Instructor Pilot Cheri Warner of North-Aire Flight Training in Prescott AZ shares the importance of an elevator for flight with students from the Mountain Institute Joint Technical Education District (MIJTED).

Yavapai College and North-Aire Aviation show aspiring  aviators what’s involved when taking to the skies.

Stepping into the shoes of a person in a student’s desired career path is perhaps the most important part of the high school experience at the Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) at Yavapai College.

For area high school students in the Mountain Institute Joint Technical Education District serving the Quad Cities area around Prescott AZ, those career shoes often belong to Pilots Cheri Warner and Robert Kuerner, or their aviator colleagues at North-Aire Flight Training.  In this program, high school tech students learn about careers as pilot thanks to the time spent with the pilots.

The company has been offering flight training to aspiring aviators in Prescott since 1973.  Today, its educational programs range from degree-targeted to purely recreational flying.  A college-track partnership with Yavapai College enables North-Aire Flight Training to provide ground school and in-air flight instruction to students going for an Associate of Applied Science degree (with a focus on airplanes).

That two-year program can be expanded into a Bachelor Degree for about $23K more, plus as few as six months of additional classes either online or on a campus.  The better planned the Associate Degree study, the more easily the required credits can be earned and transferred to the add-on Bachelor option.  Yavapai College partners with Grand Canyon University, Northern Arizona University, and Arizona State University for its Bachelor degree offerings.

Career counselors at Yavapai College always are available to assist students of any age interested in pursuing a degree in aviation.  Tapping their knowledge can save considerable time and energy for a student in finishing a degree program.

North-Aire Flight Training also is available to speak anytime with prospective students about its operations and the career income benefits of an Associate Degree in Airplane Operations.  Part of that guidance includes the CTEC tours held in October 2015 for high school students interested in aviation as a potential career path.

The two North-Aire aviators —Warner and Kuerner — each guided a group of high school students through the all-important pre-flight check procedure in a November 2015 onsite visit.  That pre-flight check is where the plane is evaluated by the pilot to make sure that all equipment is working correctly and that the aircraft is properly fueled and ready for takeoff.

Mingling with instructor pilots and other personnel at the flight training center enables high school students to determine early on whether being a pilot is a field they wish to pursue for career income.
