Calling all photographers, the world’s largest photography event is coming to Bermuda! Scott Kelby’s Annual Worldwide Photowalk will take place on Saturday, October 5th, with the Bermuda leg taking place at Spittal Pond. From 8am until 10am, this walk is designed to explore the varied landscape found at Spittal Pond including ponds, scrubland, forested areas, hills and coastline. After the walk, photographers are invited to meet at North Rock Brewing Co. to review the shots or just hang out. There is also an optional competition aspect where you are invited to upload your favourite photo from the walk for a chance of winning a prize. Discovery Wines will be hosting their next Wine Class, entitled Demystifying French Wines, on Saturday, October 5th. Attendees will get to sample between five and six French wines and the class will run from 1pm until 3pm in their newly renovated warehouse on Bakery Lane in Pembroke. The cost is $40 per person. Interested in adding the ultimate personal touch to your letter writing? The Bermuda Botanical Society is hosting a Paper-Making Workshop at the Visitors Centre in the Botanical Gardens on Saturday, October 5th. From 4pm until 6pm, award-winning Bermudian artist Ami Zanders will demonstrate how to make paper from locally-found plant materials. The Self Preservation Society is celebrating 50 Years of Mod and its Influences at the Mariners Club on Saturday, October 5th. This will be an evening of British 60s, 80s MOD, Revival, Rad Ska, Northern Soul and BritPop music, with a live guest performance by the Crazy Wednesdays. There is no cover charge so you just need to bring your friends and your dancing shoes. Doors open at 9pm.
The opening event for the Argo Group Gold Cup will be the Family Festival of Sail on Sunday, October 6th at Barr’s Bay Park. From 11am until 4pm, you can expect sail boat rides, fun castles, live entertainment, free face painting, games, boat safety and first aid seminars, displays about early Bermuda sailors and pilots, food stalls, and music from HOTT 107.5. Admission is free.
The Argo Group Gold Cup, the oldest match-racing trophy in the world for competition involving one-design yachts, is here from Tuesday, October 8th until Sunday, October 13th. The public is welcome at the match racing regatta, press conferences, prize-giving and parties and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) restaurants and bars are open to the public throughout, from the Family Festival of Sail opening event until the finals. The main public party will be the Rock the Dock Bacardi Rum Party on Friday, October 11th. This will be at RBYC from 6.30pm until midnight and tickets are available directly from RBYC. A Bermuda Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is in the works for 2014 and Andrew Watt, CEO and President of AFP International, will be on the island next week to give presentations on fundraising and philanthropy to donors and nonprofits. There are two different Focus on Philanthropy talks on Wednesday, October 9th, both at The Centre on Philanthropy at Sterling House on Wesley Street. The first is a breakfast talk for non-profits from 9am until 10.30am. The talk will cover fundraising success stories and how they relate to Bermuda, when and how to invest in your organization’s fundraising, when to hire a professional fundraiser, and an overview of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The lunchtime talk from noon until 1.30pm will cover corporate responsibility trends, global trends in philanthropy, the importance of professional fundraisers and accreditation, and an overview of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Aiming to promote the mission of the Bermuda SPCA, the Bermuda SPCA Animal Expo 2013 will take place in the Botanical Gardens on Saturday, October 12th from 10am until 4pm. This family-friendly event will feature a kid’s game area, dog parades and demos, cat show, critter chatter, fun castle, face painting, food and treats. Parking is $4 per vehicle (Berry Hill entrance only) but admission is free, although a donation of a can of cat or dog food would be welcomed. For more information, contact 236-7333 or info@spca.bm.
The Bermuda Shakespeare Schools Festival is coming back to the Berkeley Institute from Monday, October 12th to Wednesday, October 14th. This event enables local high school students to perform the works of William Shakespeare in a professional theatre setting and supports further studies in the dramatic arts. On Monday, October 14th, Saltus Grammar School will be performing Much Ado About Nothing, followed by Cedarbridge Academy with Measure for Measure. On Tuesday, October 15th, the Bermuda High School will give their interpretation of Cymbeline while the Berkeley Institute will present Othello. On the final night, Wednesday, October 16th, Warwick Academy will be performing Hamlet followed by Romeo and Juliet by Somersfield Academy. Showtime is at 7pm each evening. The Fall edition of the Bermuda Documentary Film Festival (Bermuda Docs) will be from Thursday, October 17thth until Sunday, October 20th in the usual venue of the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI. This year’s line-up includes such varied subject matters as Muhammad Ali’s choice of belief and conscience over fame and fortune, Rwanda’s first and only women’s drumming troupe, 60 years as an international jewel thief and more. Screenings will begin at 6pm on the Thursday and Friday, 2pm on the Saturday and 3pm on the Sunday. If the way to your heart if through your stomach, you will love this event. Bermuda’s Rising Chef of the Year Competition will run from Wednesday, October 23rd to Friday, November 1st and each round will take place at International Imports (The Chef’s Shop) on Par-la-ville between 5.45pm and 9.30pm. There are four nights of Semi-finals on October 23rd, 24th, 28th and 29th. There will be three or four competitors each night and they must must utilize a set number of ingredients from a Mystery Basket. They have 25 minutes to prepare and plate an entrée, and ticket holders get a ‘taste’ portion of every meal prepared, paired with wines from Gosling’s Ltd. One winning competitor will be selected each night by a panel of judges to compete in the Final round and attendees get to vote for Audience Favourite. There will be four competitors in the Final Round on Friday, November 1st, all vying to win the title of Bermuda’s Rising Chef of the Year. Tickets cost $95 for the semi-finals, $125 for the final, and are available from International Imports. The ticket price includes pre-assigned seating, 5 courses paired with Gosling’s beverages, a chance to win an invitation to a Riedel glass workshop and wine tasting, and one vote for Audience Favourite. A great shopping opportunity for those with green fingers will be on Saturday, October 26th as the Bermuda Botanical Society is hosting their Annual Plant Sale. This will be held in the JJ Outerbridge Building in the Botanical Gardens and will be open to the public from 9am until 1pm. The sale will open a little earlier at 8.30am for members. The Mariners RFC Annual Halloween Party for 2013 will be on Saturday, October 26th at Flanagan’s and Outback. From 8pm until 2am, there will be frightfully good music by DJ Fozzy, prizes and drinks specials from Gosling’s. Tickets are $25 in advance from inash99@hotmail.com or any MRFC member. A limited number will also be sold at the door for $35.
Bermuda Arts and Fitness Academy presents the 14th Martial Arts Tournament and Demonstrations on Sunday, October 27th. This will be at Sandys 360 from 1pm until 6pm and invited schools include Bermuda Jujitsu Karate Club, Hekigan Dojo, Bermuda Karate Institute, Zenji Ryu, Bermuda Tae Kwon Do Association, and many more. Bermuda Gombeys and the Bermuda African Dance Company will also be featured, with door prizes and 1st place trophies available. Admission is $10 for adults or $5 for children until 12. If you have a sporty youngster on your hands, then this might be right up their alley. The International Fitness Pros Youth Training Academy Mid-Term Camp will run from Monday, October 28th to Friday, November 1st at Somersfield Academy. This is for boys and girls aged between 5 and 15 years old and the young athletes will be introduced to speed & agility training, core stability, fitness & strength, nutrition & stretching, and injury & rehab. Start time is at 9am sharp with an 8.30am drop off, finishing at 4pm. Attendees should bring turf shoes/sneakers, shirt, shorts, tracksuit bottoms, towel, water and lunch. They say that you shouldn’t work with children or animals but there is always an exception to the rule as your kids have a chance to win gift certificates for your family pet at Passion Paw Paws Children’s Halloween Drawing Contest during the month of October. This is open to kids aged between 3 and 13 and each budding artist can submit one drawing depicting their family pet in a Halloween setting on 8.5 x 11 paper. There are prizes in three categories up for grabs – most funny, most unique and most cute. The deadline is October 28th and winners and their drawings will be announced on October 31st at www.Facebook.com/PassionPawPaws. Bermuda Resident Ian Nash will once again be heading to Nicaragua to help the people in the villages surrounding San Ramon. The CashforNash Mission Fundraiser will be on Friday, November 29th at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. From 6pm until 9pm, you can enjoy a Wine Tasting & Silent Auction, including 6 different wines from South America and Spain and appetisers. Tickets are $60 and available from www.pTix.bm. Spaces are limited to to 200 people. Funds will help complete the construction of the school, church, medical facility and will help purchase medical supplies that are desperately needed. One of my favourite events of the year, the Bermuda National Trust Christmas Walkabout in St. George’s will be on Friday, December 6th. If you haven’t been to this before, you get to stroll through St. George’s, enjoying all the seasonal festivities (musical entertainment, historic readings, Christmas goodies, etc.), with many historic buildings and private homes open to the public. Lots of them also give you free egg-nog, mulled wine and other seasonal treats! Kick-off is at 6.30pm and, as well as festive, it is also free! We all missed it last year but the Bermuda Christmas Boat Parade is back for 2013! This year’s Boat Parade will be on Saturday, December 7th (rain date Sunday, December 8th) and will begin at 6.30pm, departing from the Fairmont Hamilton Princess and travelling clockwise around White’s Island. There are prizes for the best boats in ten categories and entry is free. To be eligible for any awards, your boat must be registered before noon on December 6th – you can reserve online at www.bermudaboatparade.bm. For more information, contact 295-0530 or submit@bm.bm.
