Well, if you’re a fan of dress-up, then it looks like you’re going to have a ball this Halloween as the celebrations will be over two weekends this year. There are lots of events to choose from so it’s just a matter of deciding which ones you’d like to grace with your presence. Here is the latest rundown of the best things to do in Bermuda this Fall:
Attendees at Latin Dancers’ Delight tonight at Margarita’s Grill will have a little extra treat. Instead of the regular DJ’d music, you can dance to live Latin jazz courtesy of Bermuda’s own, Giant Steps Band from 9pm. In addition, the Salsa Friends Classes offered from 7pm will feature an Intro to Bachata along with Salsa at the Beginners class at 7pm and Intro to Rueda at the Intermediate class at 8pm. Time to feed those brain cells with spices as Quiz & Curry Night has returned to Bermuda Bistro at the Beach! Every Wednesday night from 8pm, participating teams can enjoy food and drink specials, cash prizes and giveaways and a grand prize for the overall season winner. The cost is $5 per person. If you’re interested in helping to strike down breast cancer then this could be right up your alley. To mark October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Strykz Bowling Lounge are hosting a Bowling for Boobs fundraising event from 6pm on Thursday, October 17th. The cost is $30 per bowler, for 2 games with teams of 5, and all proceeds will be donated to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. For more information, contact strykz@live.com.
You are invited to bring the whole family to enjoy all the fun of the fair as Mount Saint Agnes Academy (MSA) Bazaar presents Comic Life on Friday, October 18th and Saturday, October 19th. From 10am until 10pm, you can enjoy various games, the mechanical bull, or indulge in fair favourites such as cotton candy, popcorn and freshly made Portuguese donuts. Raffle tickets are available from any student or at the School for $10, with prizes including 2 flat screen TVs, kitchen appliances, and many others. Admission is $4 or free for children under 5.
Northshore Medical & Aesthetics Center promise to reveal some of Hollywood’s best kept secrets at their Open House on Saturday, October 19th. From 10am until 2pm, you can see their new facility, learn about their many services (including dermatology and laser lipo), see live demonstrations from their certified staff, and meet and greet with Dr. Kyjuan Brown , Preston Ephriam and therapists. From 2pm until 5pm, attendees will save up to 50% on select treatments, including massages, waxing, microderms, laser treatments, skin tightening and more. As already mentioned, TEDx Bermuda is happening on Saturday, October 19th. Organisers have also added a free-entry wrap party for attendees and speakers after the event at Wickets in the Fairmont Southampton. There is a cash bar, live music from Bones with a buffet style dinner at $50 per head. Tickets for the dinner are bookable until October 15th through www.pTix.bm.
Food, snacks and fun are promised at the Kings of Construction (KOC) Block Party at Victoria Park on Sunday, October 20th. From noon until 5pm, you can enjoy a fun-filled day of friendly competition, a kids zone with fun castles, face-painting, tattoos and more, and a wide variety of food vendors. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Great news for folks who like their wine as red as their meat as Ten Cafe & Bar are hosting a Cows and Cabs evening at 7pm on Wednesday, October 23rd. Chef Mike Knight has created a special 5 course menu of unusual preparations of certified Angus beef, paired with tastings of fine cabernets. The cost is $75 per person. As part of the Bermuda Folklife Documentary Series, the Vegetarian Society of Bermuda in collaboration with Chewstick will be hosting a movie night featuring the local film, Medicinal Uses of Plants. on Thursday, October 24th. Admission is $5 per person and the screening will start at 5.30pm at Chewstick HQ. Back by popular demand, just in time for Halloween, John Cox, historian and author of Bermuda Hauntings and Bermuda’s Favourite Haunts will be at Bermuda National Library (upper floor) on Thursday, October 24th for the third Bermuda Hauntings event. From 6.30pm to 8.pm, you can hear John Cox share stories of spirits, those gifted (or cursed) to know the future, and information about some of the more famous haunts in Bermuda, and share your own experiences and family stories. John Cox’s books will also be available for purchase on the night. Admission is free but space is limited so registration is required. Bermuda High School for Girls (BHS) invite you to enjoy a haunted house, games, prizes, a costume parade and more, at the BHS Halloween Fair on Friday, October 25th. This event will take place on the BHS Field from 5.30pm until 8pm. Tickets are $15 which includes your choice of a hot dog or chili, one drink and one dessert item (apple or cookie). Sandys 360 invite you to come out to the next in their Fall Movie Night Series on Friday, October 25th. This will be at the Sandys Secondary Middle School Amphitheatre from 7pm until 9pm with the feature being the animated movie Epic. Admission is $5 per person with snacks, popcorn and drinks available for sale in the reception area. All attendees must register by October 23rd. Halloween fun for everyone is promised at BUEI’s annual Underwater Underworld event on Saturday, October 26th from 1pm until 4pm. This haunted underworld will include a costume contest, face-painting, spooky crafts, a scavenger hunt, bake sale, games, giveaways, and more. In Motion Dancers will also be providing additional entertainment with a performance of Thriller. This event is free for members and children under 4, and $5 for non-members. The 4th Annual Pick Your Own Pumpkins will be at Astwood Park on Saturday, October 26th. From 9am until 2pm, you can expect face painting, hay-rides, caramel apples, cider and lots of fun. Children who wear costumes will be given a treat. There is no admission fee and the price of pumpkins ranges between $13 and $24, depending on the size. Think you’re in pretty decent shape? The conclusion of 2013′s Bermuda Triple Challenge series, the Royal Challenge, invites you to prove your worth on Sunday, October 27th. Teams of three will tackle the unknown on a 5km course with 14 obstacles, experiencing parts of Royal Naval Dockyard that few have explored or seen before, while raising money for charity (Friends of Hope Academy and Beyond Rugby, a programme of The Family Centre) at the same time. Categories are Female Only, Male Only, Mixed, Corporate and Youth Team (aged 14 to 18). A week of fun-filled adventure awaits 4 to 11 year olds at Camp Pioneers running from Monday, October 28th until Friday, November 1st. Camp Pioneers is based at the Temperance Hall Church in Hamilton Parish, near The Market Place, and a typical camp week will offer arts, crafts, education time, educational and fun field trips, play time, movies, library visits, and a host of other activities that aim to be both fun and learning opportunities for young campers. Activities are highlighted in a booklet that’s sent to camp parents/guardians in advance and, recognising that times are tough, the camp tries to plan activities that are free or relatively low in cost and works closely with venues to obtain discounted prices for campers during field trips. The cost is $120 per child and there are also Junior Counsellor opportunities available fro 12 to 15 year olds. CNN Hero of the Year Winner Anuradha Koirala will be visiting Bermuda to give a special presentation entitled, Fighting the Atrocities of Human Trafficking, on Tuesday, October 29th at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute. Ms. Koirala, world renowned activist and founder of Maiti Nepal, is instrumental in fighting to protect Nepali girls and women from crimes such as sex trafficking, domestic violence, child prostitution and child labour. This event is in association with The Women’s Resource Centre. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 6pm, followed by the presentation itself at 6.30pm. Curious about the laws of karma, reincarnation and meditative chanting? Anya Ozarowska aims to cover all three in an inspiring and down-to-earth manner at the seminar Karma & Reincarnation Explained on Tuesday, October 29th at My Sereni-Tea. From 7pm until 9pm, they promise a life-changing discussion about the essential aspects of our life, including a discussion on ghosts. Lemon Tree Café and Par-la-ville Park will be transformed into a beautifully spooky venue for A Nightmare on Queen Street on Friday, November 1st. From 8pm until 2am, your host will be the Town Crier Ghost, with entertainment courtesy of street performers, resident DJ Uncle, The Big Chill’s DJ Felix Tod with Neil Burnie on sax, Crown & Anchor and a few surprise pop-up performers. This is an opportunity to support the Bermuda Heart Foundation who will have apple-bobbing, pumpkin brain squashing and face-painting, while Lemon Tree will have some of its legendary BBQ for sale along with Peroni Beer and Pink-a-Weenie specials. Not only are full Halloween costumes strongly encouraged but there is a prize for the best one. This event is for a mature and open-minded audience and will take place rain, blow or high moon. There is no cover charge thanks to sponsors Lemon Tree Cafe, Peroni, MarketPlace, Class Act Designs and the Corporation of Hamilton, and a portion of proceeds will be donated to the Bermuda Heart Foundation.
