Matt & Phreds
Skamel
Skamel came together to explore the music of Raspigaous, a French-Arabic Ska and Dub outfit. Since then their set has grown to feature mostly original compositions along with some arrangements of various other Ska and Jazz classics, all influenced by their love of jazz and inspired by the French Reggae scene. Individually, the musicians have many successes, having won awards such as ‘European Young Jazz Artists of the year, 2011‘ and ‘Jazz FM’s Best UK Newcomer 2013‘ and nominations for the London Jazz Awards 2012 & 2013 and ‘Ensemble of the Year’ in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2013. The band features members of the critically acclaimed Beats & Pieces Big Band and the Riot Jazz Brass Band. Tonight they come to Matt & Phred’s to get you dancing!

The Bedroom Hour + special guests
London band The Bedroom Hour played their first Manchester show at Night & Day on August 10th, despite having never played here before and with only a few contacts in the city. But the work they put into promoting their gig was amazing, and they justly deserved the huge crowd that turned out to see them headline. Because of this, their newly won fans took to Twitter and Facebook to demand that we get them back…well, you asked, and they listened!

Red Kite (featuring Dan Fisher / Cooper Temple Clause) / The Red Suns / Antelopes
Once so common that Shakespeare described London as “a city of Red Kites and Crows”, the Red Kite (Milvus milvus) was persecuted and hunted to extinction throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Its reintroduction, initiated in 1989 by the RSPB and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, is now the most successful reintroduction of any bird species in Europe. In 2006 The Independent newspaper reported the first sighting of a Red Kite over London for 150 years. Now you’ve had the Bill Odie bit, maybe you’d like to know about the band! Red Kite are a six-piece from London. They play alt-rock music. With three guitarists, two drummers, and equal parts hymn and squall, they will be releasing their debut album ‘Songs For Crow’ on Bonfire Night (Gunpowder, Treason & Plot). Inspired by the poetry of Ted Hughes, and recorded over the course of two years following a personally devastating sequence of events, the album touches on themes of death, loss, love and masculinity. It’s all good though, he gets the girl at the end. Hear them play tonight at The Ruby Lounge with support form The Red Suns and Antelopes.
