Denis Jašarević, more popularly know by his stage name Gramatik, had a busy year in 2016. The New York-based artist, originally from Potoroz, Slovenia, released what he considers his most accomplished work. Epigram is an album swimming with possibilities, including 35 tracks that culminate the artist’s wide range of interests in various styles of electronic music. Epigram receives a renewed breath of life with the newely released Deluxe Edition.
Released on Dec. 14, 2016 via Gramatik’s label Lowtemp, Epigram: Deluxe Edition features the 10 original tracks from Epigram, but also features 17 remixes and the extended version of “Native Son” featuring Probcause. In addition, the Deluxe Edition of the album also features six unreleased instrumentals from the project.
Epigram opens with a mysterious track titled “Tempus Illusio,” setting listeners up for an epic transition into the best known track from the album, “Satoshi Nakamoto” featuring Adrian Lau and Probcause. “Satoshi Nakamoto” went absolutely viral and inspired many spin-offs. Gramatik even invited select musicians to provide their versions of the song on a later album.
“War of the Currents” follows, which is a glitchy DnB style mix full of big breakdowns. Remixes by Awoltalk, Gill Chang, and Lookas offer refreshing takes on the track. Awoltalk embeds a trap sound full of intense grime into “War of the Currents” that would be a worthy bass-stage anthem, while Lookas kicks up the tempo into high gear.
Quite different from the first three tracks, and bringing listeners back to Gramatik’s hip-hop roots, is “Native Son” featuring Raekwon of Wu-Tang and Leo Napier, which slows things down quite a bit and in the best possible way.
“Native Son,” which was released prior to Epigram’s official release, received a prequel on the album. “Native Son Prequel” feat. Leo Napier has a jazzy flare with funky beats, colorfully showcasing all of Gramatik’s unique tastes. Great Dane gives the track a tribal/future feel thats absolutely addicting.
One of my favorites, “Back to the Future” feat. ProbCause combines Gramatik’s electronic flare with deep hip-hop roots, both of which are deeply embedded into the track. Perhaps one of the strangest tracks on Epigram is “Eat Liver” feat. Laibach. The futuristic track has some seriously weird lyrics that we love and throws us into a feeling of old school undergrounds.
Overall, Gramatik’s insanely all-encompassing album is a complete homerun. Epigram: Deluxe Edition shows off successful collaborations and provides fans with a unique take on an artist’s vision, including instrumentals and remixes of its tracks. If you haven’t given the complete album, which Thump describes as “..packed heavy with collaborations, the album leans on a variety of different sounds while consistently centering around on his penchant for instrumental glitch-bass,” a listen, now is your chance:
