The Students Before Profits Awards were created to recognize nonprofit colleges and universities offering degrees that put students before profits and education before the bottom-line.  For our ranking of the 2017 Online Bachelor’s in Organizational Leadership winners, we chose online Organizational Leadership degree programs from nonprofit universities and colleges, accredited by independent and trusted accreditation boards, with lower than average tuition costs, and have ranked them by affordability.

Todays students have busier schedules than ever.  Between more demanding coursework, taking part in internships, and having jobs to help pay for college costs, students are always looking for ways that they can tailor there college experience to allow them more flexibility at a lower cost.  That is why many students have turned online colleges for their degrees.  By taking courses online, students are able to control the costs of their education while creating schedules that work best with their current scheduling needs.  Rather than being beholden to a schedule created by a teacher on a physical campus, students turn to online courses in order to find flexibility that allows them to pursue other things while studying.  Online degrees also tend to cost less as a lot of the overhead is cut out.

Looking to expand the Kansas State Normal School, the Western Branch of Kansas State Normal School was established in 1902.  Located on a former frontier military outpost, the Western Branch of Kansas State Normal School was located within the abandoned Fort Hays installation.  It wasn’t long before the school had outgrown the walls of Fort Hays and it was decided that a new campus would be built closer to the nearby city of Hays.  However, the Fort Hays campus is still part of the school, the majority of Fort Hays State University is now located in Hays, Kansas.  Now, Forty Hays State University has become the third-largest public university in the entire state after years of considerable growth.  With a student body of 11,200, students are able to enroll in sixty different programs of study at Fort Hays State University.  Fort Hays State University is a public institution.

#2. Oklahoma Wesleyan University

Founded by the Wesleyan Church, Oklahoma Wesleyan University was established to provide students with a higher education that incorporated teachings of the Wesleyan Church.  The modern day Oklahoma Wesleyan University is the produce of a series of mergers that included many area schools dating all the way back to 1910.  The main portion of this history dates back to the merger of Central Pilgrim College and Miltonvale Wesleyan College.  The two different schools merged together in the year 1972 to form Bartlesville Wesleyan college.  After operating under that name for nearly three decades, the school underwent one final name change to Oklahoma Wesleyan University.  Located in Bartlesville, Oklahoma,  Oklahoma Wesleyan University is home to just over 1,200 students.  Oklahoma Wesleyan University is a private institution.

#3. St. Thomas University

American Augustinians, with help from European Augustinians, helped to establish the Universidad Católica de Santo Tomás de Villanueva in Havana, Cuba in 1946.  The school operated within Cuba until the group was expelled by Fidel Castro.  Being forced to return to America, the Augustinians decided to found Biscayne College in Miami in the year 1961.  This school would eventually become St. Thomas University.  Earning university-status in 1984, the school’s name was changed from Biscayne College to St. Thomas University to reflect the breadth of educational opportunities offered at the school.  Located in the beautiful Miami Gardens of Florida, St. Thomas University is home to over 4,000 students.  St. Thomas University is a private institution.

#4. Southern New Hampshire University

Dating back to the 1930s, Southern New Hampshire University has been an integral part of New Hampshire’s higher education offerings.  Wife and husband, Gertrude Crockett Shapiro and Harry A. B. Shapiro founded the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Science in downtown Manchester in 1932 to provide adults with an opportunity to gain a higher education.  The school was later renamed from the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Sciences to the New Hampshire College of Accounting and Commerce to reflect the expansion of the school’s curriculum.  Eventually the school had begun to brush against the confines of its current campus and it was decided that the school would move to the border of Manchester and Hooksett.  Now, the school enrolls over 3,000 students at its main campus and 60,000 students online.  Southern New Hampshire University is a private institution.

The University of Alabama is the oldest public university in the state of Alabama, accepting its first students in 1820.  Established in what was once the state’s capital, the University of Alabama is located in the city of Tuscaloosa. After Alabama was admitted into the United States, the school was established by the General Assembly of Alabama.  Modeled after Thomas Jefferson’s design for the University of Virginia, the University of Alabama’s campus was built around the library at its center.  Now, the University of Alabama has grown greatly in size.  It now sits at the center of the state’s University of Alabama system of higher education.  Home to 37,000 students at its Tuscaloosa campus, the University of Alabama has gained a reputation as once of the states greatest research universities.  The University of Alabama is a public institution.

#6. Colorado State University

The Governor of what was at the time the Colorado Territory, Edward M. McCook, established Colorado State University with the stroke of his pen in 1870.  Originally, existing only on paper, the school slowly began to form.  Roger Dazell spurred the slow-moving progress on the school by purchasing a parcel of land for which the school would be located on.  Soon, construction began on the thirty-two acre piece of land located in Fort Collins.  Established as the Colorado Agricultural College, the school then joined the Colorado State University system in 1876 as statehood was granted to Colorado.  After nine years, the school began accepting its first class of students in 1879.  Operating under different names, the school eventually was named the Colorado State University in 1957 after receiving university-status.  Now, the school is home to 34,000 students.  Colorado State University is a public institution.

#7. Eastern Illinois University

The Illinois State Legislature established the Eastern Illinois Normal School in 1895 with the explicit goal to train teachers”.  Founded on forty acres in the city of Charleston, Illinois, the school underwent construction and was opened in 1899 to its first class of students.  The oldest building on campus is known as Old Main and has become an iconic representation of the university.  Pictured above, Old Main is a massive castle like structure formally known as Livingston C. Lord Administration Building. Over the years, the school underwent several name changes.  Known as the Eastern Illinois State Teachers College and Eastern Illinois State College, the name was finally changed to Eastern Illinois University in 1957.  Now, Eastern Illinois University is home to almost 9,000 students.  Eastern Illinois University is a public institution.

#8. Fisher College

Co-founders Edmund H. Fisher and Myron C. Fisher teamed up to create a school that specialized in vocational preparation for students and established that in Fisher College in 1903.  Originally known as the Winter Hill Business College, Edmund and Myron Fisher had begun to provide young adults a path to education in order for a better place within the workplace.  It wasn’t long until the school had become so popular that it outgrew its original location in Somerville, Massachusetts.  Soon, the school had to move to the bigger city of Boston, Massachusetts to its current location on Beacon Street.  At this time the school underwent a short-lived change.  The school was split into two: the Fisher School for Men and the Fisher School for Women.  This change was reversed quickly and the school’s were soon recombined.  Now, Fisher College is home to a student body of 2,500 students.  Fisher College is a private institution.

Fisher College offers its students a Bachelor of Science in Management: Leadership degree. #9. Remington College

Established in Lafayette, Louisiana, Remington College was founded in 1987.  Known originally as the Spencer Business College, the school was conceived to provide adult students with non-traditional options for an education in business.  As the school grew, Spencer College expanded across different campuses and began to establish itself in other states.  Eventually the school was renamed to Remington College.  Now, Remington College has sixteen different campuses located in Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Kansas, and the original campus in Louisiana.  Most recently, Remington College established a new campus in Columbia, South Carolina.  Over the course of its relatively short existence, Remington College has become a frontrunner in online education. Remington College is a private institution.

The Bachelor’s in Organizational Management degree is made available to students at Baker College.  This program will have students cover how to manage people and projects, technical skills and knowledge used to make management-level decisions, and the ethical quandaries that can befall a business.  Students are not required to take any classes at the Remington College campus.  Remington College offers this course entirely online. Founded in 1858, Baker University was named for Osmon Cleander Baker.  Osmon Cleander Baker was a renowned bishop of the United Methodist Church.  Due to its early founding, Baker University is the oldest university in the entire state of Kansas.  Located in the historic city of Baldwin City, students are able to have a glimpse back in time by visiting one of the three buildings located on the campus that are on the National Register of Historic Places.  With locations that have received dedications from Lady Margaret Thatcher and Abraham Lincoln, Baker University is a school steeped in history and American tradition. Located in Baldwin, Kansas since its founding, Baker University is now home to just over 3,000 students.  Baker University is a private institution.

Jerry Falwell, the Senior Pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church, established the Lynchburg Baptist College in 1971.  This school would eventually grow to become Liberty University.  Built to provide an opportunity for higher learning that provided students with a Christian perspective, Lynchburg Baptist College was originally established in the city of Lynchburg, Virginia.  The school was renamed just four years later to Liberty Baptist College in 1976.  A decade later, the school was given university-status by the state and the name was changed once more to Liberty University in 1985.  Now, Liberty University is home to a student body of 15,000 at its Lynchburg campus and a staggering 100,000 students at its online campus.  Liberty University is a private institution.

#12. Calvary University

Created out of the merger of two local schools, Calvary University is located in Kansas City, Missouri.  In 1961, two different struggling Bible colleges merged in Missouri: the Midwest Bible College in St. Louis and the Kansas City Bible College located in Kansas City.  Out of this merger Calvary University was formed.  As the school continued to grow, it also absorbed the nearby Ozark, Arkansas school, Citadel Bible College, in 1987.  The school was known as the Calvary Bible College at this time, but was later renamed to Calvary University.  Still located in Kansas City, Calvary University enrolls just over 400 students in its programs.  The school offers a dozen different programs of study.  Calvary University is a private institution.

Founded as the Christian Broadcast Network University in 1977, Regent University was founded by Pat Robertson in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  The school operated under the Christian Broadcast Network University name until 1990 when it was renamed to the current Regent University name. While tied closely to the church, Regent University is still a very inclusionary campus that makes sure to be accepting of all creeds, cultures, and religions.  Regent University was also a forefather in the field of online education, in 1997 they made their Master of Arts in Business and Leadership degree available entirely online.  Now, the school offers seventy different courses to its student body of over 6,100 students.  Regent University is a private institution.

#14. Mount Vernon Nazarene University

Founded by a local denomination of Evangelical Christianity called the Church of the Nazarene, Mount Vernon Nazarene University was chartered in 1964.  The General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene spent the preceding two years searching Ohio for the perfect site to locate their university until deciding upon building in the city of Mount Vernon due to its large population of Nazarene followers.  Taking over a space that once belonged to Ohio State University, the school opened as the Mount Vernon Nazarene College.  The school operated under this name for nearly half of a century until it received university-status by the state prompting the school to be renamed to Mount Vernon Nazarene University.  The school now hosts a student body of 2,300 students that are able to pick through the school’s over one-hundred different programs of study.  Mount Vernon Nazarene University is a private institution.

#15. Beulah Heights University

Husband and wife, Reverend Paul T. Barth and Dr. Hattie M. Barth founded Beulah Heights University as the Beulah Heights Bible Institute in 1918.  The idea for the school came from Mrs. Barth’s mother who had wanted their to be a Pentecostal Bible School located in the city of Atlanta, Georgia.  Hoping to make good on their mother’s wish, the school began enrolling students.  Operating with a limited capacity until 1928, the school opened its doors more widely in 1928.  Over the coming decades the school began to consolidate into a larger school with neighboring Bible colleges that shared similar visions.  Finally, in October 2006, the school was granted university-status by the state of Georgia and was renamed to Beulah Heights University.  Named for its location in the Beulah Heights section of Atlanta Georgia, Beulah Heights University is home to hundreds of students who are able to focus on a small, focused selection of degrees.  Beulah Heights University is a private institution.

#16. Southeastern University

Superintendent J. C. Thames and the Assemblies of God Alabama District founded Southeastern University in 1935.   Opening its doors to students in the winter of 1935, classes were originally held in a former high school building in the city of New Brockton, Alabama.  The school operated independently until 1940, at which point classes were consolidated with the nearby Beulah Heights Institute in Georgia.  The school was later given its original name two years later of Southeastern Bible Institute while in Atlanta.  The school then moved again in 1946 down to Lakeland, Florida.  The school has remained in Lakeland, Florida ever since and was renamed Southeastern University in 2005 after gaining university-status.  The school is home to a student body of nearly 3,400 students.  Southeastern University is a private institution.

#17. Midway University

Midway University opened almost 150 years ago as the only all-female day college in all of Kentucky.  Named the Kentucky Female Orphan School, students began being accepted into the school in 1849.  The first class of sixteen female students were taught by one lone teacher at the Kentucky Female Orphan School which began the legacy of Midway University.  The school grew as the years went on.  As the curriculum for the school expanded, the school was renamed to Midway College to reflect these changes.  Later, the name of the school was renamed again to Midway University in 2015 to indicate it’s newly achieved university-status.  The school still only accepts female students on-campus but has opened its online programs to all.  Midway University is a private institution.

The Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute opened its doors to students in 1892.  The predecessor to Central Michigan University, the Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute. only offered classes in business, teaching and stenography.  A major focus of the school early on was to train teachers more effectively as the state did not have a formalized education path for teachers at the time.  From its early beginnings, the school has changed rapidly.  At the end of the 19th century, the Michigan State Board of Education took control of the school and renamed it to the Central Michigan Normal School.  In 1959, the school was renamed again to Central Michigan University.  Now, Central Michigan University is home to 22,000 students.  Central Michigan University is a public institution.

Initially located in Phoenix, Arizona, and known as the Phoenix Bible Institute in 1935, the school moved to Oakland California and rebranded as the Western Baptist Bible College eleven years later in 1946.  Later, in the 1950s, the school moved again so El Cerrito, California and then once more in 1969 to Salem, Oregon.  The name of the school was shortened to Western Baptist College in 1973.  The school remained under that name until 2005 at which point the college was renamed to Corban University.  “Corban” is a Hebrew word that means “a gift dedicated to God”. Still located in Salem, Oregon, Corban University is home to approximately 1,100 students and offers a wide array of programs.  Corban University is private institution.

Orleans Seminary was opened in the plans of Nebraska in 1884 by Reverend C. M. Damon, a free Methodist preacher, and his wife. Over the course of the next one-hundred years, the Orleans Seminary experienced many changes that resulted in what is now known as Central Christian College of Kansas.  The first major change was the relocation of the school.  Lacking support of the community in Nebraska, the school moved to McPherson, Kansas in 1914. Upon its arrival in its new location the name was changed to Central Academy and College.  Four years later, the school gained state accreditation and is now one of the state’s old accredited institutions.  Undergoing several name changes, the school finally became the Central Christian College of Kansas in 1999.  Central Christian College of Kansas is a private institution.

Originally established in 1914 as the Denver Bible Institute, the Colorado Christian University would eventually evolve out of this Bible college. At the beginning, the school was not granted a charter and was operating independently of Colorado.  However, the school was eventually given a charter and was renamed to the Denver Bible College to reflect the expanded capabilities of the institution.  The school operated as the Denver Bible College for thirty ears until it merged with the nearby Western Bible Institute.  It was at this point that school was renamed to Rockmont College.  A short lived changed, the school was renamed once again in 1989 to its current name, Colorado Christian University.  Located in Lakewood, Colorado, Colorado Christian University is home to 7,400 students.  Colorado Christian University is a private institution.

A group of Quakers and a Methodist evangelist banded together to establish the Training School for Christian Workers inside the town of Whittier, California in 1899. Eventually, this school would become Azusa Pacific University.  At the time, the Training School for Christian Workers was the first Bible College on the West Coast.  Originally located inside of a church, the school quickly became too large for the church and it was determined that the school would have to move.  Other evangelical schools consolidated with the Training School for Christian Workers and created a nearby campus.  In 1939, the school was granted college-status and was renamed to the Pacific Bible College.  The school continued to undergo a series of mergers until finally, the school was renamed Azusa Pacific University.  Located in Azusa, California, Azusa Pacific University boasts a student body of 11,000.  Asuza Pacific University is a private institution.

The state of Illinois granted a charter in 1901 calling for the establishment of a college and high school in the city of Lisle, Illinois.  The high school would eventually be spun-off to become Benet Academy, and St. Procopius College would eventually become Benedictine University.  Founded by a group of Benedictine monks, St. Procopius opened its doors to students in 1887.  The school was named after St. Procopius Alley from which the monks came from.  It was hopefully a means for the monks to maintain a relationship with the Benedictine Order.  In 1971, the name of the school was simplified to Illinois Benedictine College and then once more to Benedictine University.  The school now hosts 3,300 students and offers fifty-six programs of study.  Benedictine University is a private institution.
