The Students Before Profits Award was created to promote nonprofit colleges and university offering degrees that put students before profits and education before the bottom line.  For our ranking of the 2017 Online Master’s of Public Health award winners, we chose online programs from nonprofit colleges and universities, accredited by CEPH (Council on Education for Public Health), with lower than average tuition cost and have ranked them by affordability.

Most people seeking a Master of Public Health degree are already working in the field in some capacity, so finding time to attend a face-to-face program might not be feasible.  Online Master of Public Health degree programs allow students to continue education on their own terms and grow their career options without having to take time away from their current occupation.

A Master of Public Health degree is a very useful and versatile degree that has many, many applications.  Students who study Public Health are learning to put policies into practice.  This degree focuses on the understanding of current public health dilemmas and current public health policy while also teaching the necessary skills in order to assess, re-imagine, and deploy new public health policy.  This degree can be applied to careers like health and safety engineer, epidemiologist, hospital administrator, or working for any number of government agencies like the EPA or the Health Department.  The field of public health is ever-expanding and has fantastic job security as the problems that public health professionals face are constantly changing and evolving.  Public health professionals will always have problems to solve as long as there is a public to keep healthy.

#1. University of Missouri – Columbia

Affectionately known as Mizzou, (the exact origin of the name clipping is unknown, but at least dates back all the way to 1905), University of Missouri – Columbia is home to 35,000 currently enrolled students.   Founded in 1839 as part of Missouri Legislature’s passing of the Geyer Act, the school became the first public university west of the Mississippi River.  A lot has changed since then.  The University of Missouri – Columbia has grown to become the largest school in the state, and offers over 300 degree programs, eighty-nine of which are available completely online.  Located in the city of Columbia, a bustling college town build around the main campus, the University of Missouri is located in the heart of Missouri. The campus itself is beautifully landscaped, so much so that it is a designated botanic garden.  University of Missouri – Columbia is a public institution.

Program Overview

At the University of Missouri – Columbia, the Master of Public Health degree program is designed to help students to advance the health and well-being of communities, not only within the state but across the globe.  Understanding that the medical profession can be very busy and demanding, the Online Master of Public Health degree was designed to allow students a flexible means to advance their education. The program offers an array of asynchronous classes as well as synchronous sessions with multiple schedule times, ensuring the greatest amount of flexibility for students.  The online Master of Public Health degree is offered in one concentration online, Health Promotion & Policy.  The Health Promotion & Policy concentration will teach students to engage populations to understand implement public health to ensure community health. A minimum of 45 credits are required to complete this program.

Founded in 1956 on Henderson Air Field, an old World War II airstrip, the University of South Florida has grown to become the fourth-largest public university in Florida.  Located in the top tier of research universities by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and one of the top holders of US patents, the University of Florida is a research powerhouse.  University of South Florida is located in the city of Tampa, a coastal city overlooking the Tampa Bay that feeds into the Gulf of Mexico. Spread across the Tampa Bay Area, the University of South Florida has three different campuses in the area: USF, USF St. Petersburg, and USF Sarasota-Manatee.  Over 48,000 students are enrolled across the three campuses.  These students are offered 200+ potential degree programs to pursue.  University of South Florida is a public institution.

Program Overview

Through the Office of Educational Technology and Assessment at the University of South Florida, the USF College of Public Health offers students a wide variety of Master of Public Health programs that can be taken entirely online.  Designed to take advantage of new online technologies, classes will incorporate forums, web conferences, wikis, and podcasts as an integral part of their curriculum.  The University of South Florida offers their program in seven different concentrations: Public Health Practice; Public Health Administration; Global Disaster Management, Humanitarian Relief & Homeland Security; Epidemiology; Infection Control; Health, Safety & Environment; and Social Marketing.  By providing students with a large array of concentrations, students are able to choose a degree plan that is best suited to their needs as they plan for their career. A minimum of 42 credits are required to complete this program.

#3. University of South Carolina

At the center of the University of South Carolina System,  the University of South Carolina is the flagship school.  The University of South Carolina was founded in 1801 as South Carolina College with an initial class of just nine total students.  Now home to almost 34,000 students, the University of South Carolina is one of the largest colleges in the state.  The University of South Carolina is located at the top of the Congaree River in the state’s capital, Columbia.  In the midst of the downtown metropolitan area, the University of South Carolina sprawls across seven different satellite campuses. It is due to the school’s large footprint that it is able to provide over 350 degree programs.  The University of South Carolina has earned many recognition for it’s dedication to research, including recognition from the Carnegie Foundation.  The University of South Carolina is a public institution.

Program Overview

The University of South Carolina offers their Master of Public Health degree in an entirely online program through their Professional Online Program.  Designed to be completed in less than two years, the degree is designed for current workers in the field of public health who need the flexibility of an online program.  Once completed with the program, students will be able to be leaders within their health organizations, develop programs to promote good health, evaluate current health programs, and develop information campaigns designed to promote public health. By attending this online course, students will be given access to the same nationally recognized faculty found on campus, as well as earn a degree from a university that is highly-recognized and respected in the medical community.   A minimum of 45 credits are required to complete this program.

#4. Nova Southern University

Built on a former Naval Outlying Landing Field in the coastal city of Davie, Nova Southern University was established in the year 1964.  Then called Nova University, it wasn’t until its merger with the nearby Southeastern University of the Health Sciences that it became Nova Southern University.  Today, Nova Southern University spans across three different campuses across the Florida panhandle, its main campus located in Ft. Lauderdale.  They also maintain several smaller Student Education Centers, one of which located in Puerto Rico. Currently Nova Souther University offers sixty-five undergraduate programs and sixty graduate programs.  Across these 125 programs, approximately 25,000 students are actively enrolled.  Through it’s sixteen different colleges, Nova Southern University hopes to offer students with a large selection of field of study.  Nova Southern University is a private institution.

Program Overview

To help meet the demand of public health professionals, Nova Southern University has adapted its current Master of Public Health degree to provide the flexibility needed for current working professionals who seek to meet the needs of a growing industry.  Designed to teach students the necessary skills to be leaders in health care facilities, health care agencies, and any place in need of intelligent public health policy, the program imparts students with the necessary skills needed to plan, develop, implant, evaluate, and administer health-related programs.  The program itself can be completed entirely online but does require a weekend orientation, exit seminar, and a weekend seminar once the program has ended.  The program can be taken full-time or part-time.  A minimum of 46 credits are required for this program.

#5. University of Nebraska Medical Center

Located in Omaha, Nebraska, University of Nebraska Medical Center is part of the University of Nebraska System of public institutions of higher learning.  Having opened its doors initially in 1880 as a private medical college, it wasn’t until 1902 that it was incorporated into the state public learning system. The University of Nebraska Medical Center is currently the only public academic health sciences center in the state of Nebraska.  Over 3,700 students are currently enrolled at the University of Nebraska Medical Center enrolled in one of the more than two dozen programs of study available. Being located in Nebraska’s largest city, student have access to and are able to enjoy the downtown metropolitan area.  The University of Nebraska Medical Center is a public institution.

Program Overview

Wanting to deliver their already highly-reputable Public Health program outside the confines of their Omaha campus, the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center has redesigned their Master of Public Health program to also be available entirely online.  Built around the University of Nebraska’s Online Worldwide program, students will be able to pursue three different specializations: Biostatistics, Environment & Occupational Health, and Public Health Practice.  Building on a basic foundation of core competencies of public health, students will then branch off to take classes designed to help them understand their specific area of specialization, providing students with a much more closely-tailored education.  A minimum of 45 credits are required to complete this program.

#6. University of Massachusetts Amherst

The largest public university in New England, the University of Massachusetts Amherst offers students nearly 235 programs of study for which to choose from. Founded under the 1863 Federal Morill Land-Grant, University of Massachusetts Amherst was initially named Massachusetts Agricultural College or more commonly “Mass Aggie”.  Initially opened in the town of Amherst, as the University grew parts of the campus expanded outwards into the neighboring town of Hadley. As the university continued to grow, it retained many of its initial buildings in order to ensure their historic value.  Currently university has approximately 29,000 students enrolled, making it the flagship school of the University of Massachusetts system.  The Carnegie Foundation has recently rated the university’s research activity to be “very high”.   The University of Massachusetts Amherst is a public institution.

Program Overview

Through its School of Public Health and Health Sciences, the University of Massachusetts offers an entirely online Master of Public Health degree program for students who require a more flexible education experience, whether it be due to distance from the Amherst campus or due to demands of their current work in the medical health profession. The program offers students two entirely online curriculums as well as a blended curriculum.   The Public Health Practice concentration and the Nutrition concentration are fully online experiences, while the Worcester program is offered to medical students and require on-campus visits.   Public Health Practice track is the oldest online MPH program and will prepare students to be able to understand current health care issues, and the skills needed to develop and deploy programs for health promotion.   These programs are designed to be completed in two years if taken full-time.  A minimum of 42 credits are required to complete this program.

#7. Des Moines University

The largest medical school and one of the twenty largest medical schools in the country, Des Moines University enrolls over 1,700 students. Des Moines University is the second oldest osteopathic medical school in the nation.   Founded in 1898 as the Dr. S. S. Still College and Infirmary of Osteopathy & Surgery, it wasn’t until several name changes and over a hundred years would pass until the school would be renamed to Des Moines University in 1999.  Des Moines, Illinois is the capital of Iowa, and is a larger midwestern city with large ties to the insurance industry.  Offering just nine academic programs to its student body, Des Moines University is a very focused learning environment that specializes specifically in teaching medical sciences.  Des Moines University is a private institution

Program Overview

Offered through the College of Health Sciences at Des Moines University, the Master of Public Health degree is offered through an entirely online format.  Students in the program will learn the knowledge and skills needs to make it as a public health professional by learning promote wellness among individuals and larger populations, as well as assessing, understanding and combatting future health risks.  The program is designed to allow current working professionals to participate without it interrupting their current work schedules.  Des Moines University offers this degree in three concentrations: General Public Health, Health Service Management, Health Promotion.  The degree program is designed to be completed in two and a half years or more.  Minimum of 46 credits are required to complete this program

#8. University of Florida

Established in 1853 as the East Florida Seminary in Ocala, Florida,  it wasn’t until 1905 that three other colleges in the state of Florida consolidated into one to form the University of the State of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.  To this day, the University of Florida has operated out of the Gainesville, Florida campus, although it has grown a great deal since 1905.  Gainesville is a mid-central Florida city that is home to both the University of Florida and Santa Fe College, making it quite the college city.  Currently, the University of Florida is home to nearly 53,000 students making it the eight largest single-campus university in the United States.  Through it’s massive campus and the internet, the University of Florida offers nearly 330 plans of study for its students.  The University of Florida is a public institution.

Program Overview

To meet the needs of students who are either too far away from the Gainesville campus or are too busy currently working out in the field and cannot attend class, the University of Florida has adapted its Master of Public Health degree option into an entirely online format. Although students are not required to visit campus, the program does include opportunities to come to campus for supplemental learning experiences.  The degree plan is offered in one specialization: the Public Health Practice concentration.  There are two different program lengths, depending on whether the student is able to attend full-time or part-time.  Students who take this program will cover the topics necessary to making a well-rounded public health professional, preparing them for a life of leadership within their field.  A minimum of 48 credits are required to complete this program.

#9. San Jose State University

Holding the distinction of being the oldest pubic institution of higher education on the West Coast of the United States, San Jose State University was founded in 1857.  Opened by George W. Minns as the Minns Evening Normal School in San Francisco, it wasn’t until 1974 when the California legislature voted for a name change that it was renamed to San Jose University.  The founding member of the California State University system,  San Jose University is located in downtown San Jose –  a bustling west coast city.  San Jose University spans across much of the downtown San Jose area in order to house its student body of 33,000 students. Across its 154 acre campus, San Jose University offers 145 different areas of study.  San Jose State University is a public institution.

Program Overview

As the global need for public health education increases, San Jose University decided to adapt its Master of Public Health degree plan into an online format to help meet those needs and increase the global understanding of public health.  Offered both on campus and online, San Jose University offers the same specialization through both formats: Community Health Education.  The Master of Public Health: Community Health Education Online Format is a twenty-four month, cohort program.  Students will enter the program in a group, progress as a group, and ultimately complete the program together as well.  This cohort design is used to encourage completion rates and foster relationships amongst the students.  Students will meet once a year in San Jose for 4-5 days, other than that they are free to take the class entirely online.  A minimum of 42 credits are required to complete this program.

#10. California State University, Northridge

Proposed as an addition to Los Angeles State College, California State University, Northridge was opened in 1952.  One more name change later, the California State University, Northridge adopted it’s current name in the year 1972.  Now the school enrolls nearly 42,000 students, making it the largest school in the California State University System.  California State University, Northridge is located in the Northridge suburb of Los Angeles.  Occupying a small part of the San Fernando Valley, students in attendance have access to the experiences and opportunities that Los Angeles has to offer.  On campus and off, students can enroll in one or more of the school’s nearly 230 different plans of study.  California State University, Northridge is a public institution.

Offered within Tseng College for Midcareer Education, students can enroll in a Master of Public Health: Community Health Education degree offered by California State University, Northridge.  The course is designed to be completed in two years and follows the University’s cohort format.  The cohort format requires that all students in the course progress at the same rate and graduate at the same time which helps to increase completion rates as well as create relationships with students within the program.  The program was derive from the same on-campus curriculum and is also taught by the same on-campus faculty.  Students who complete the course will have covered the five core areas of public health and will be prepared to pursue careers in the public health profession A minimum of 42 credits are required to complete this program.

#11. Kent State University

Conceived as a teacher-training school in 1910 under the name Ohio State Normal College at Kent, Kent State University has been a hub for education in Ohio ever since.  Now renamed to the simpler Kent State University, the school operates across a total of eight campuses spread throughout the city of Kent.  The university was named after William S. Kent, the son of Marvin Kent for whom the city of Kent is named.  Known as “The Tree City”, Kent, Ohio lies north of Akron, Ohio along the Cuyahoga River.  Kent State University is now host to a student body of over 41,000 students and offers 300 different degree programs.  It also maintains campuses in New York City, Shanghai, and Florence.  Kent State University is a public institution

Located within the Kent State Online program, the university offers its Health and Policy Management concentration of their Master of Public Health program entirely online.  With two programs designed to take students either 24 or 27 months, the program aims to get students out into the field of Public Health in just over two years.   This particular degree program focuses on training students to address public health risk and develop effective health services delivery models for populations.  A minimum of 46 credits are required to complete this program.

The oldest university in the state of Idaho and the originator of the Master of Fine Arts degree, University of Iowa open its doors to students in 1847.   University of Iowa is located in Iowa City, a small mid-western city with lots of night life, and the only city in the United States to be added to UNESCO’s City of Literature program.  Now spanning a 1,700-acre campus along the banks of the Iowa River, students are given a beautiful and peaceful backdrop to which they pursue their education.  The University of Iowa is home to over 32,000 students and offers over 200 plans of study across its eleven colleges.    The University of Iowa is a public institution.

In collaboration with the College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State University has designed a distance-based Master of Public Health program to help fit a very specific, but underserved group of medical professionals looking to continue their education.   The Master of Public Health for Practicing Veterinarians degree plan is designed to allow practicing veterinarians to attend Iowa State University’s Master of Public Health program without too many interruptions to their current working schedules.  Students will be required to attend two 2-week summer institutes each summer during the program, but otherwise will take the entirety of the class online.  The program is designed to be completed in two years. A minimum of 42 credits are required to complete this program.

#13. University of New England

Spread across two campuses in Maine, the University of New England teaches its student body of over 10,000 across its Biddeford and Portland campuses.  The Biddeford campus is located along the ocean where the Saco River empties into the Atlantic Ocean in a quaint seaside village, and the Portland campus is located in the the historic district of this New England suburban town.   The two campuses are just a few minutes by car ride from one another.  Initially opened in 1939 as an all-boys college named College Séraphique, University of New England is now co-educational since 1967.  Now, University of New England offers students over seventy different degree programs across its six colleges.  The University of New England is a private institution.

To prepare current working professionals for their future in the field of public health, University of New England has developed their online Master of Pubic Health degree program to offer the highest degree of flexibility.  The program requires absolutely no visits to their campuses in Maine, and can be completed in eighteen months when attempted full-time.  The classes are delivered asynchronously ensuring that students a way to work the classes around their current schedules. Through this program students will be prepared to be leaders in their field by gaining the information necessary to promote health in communities, large and small.  This program requires a minimum of 46 units.

#14. East Tennessee State University

At the corner of the state where Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia meet, East Tennessee University is located in Johnson City – a beautiful southern college town with a rich night life for students.   Founded as the East Tennessee State Normal School in 1911 to train the next generation of teachers, East Tennessee State University expanded it’s liberal arts offerings eventually becoming East Tennessee State University in 1963.  Now, the college has grown to occupy four different campuses  offering 140 degree programs to a student body of 14,000+.  Located only thirty minutes from the Appalachian Trail, East Tennessee State University has a very strong community around activities in the great outdoors.  East Tennessee State University is a public institution.

At East Tennessee State University, the faculty knows that school growth does not need to be limited to the physical space that the campus can occupy.   That is why since the year 2001, East Tennessee State University has invested greatly in it’s ETSU Online program to offer students entirely online degree programs.  Now, the school offers 45 fully online degrees, including their Master of Public Health degree program. The Master of Public Health program is offered in three concentrations: Community Health, Epidemiology, and Health Services Administration.  Through these three tracks, students can focus their education in a way that will benefit the career path that they are currently working down, or plan to enter. A minimum of 43 credits are required to complete this program.

#15. A.T. Still University

The first osteopathic medical school in the entire world, A.T. Still University started making it’s mark on medical education in the year 1892 when it was opened.  A.T. Still University was founded in Kirksville, Missouri, a small college town located in northern Missouri. Kirksville is home to one other college campus, Truman State University A second campus in Mesa, Arizona was opened in the 1990s.  Now, A.T. Still University has three different colleges within the school at each campus for a total of six.  Focusing closely on dental, health sciences, and osteopathy, A.T. Still University excels in the specialized education of future medical professionals.  A.T. Still University offers 35 total degree programs to its student body of nearly 3,200.  A.T. Still University is a private institution.

Following their vision of osteopathic medicine, the treatment of the body as a whole and not a collection of symptoms,  A.T. Still University applies this value to the the curriculum of their online Master of Public Health degree.   With the goal of creating elite healthcare professionals meant to lead the future of healthcare, the program follows closely new public health standards ensuring students with the most up-to-date information.  Online classes allow up to only sixteen students to make sure that students can foster relationships with one another as well as a relationship with the instructor.  A minimum of 64 credits are required to complete this program.

#16. Florida A&M University

Ranked the #1 HBCU in the nation for total research and development expenditures by the National Science Foundation, Florida A&M University is a leader in higher education in the United States.  Opened in 1887 in opposition of racially segregated schools, Florida A&M University, then called the State Normal College for Colored Students, gave African-American students a place of higher education when laws required that they were not allowed into “white” colleges.  In 1905, control of the school was taken over by Florida’s Board of Control officially designating the school as an institution for higher education in the state.  Now, Florida A&M University is one of the largest HBCUs in the United States.  A member of the University System of Florida, Florida A&M University offers nearly 100 programs to it’s student body of 10,500.   Florida A&M University is located on the highest hill in Tallahassee, Florida.  Florida A&M University is a public institution.

Florida A&M University offers its Master of Public Health degree program through it’s FAMUOnline service.  The FAMUOnline program is cutting-edge web portal service that allows students to access the entirety of an online degree program offered at Florida A&M University. The Master of Public Health degree offered by FAMUOnline is the first to be offered by an HBCU and the first to be offered in North Florida.  The program leverages it’s connections to the CDC, EPA, and other state and federal public health organizations to tailor their student’s learning experience to what is required on the job, as well as help place them into relevant positions.  A minimum of 50 credits are required to complete this program.

#17. Idaho State University

Named and renamed five different times in its 115 year history, Idaho State University has existed in many forms; as a technical institute, an auxiliary campus for the University of Idaho, and a state college.  Now, Idaho State University offers it’s student body of 13,000 over 250 different programs of study. A leader in the state for the education of health professionals, Idaho State University also offers a wide array of other learning experiences.  Idaho State University is located in Pocatello, Idaho, the fifth largest town in the city with a population clocking in just shy of 55,000 people.  Pocatello, Idaho is a town of rolling green hills, blue skies, and fresh air.  Due to it’s great climate, students are afforded ample opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.  Idaho State University is a public institution.

Due to Idaho’s geographic nature, Idaho State University created it’s online Master of Public of Health degree program to not only be suitable for working professionals, but also for students who live in rural, and remote locations.  Offering the only CEPH-accredited program in Idaho, Idaho State University is at the forefront of Public Health education in the state. Classes are taught by faculty from both the Pocatello and Meridian campuses.   The degree program focuses on community health by teaching students how to conduct epidemiological studies, public health research, while learning to overcome cultural disparities in the application of community health.  A minimum of 48 credits are required to complete this program.

#18. University of Illinois at Chicago

In 1982, the University of Illinois at Chicago was formed when two separate University of Illinois campuses, the Chicago Circle campus and the Medical Center campus, combined to form one college. Now the largest university in the Chicago area, the University of Illinois at Chicago offers it’s student body of 29,000+ students nearly 300 different programs including Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral, and certificates.  Despite having such a large student body, the University of Illinois at Chicago maintains a student-to-teacher ratio of 1:17.  Having reached Carnegie “Research I” status, the University of Illinois at Chicago is in the upper echelon research universities.  This dedication to research has led the University of Illinois at Chicago to becoming the largest medical school in the entire United States. The University of Illinois at Chicago is a public institution.

To meet the demands of current workers in the field of public health,  the School of Public Health at University of Illinois at Chicago has designed their online Master of Public Health program to be entirely online, and asynchronous. This way students are able to learn whenever, wherever they are.  This program of study requires approximately eight to ten hours of student participation per week, and students are not required to ever visit campus.  Their Master of Public Health concentrations offered to students through the online program are Community Health Sciences and Health Policy & Administration. A minimum of 42 credits are required to complete this program.

Born out of a unique partnership between Oregon Health & Science University and Portland State University, the Oregon MPH program is a dedicated MPH-granting entity designed to pool the resources of both Portland institutions to provide one of the best Master of Public Health programs in the state.  By allowing students access to either campus, whether it be the downtown campus of Portland State University or the health science center at Oregon Health & Science University, students are afforded a wider range of courses and opportunities to learn and grow in the field of public health. Oregon MPH Program is a public institution.

Program Overview

Offered through the Oregon Health & Science University campus, the Oregon MPH Program offers it’s Primary Health Care & Health Disparities track in an entirely online format. The Primary Health Care & Health Disparities teaches students primary health care philosophy in order to equip them to better fight health disparities in public health populations.  Students who complete this program will be ready to step into leadership roles within health care organizations such as health departments, health agencies, and community health centers.   A minimum of 58 credits are required to finish this program.

Northern Illinois University offers their Master of Public program in two different specializations: Health Promotion or Health Services Management. Students studying the Health Promotion track will learn to create programs that assist people in choosing healthier lifestyles.  Students who follow the Health Services Management track will learn to evaluate the different facets of a health care services and teach them ways to improve them.  Both programs are offered fully online, and are designed for current working professionals who want to pursue further education.  Full-time students can expect to finish the program in at least two years.  A minimum of 43 credits are required to complete this program.

#23. University of Alaska Anchorage

The history of the University of Alaska Anchorage dates back to 1954, before Alaska was even a state.  Opened as Anchorage Community College, the school was located at Elmendorf Air Force base, serving a little over 400 students.  Finally becoming what we now know as University of Alaska Anchorage in 1987, the school now serves 20,000 students and is the largest school in the University of Alaska system.  Located near the downtown area of Anchorage, the school is located next to Goose Lake Park.  University of Alaska Anchorage is a public institution.

With working professionals in mind, the University of Alaska Anchorage Master of Public Health online degree program allows students to pursue their studies around their current work demands.  This degree is almost entirely online, requiring one mandatory meeting in Anchorage each year.  This interdisciplinary degree has students prepare to identify the health needs of population, as well as afford them the tools and skills to properly implement and administer public health policy. Designed for working health practitioners who are unable to attend campus, the On-Line Master of Public Health degree at New Mexico State University can be completed in two years when done full-time.  The online curriculum is a version of the same Master of Public Health program being offered on New Mexico State University’s campus.  The goals of the program are to prepare competent health professionals with the necessary knowledge needed to promote public health education through diverse populations, as well as essential knowledge needed for advanced health management, administration, and policy development.  A minimum of 48 credits are required to complete this program.
