Los Angeles, CA — January 22, 2015 — Groundwork Coffee Co. is proud to announce that its selection of certified organic, fairly traded Signature Blend Coffees and Cold Brew Coffee products are now Non-GMO Project Verified by the Non-GMO Project, North America’s only third-party verification and labeling organization for non-GMO (genetically modified organism) food and products.

Groundwork’s Non-GMO Project Verification means that its products have been produced in compliance with the Non-GMO Project Standard and rigorous best practices for GMO avoidance.

A homegrown Los Angeles company, Groundwork has a storied history of handcrafting Angelenos’ favorite organic coffee drinks using only the finest ingredients. This prestigious verification underscores Groundwork’s ongoing commitment to best practices in the areas of environmental and social health, reflected in the company’s three core values of quality, community, and sustainability.

“Research consistently shows that genetic engineering in the agricultural industry presents significant and very real human, environmental, and economic health risk,” says Groundwork’s Chief Coffee Guy and Licensed Q Grader Jeff Chean. “While our USDA organic certification on all of our coffees and teas has already been providing our customers with a safeguard against the use of GMOs, the certification from the Non-GMO Project is a natural next step in our effort to provide our customers with third-party assurances that our products meet the standards that we believe in and promote. The Non-GMO Project Verification increases the visibility of our coffees’ pedigree and should add to our customers’ confidence in us that we continue to keep an ever-watchful eye on what goes into their cup from the ground up.”

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Groundwork began in Venice Beach, CA, as a single coffee shop that also sold rare and used books. Local demand soon became so great that it began roasting full-time. This small-batch operation soon morphed into one of the very first certified organic coffee roasters in California, and would quickly go on to become the largest organic coffee roaster in Los Angeles. The company’s sustainable, relationship-based, organic coffee sourcing has set an industry standard, as has its solar-powered, low-emissions roasting technology.

Today, Groundwork operates seven café locations throughout the city — with more on the way — and distributes its coffees to more than 850 wholesale customers across the U.S.
