Ningbo Lishe International Airport was completed and inaugurated in June, 1990. With the ever-expanding city of Ningbo, the volume of flights has steadily increased over the years. The third expansion phase in terminal 2 is currently underway to increase the capacity of Ningbo Lishe international airport and support the socio-economic growth of the city.

It is reported that the design idea of terminal 2 comes from the “Hai Ding Ze Bo Ning”. The designer considers the calm waves to be a free architectural form. The architectural form and architectural structure are unified, which not only meet the requirements of modern airport space, but also reflect the local culture and context of the city. The design of the new terminal is simple, beautiful and practical. A “shell- shape” design will be used, and the metal roof and glass curtain walls will creatively merge.

The existing terminals of Lishe International Airport cover 43,500 square meters. The planned annual capacity for these terminals is 3.8 million travellers, which has already been exceeded by 1.2 million. Pressure is high for the extension to be complete in a timely manner.

The city initiated the third-phase expansion project in 2011 and received the approval from The National Development and Reform Commission, at the end of August 2012.

The third-phase expansion should increase capacity to 12 million travellers and 500,000 cargo flights a year by 2020. The surface area of the airport would increase to: 103,000 square meters for terminal 2, 3,000 square meters for the business airplane terminal, 50,000 square meters for the freight station, 14,000 square meters for the Express Center and 412,000 square meters for parking and other auxiliary facilities.

The extension, 2.5 times the size of the existing terminals, is expected to be complete by the end of 2016.
