The 25th studio album and their first (full) covers album in “Blue & Lonesome” for The Rolling Stones debuts at the top of the ARIA Albums Chart this week.

“Blue & Lonesome” becomes the 791st No.1 Album in Australia (1965 to 2016) and the 642nd for ARIA (1983 to 2016), plus the 42nd No.1 Album for 2016 and the 437th to debut in the No.1 position. It also becomes the first No.1 album for this decade for the Polydor record label, and the labels nineteenth overall since they first claimed a No.1 in March 1968 with the Cream album “Disraeli Gears”, with the labels last chart-topping album being “Songs for My Mother” by Ronan Keating (4 weeks from 27th April, 2009).

It’s been 22 1/2 years since The Rolling Stones last hit the top here in Australia, when “Voodoo Lounge” (31-July, 1994) spent a single week at No.1, so this becomes the band’s first chart leader for this century, and gives them the longest gap in Australian Albums Chart history between first and current No.1 albums, as the band’s self-titled set was the second No.1 album in Australia (16th Jan, 1965) for three weeks, and below are all of the bands chart-topping albums here:

The Rolling Stones have now had seven No.1 albums in Australia, ranking them equal eighth on the list for ‘Most No.1 Albums 1965-2016’ alongside Rod Stewart, Elton John, The Twelfth Man and Eminem. Plus they have now notched up 25 overall weeks at No.1 from those seven albums, placing them equal 15th on the list of ‘Accumulated Weeks at No.1 1965-2016’ alongside U2 and Savage Garden. This also becomes the bands 35th Top 10 album (4 live, 7 best ofs, 24 studios).

This becomes the ninth album with ‘Blue’ in it’s title, the last one being the Florence + the Machine set “How Big, How Blue…” (8th June, 2015) and the first to feature the word ‘Lonesome’ at the top. This new No.1 album becomes the 148th by an English Act (group, duo or solo) to hit the top (the 5th for 2016 after Bowie, Zayn, 1975 and Passenger), and the 358th overall by a Group (local or overseas) and the 20th for 2016 by a Group too.

For the last weeks of 2015, the Michael Buble seasonal album “Christmas” spent two weeks at No.2, becoming his first year of not returning to the No.1 festive season pole position (2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 all rang with bells at the top for the set), and this week “Christmas” for Mr. Buble is back up one spot to No.2, meaning he could be back at the top next week for a fourteenth week at the summit, and this week he swaps places with the former No.1 “Hardwired… to Self Destruct” by Metallica which for a second week is down one place, this time to No.3.

The other festive season Top 10 this week is the John Farnham and Olivia Newton-John collaboration “Friends for Christmas” which is on hold at No.4 this week, whilst back up one place each are “25” for Adele and “The Secret Daughter” (newly certified ▲Platinum) by Jessica Mauboy to No.5 and No.6 respectively. Keith Urban is back in the country touring at the moment, and his newly re-packaged tour-edition of his former No.1 “Ripcord” (May 2016) jumps back up ten places to notch up a 19th week within the Top 10.

Last weeks No.1 debut for The Weeknd and “Starboy” falls seven places this week to No.8, whilst the second and final Top 10 debut for this week comes in at No.9 and is third studio album for US RnB artist Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) “Awaken, My Love!”, and it becomes his first Top 10 placing here in Australia, whilst his fourth albums chart entry overall, as he previously charted with “Camp” (LP#1, HP-99, Jan 2013), “Because the Internet” (LP#2, HP-37, Dec 2013) and the “Kauai” EP (EP#2, HP-25, Oct 2014) and his current albums second entry “Redbone” jumps into the Top 50 at No.42 becoming his highest charting single here.
