Matt & Phreds

Charlie Cooper & the CCs

Charlie Cooper is returning to Matt & Phred’s this Friday with her eight piece band to perform tracks from her debut album ‘Needs Must‘. The Manchester based soul singer writes songs combining elements of soul and jazz, singing with a deep and husky soulful voice. The songwriting is approached with the same rootsy realism and honesty as Bill Withers accompanied with grooves akin to Bill, Stevie Wonder and old school Stax and Motown alongside luscious musical arrangements. Covering the usual topics of love and relationships but also the not so typical topics of religion and addiction, Charlie invites you in for a glimpse into her mind and her world, whilst her band kick it like Booker T and the MGs. Expect to hear a show stopping performance of songs from her debut album mixed with few unique soul covers for good measure.

Night & Day

Treetop Flyers + special guests

With their quintessential vintage West Coast sound, it’s fitting that Treetop Flyers laid down their outstanding country soul debut in the canyons of Southern California. Though based in London, the British five-piece – Reid Morrison (vocals/guitars), Sam Beer (guitar/vocals), Laurie Sherman (guitar), Mathew Starritt (bass/vocals) and the band’s lone American Tomer Danan (drums/vocals) – swapped urban England for the picturesque beaches and rolling hills of Malibu in order to record the classic-sounding ‘The Mountain Moves‘. Tonight they bring their laid-back West Coast sound to the North West of England and to the stage at Night & Day, along with some special guests.

Soup Kitchen

Jam City (all night)

As the stand out member of a stellar Night Slugs roster the Soup gang are very happy to allow Jack Latham AKA Jam City the chance to take control of the Soup Kitchen basement for a rare all night set. Forging and refining his own club sound since 2010′s ‘Magic Drops‘, Jam City’s output hasn’t once relented in quality. The full length ‘Classical Curves‘ was lauded as one of the releases of 2012, marrying toughened drum patterns with neon synths in an irresistible manner. More music promises further developments.

The Castle Hotel

Rue Royale / Cousin Jac / Trip of Hares

For their upcoming third album the soulful Anglo-American duo Rue Royale threw the doors wide open to help create their boldest, most romantic work to date. After notching up over 100,000 tour miles in just six years, Ruth and Brookln Dekker recorded ‘Remedies Ahead‘ in March 2013. The pair wanted fans involved from the outset and launched a campaign on pledge-site Kickstarter to finance the record. People put in everything from £4 to a mind-blowing £1,000 as Rue Royale exceeded their goal. Followers of the band, who started in 2006 in their then hometown of Chicago, will recognize the Fleetwood Mac and Gospel influenced harmonies. However, they may not be expecting the rib-rattling synth bass lines and loops which lurk beneath heart-breaking melodies. Tonight they will be chasing the remedies ahead at The Castle Hotel with support from Cousin Jac and Trip of Hares.
