all the trimmings.  The signature drink, The Beach House Bacardi Sunset, will be featured at a buy one get one free offer for the evening and Randy Lambert will be providing entertainment.  The cost is $49 per person plus gratuities and reservations are required.  For more information, or to make a reservation, contact 297-1400 or Piero@stgeorgesclub.com.

Bermuda Folk Club are hosting their annual Paul Gibbons Memorial Night at Spanish Point Boat Club on Saturday, November 2nd.  Doors open at 7.30pm and music will be from 8pm.  All proceeds from the evening will go towards the Paul Gibbons Scholarship Fund which is given to local students committed to studying music.  The award each year is donated to a talented individual from the Bermuda School of Music.  Admission is $10 for non-members, $8 for members and there will be a cash bar.  For more information, contact secretary@folkclub.bm or visit www.folkclub.bm.

 

 

 

Hard Knocks & KB Custom presents The Laugh Out Loud Comedy Show at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Ball Room on Saturday, November 2nd from 8.30pm until 11.30pm.  Doors open at 7.45pm and the line up of international comedians includes Dino Vigo, Nathan Macintosh, Dawn B, and A G White, with host Joseph Vecsey.  Local comedians Nadanja, Bootsie and Eddie G will also be tickling your funny bone, with music by Juggin Jason.  General admission tickets cost $45 in advance from Choice’s or Secrets, $55 at the door, and $85 for VIP.  The after party will be held at Margarita’s Grill with music courtesy of YGS and Rusty G.  Entry is free for VIP ticket holders and $20 for everyone else.  For more information, contact kbusby36@gmail.com.

 

Fans of EDM Rave are in for a treat at Guy Fawkes vs Burning Man at Snorkel Park Beachon Saturday, November 2nd.  From 10pm until 3am, lLasers, glowsticks and a bonfire will help ensure the mood is right as the Old Skool corner is represented by DJ Bitsy and DJ Fozzy, playing the best in trance, DnB and house anthems, with Rusty G and Supa J playing electro, progressive and trap in the New Skool corner.   Admission is $10 before midnight and $15 after.

 

 

 

Hog Penny presents the return of Voodoo Wahoo from 10.30pm until 1am on Saturday, November 2nd.  Voodoo Wahoo comprises of Will Black (vocals/guitars), Keith White (guitars/vocals), Mike Jardine (bass) and Nick Wadson on drums.  As well as some new original songs, the band will also be playing tunes from Imagine Dragons, Mumford & Sons, Pearl Jame, the Rolling Stones, the Verve, Alice Cooper and more.  There is no cover charge.

 

 

Griffin’s Bistro at the St. George’s Club are turning back time and reintroducing their famous all day brunch extravaganza from the mid-eighties.  The Memories of the Margaret Rose Brunch will start on Sunday, November 3rd, from 11.30am until 7.30pm.  The menu will include favourites such as eggs, sausages, cod fish, antipasto, a carvery, seafood paella, salads, and more.  The cost is $49 per person, plus gratuities.  For more information, or to make a reservation, contact 297-1400 or piero@stgeorgesclub.com.

 

The Jazz & Soul Masters Pirate Festival on Sunday, November 3rd will be your last chance to see the Giant Steps Band in concert before they head to Cuba to perform at the Havana International Jazz Festival in December.  The island’s jazz and soul players have also been invited to perform and the Festival will start at 6pm at the Leopards Club.  Come dressed as a pirate and you will be in with a chance of winning a prize.  Tickets are $20 and available at the door only.  There will also be food for sale and a cash bar.  For more information, contact Dale Butler on 505-3409 or daledbutler@gmail.com.

 

They say that more people are scared of public speaking than death.   Whether you have that level of nervousness, or if you just want to develop your public speaking and leadership skills in a fun and supportive environment, Bermuda Toastmasters could be the perfect solution.  Toastmasters is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of meeting locations.  Bermuda Toastmasters meet on at the Chamber of Commerce on the first and third Tuesday of every month up until the summer break on June 3rd.  Anyone interested in joining is welcome to come and observe or feel free to participate.  For more information, contact bermudatm@gmail.com or visit www.toastmasters.org.

St. Paul’s Guild, along with the Bermuda Boys Brigade and Church Girls Brigade are having a Plant and Bake Sale with Car Wash on Saturday, November 9th.  This will take place at St. Paul’s in Paget from 9am until 2pm and will also include a craft, Christmas and White Elephant tables, raffles and games, and light refreshments on sale.

 

 

 

World Rugby Classic Week for 2013 will be running from Saturday, November 9th until Saturday, November 16th!

Full details are on www.worldrugby.bm but, since I’m a helpful sort of person, I thought it would be useful to have it listed out.  I’ll add in anything else as I find out about it:

The First Round Matches will be on Saturday, November 9th and gates open at 5.45pm. The Hospitality Village opens at 6pm, followed by the first game, Argentina vs. Canada, at 7.15pm, then the Classic Lions vs Italy at 8.30pm. From 10pm, there will be entertainment in the Tent Tavern.

On Monday, November 11th, gates open at 5.45pm and the Hospitality Village opens at 6pm, with more First Round Matches from France vs. South Africa at 7.15pm, Australia vs. USA at 8.30pm and entertainment in the Tent Tavern afterwards from 10pm.

After resting up on the Tuesday, the Plate Semi-Final will start at 7.15pm on Wednesday, November 13th, followed by the Classic Semi-Final at 8.30pm.  Gates open at 5.45pm, the Hospitality Village opens at 6pm and entertainment in the Tent Tavern will be afterwards from 10pm.

On Thursday, November 14th, the gates will open at 5.30pm and the Hospitality Village will open at 5.45pm. The first game will be Bermuda vs. Lloyds RFC at 6pm, followed by the Plate Semi-Final at 7.30pm which will pit Loser C against Loser D, and then the Classic Semi-Final at 8.45pm will have Winner C against Winner D, followed by entertainment in the Tent Tavern.

No games on Friday, November 15th but there will still be rugby fun to be had on the BRFU Rugby Booze Cruise!  Drink from a full bar, party with rugby players, dance to a live DJ and watch the sunset as the BRFU presents their annual Rugby Booze Cruise on board the M.V. Bermudian on Friday, November 15th.  Entertainment will be courtesy of Supatone and the boat will depart Front Street at 6pm, returning at 9pm, with a cash bar available.  Tickets are $20 ($15 for Classic players) and are available from Kit ‘n’ Caboodle, BRFU Members and on the boat.  For more information, contact devrae@brfu.bm.

 

 

By the last day, Saturday, November 16th, you can expect to see a lot of ill-looking people who have aged about ten years due to a combination of alcohol consumption and lack of sleep. Gates open at 5pm for 2013 Finals Day, with the Hospitality Village opening at 5.15pm. This will kick off with the Plate Final at 6.30pm, the Classic Final at 8pm and then the Farewell Party in the Tent Tavern from 9.30pm.

There are a few different options for admission:

The Members Tent is the VIP facility at the Classic. Here sponsors and guests can enjoy sit-down lunches or dinner (depending on playing time), an open bar and seating right behind the goal-line. A limited number of badges are available for the five match days at a cost of $1,125 per person. Daily badges are also available at at cost of $250 for Saturday, November 9th and Monday, $275 for Wednesday and Thursday, and $325 for Saturday, November 16th.  Tickets are available from www.pTix.bm or from John Kane at jkane@avondale.bm.

The Conning Classic Club membership package entitles you to daily entrance to the National Sports Centre and the Classic Club Tent, a larger tented area with touchline seating, a number of complimentary drinks, and a light supper/lunch (depending on playing time) before the start of play. The daily rate is $150 per person or $250 per couple. A 5-day pass costs $650 per person or $1,000 per couple. The Classic Club tent is also the facility set aside for the players to congregate, so you have the opportunity to meet, talk and drink with them. If you’d rather just have general admission, daily game passes are $25 or $100 for a 5-day pass and are available now at www.pTix.bm or at the gate.

 

 

Since Monday, November 11th is a public holiday, Chill Entertainment are hosting A Remembrance Day Winter White Party on Sunday, November 10th at Margarita’s Grill.  From 10pm, you can enjoy music by DJ LA, DJ Blazin Kid and a special guest DJ, a Drag Show at midnight and a complimentary jello shot at the door.  Admission is $20, or $15 for early bird tickets.

 

 

 

 

The monthly Ciné Club from L’Alliance Française des Bermudes will be showing Populaire on Tuesday, November 12th at 8pm at BUEI.  This is a French movie with English subtitles and tickets cost $5 for members, $10 for non-members and $5 for students.  Full details can be found at www.alliancefrancaise.bm.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dynamic and engaging speaker, Dr. Patrick Schwarz will be visiting Bermuda for a weekend of events on Learning and Inclusive Education.  From Disability to Possibility: A Discussion on Effectiveness in Education and Human Services for all People will be on Friday, November 15th.  From 7pm at Mount Saint Agnes Academy Auditorium, Dr. Schwarz will be using real life stories to illustrate what supports are successful and what else is needed.  This is a public meeting with no cover charge.  The following day on Saturday, November 16th, Dr. Swarz will be leading a workshop on Inclusive Education. Need a good reason to get out of bed on Saturday mornings during the winter months? The City Market will restart on Saturday, November 16th at its new location on the lower level of Pier 6 on Front Street.  This goes from 8am until 1pm every Saturday and features local vendors selling items grown or made by them, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, ceramics, jewellery, teas, baked goods, preserves and crafts. Definitely worth a wander!  The market will run until June 28th but will not be held on December 28th or January 4th.

 

 

Handpicked festive tipples paired with some favourite holiday appetizers are on offer at MAMA’s Annual Fundraiser and Christmas Wine Tasting on Friday, November 22nd.  This will be at Discovery Wines warehouse at 5 Bakery Lane from 7.30pm until 9.30pm.  In addition to the tasting, there will be a chance to bid for some great gifts in our Silent Night Auction as well as the chance to buy wine at discounted prices.  Tickets are $60 and can be purchased from social@mama.bm.  Proceeds will benefit SCARS and St John’s Food Bank.

Panto season is almost upon us (oh yes, it is) and this year’s offering from Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society is fairytale favourite, Sleeping Beauty.  This festive family show will run at the Daylesford Theatre from Thursday, December 5th until Saturday, December 14th with nightly performances at 6.30pm and 8.30pm.  On December 7th, 8th and 14th, there will not be an 8.30pm performance but there will be matinees at 2pm and 4pm in addition to the 6.30pm show.  Tickets are $30 and can be purchased online from November 11th at www.bmds.bm or from their physical box office.  Please see the flyer or www.bmds.bm for further details of box office opening hours.

 

 

Something to get you in the holiday spirit, the In Motion School of Dance presents The Nutcracker Holiday Spectacular on Friday, December 13th and Saturday, December 14th at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts, at Cedarbridge Academy.  This will feature Act II of the Nutcracker and other seasonal classics with showtime is at 7pm each night and a 2pm matinee on the Saturday.  Spaces are limited and tickets are $40 from www.pTix.bm.  The cast of the Nutcracker will also be hosting a Tea Party at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Sunday, November 24th.  From 3pm until 5pm, attendees will be able to enjoy tea, crafts and a sneak peak of excerpts from The Nutcracker  performance.  Tickets are $35 or $55 for patrons and available on www.pTix.bm.

January can be a bit of a comedown after all the excitement of the holiday season so it’s always nice to see something come along to brighten it up.  One of my favourite events of the year, Just for Laughs Bermuda, will be at the Fairmont Southampton Mid-Ocean Ampitheatre from Thursday, January 9th until Saturday, January 11th.  Alonzo Bodden is coming back to host, and three international comics, Robert Kelly (USA), Will Syvince (USA) and Steve Patterson (Canada) along with local talent Jonathan Young will be performing.  Thursday night will have cabaret-style seating at round tables of 4, 6 or 10 and will cost $87 per person. The show will begin at 8pm and drinks and finger food will be available for sale at your table.  One lucky attendee to the Thursday evening show will win one night at the Fairmont Southampton for two, with their choice of January 9th, 10th or 11th. Everyone who purchases tickets online is automatically entered and the winner will be notified by December 31st.  Friday and Saturday have theatre-style seating and tickets are $77 or $87 for reserved seating. The Friday show starts at 8.30pm and on Saturday, there are two shows at 7pm and 10pm.   In addition to JFL, Alonzo Bodden and Robert Kelly will be sharing the stage in Double Bill at the Earl Cameron Theatre at City Hall on Wednesday, January 8th at 8pm and tickets are $45 for reserved seating.  Tickets are on sale from 8am on Monday, November 4th at www.BDAtix.bm.  The Waterlot Inn and Newport GastroPub will be offering pre-show menus, and there will be a special room rate of $159 at the Fairmont Southampton.
