How to keep Dad’s Car looking and running like new
How many times have we made our husbands clean our car or make sure it’s working properly? Give your husband a day off this Father’s Day, grab your kids, and impress him with a gift he’ll love: a car that is in tip-top shape. Brandon Miller, an instructor at Universal Technical Institute’s Dallas campus, offers easy tips to have Dad’s car looking and running like new.
Clean the vehicle inside and out. Vacuum the carpets, wipe down the dashboard and clean all of the glass. Get the kids involved by having them help scrub off all of the dirt and grime on the exterior of the vehicle. Remove any excess weight from the car like boxes or books. Extra weight can decrease gas mileage by one to two percent for every 100 pounds.
Fill up the tank. A full tank of gas will go a long way to ensure your husband has a great start to the workweek. To make it extra special, pick up his favorite snack from the gas station and put it in the front seat for a Monday morning treat.
Inspect the tires. Check air pressure on all tires (including the spare tire) as tires that are not properly inflated could be costing you gas mileage. Also check and inspect each tire for bulges and bald spots. If the tires need more air, go to your local gas station to fill them up. If you’re not comfortable checking the air pressure, bring it to your local automotive technician to have them take a look.
Give Dad’s car a professional tune up. Many times Dad will push a professional tune up to the bottom of the list as he balances work and family time. Take your husband’s car to a local automotive technician for an oil change, tire rotation and brake check. The technician can also check the A/C to make sure it is working properly.
If your husband is a car fanatic who loves to take care of his car, give him a gift he’ll really use: his own car wash kit. Have your kids decorate a bucket and fill it with items like soap, a sponge, a towel, wax, tire cleaner, and glass cleaner. That way, he’ll be set to take care of his car for the rest of the year.
