Matt & Phreds

Mancheska

Mancheska play ska music. Fronted by a four-strong horn section and four versatile vocalists, the energetic eight-piece perform original material, rare gems and Jamaican classics. Mancheska also “ska up” sing-along tunes that are embedded in the British consciousness, like the Dad’s Army theme. Mashing James Bond into Für Elise, this is the first time you’ll ever skank to Beethoven! Mancheska formed in 2012 to play the music of ska originators The Skatalites. Keep two ears out for the group’s rendition of the Tommy McCook tune Feelin’ Fine, for which they have penned lyrics. Now an ode to good times, sunshine, good friends and good wine: Feelin’ Fine is Mancheska’s anthem! Catch them tonight at Matt & Phreds; it’s sure to be an unforgettable show.

“Mancheska had the Matt & Phreds crowd on their feet from the first note. This young band blew us away with their high octane performance and the synergy between the musicians was a joy to watch. If Mancheska are playing near you, go and see them! They are Matt & Phreds’ recommended band to watch 2014.” ~ Claire Turner (Manager, Matt & Phreds jazz club, Manchester)

Eyes Down with Jon K / Kelvin Brown

Eyes Down originally came into being in 2000 with the desire to play a broad range of music, from ‘all 4 corners of the record shop’ as the phrase was coined, and to make the design and imagery of the night as prominent as the music. Starting life at Dry201, with music largely provided by Jon–K resident DJ at Manchester hip-hop and Drum & Bass night Subtub, and Kelvin Brown resident at the now infamous Electric Chair. The musical styling was balanced by a strong visual element, provided by the two others that made up Eyes Down; Designer Jack Croal and Photographer Gawain Forster. The final piece of the jigsaw was the resident MC, DRS. Over a number of venues including the pre-refurbishment Band on the Wall, and Mancunian stalwart The Roadhouse, Jon and Kelvin established Eyes Down as a singular voice on the Manchester musical landscape. Now after an extended hiatus which began in 2005 the decision to hold this one-off party is a prime example of people power. A group of the original regulars at the club took to the Internet to demand it. They did so with enough perseverance that their pestering eventually convinced Eyes Down to return once more to the dark basement at Soup Kitchen with a big sound system.

Band On The Wall

Discovery 100% live

Fresh from recreating DJ Shadow’s ‘Endtroducing‘ and Mr Scruff’s ‘Keep it Unreal‘, a slimmed-down six-piece Introducinglive now sets its sights on Daft Punk’s 2001 seminal album, ‘Discovery‘ – a truly daft undertaking! ‘Discovery‘ is one of the greatest, fastest, craziest electronic albums ever. A mix of uptempo beats, hyperactive synth lines, robotic vocals, and complex samples, its recreation on stage is a feat of determination, hard graft, and musical heroism. Expect robotics and lasers, expect a stunt guitarist, samples triggered by increasingly blurry hands, and sixty-one minutes of unbelievable drumming. Just don’t expect to be able to stop dancing. Make sure you put on your dancing shoes for the trip to Band On The Wall tonight.
