Matt & Phreds

Manchester Jazz Festival – New York Brass Band

The NYBB boys are back at Matt & Phred’s to kick off the Manchester Jazz Festival in style! The band are North Yorkshire’s only contemporary New Orleans inspired Brass Band. Hailing from the mean streets of York the band are part of a funky brass revolution that is sweeping the nation. Inspired by Rebirth, Soul Rebels, Youngblood and Brassroots, New York Brass Band pack a powerful punch of relentless drums, rumbling tuba and wailing horns…nothing kicks a party into gear like the sound of a smokin’ New Orleans Mardi Gras Jazz Band. The band take its inspiration from contemporary New Orleans musicians but have a repertoire that ranges from Marvin Gaye to George Michael, from Cee-Lo Green to Stevie Wonder with some funky, gritty northern originals thrown in for good measure. If you are looking for a night to remember, this is the gig for you!

The Ruby Lounge

Phre The Eon

Experienced Indie rock funksters Phre the Eon fronted by Manchester born songwriter/guitarist Gary Phethean (the band name evolved from his surname), have been writing and performing together for almost a decade. With Bassist Burg from Warrington, Drummer Colin Ramage from Stirling (Scotland) and Guitarist Dave Conyard from Dundalk (Ireland) the bands reach of influence comes together to bring to life powerful and thought-provoking melodic rock. Although fans would suggest they don’t play live enough the band prefer to ensure these performances are not treated as just another gig, their aim to ensure their audience are part of a memorable event peppered with the latest Phre the Eon sounds. They continue to perform live and provide a multitude of free downloads via Soundcloud, including their most recent release the ‘Electronic Reign EP‘. For tonight’s show at The Ruby Lounge they were due to be supported by Kanteen but they have dropped out because they lost their bass player so I don’t know who it is now!
