Good morning 49er Faithful! We are back for our breakdown of college football's Week 4 action. We have game previews and a rundown of notable draft-eligible prospects for Saturday's slate of college football games. Each week, we will not be highlighting every game and every prospect. Rather, we will grab a few notable games in the morning and then in the afternoon and highlight names you should pay attention to. This will help people build a list of names to know when we get into the offseason.

No. 8 LSU @ Syracuse

The LSU players and fans have to be feeling high on themselves, after they steamrolled Auburn 45-21, led by the 228 yard rushing performance of Leonard Fournette. Fournette is drawing national attention down in Baton Rouge, La. and is being considered as one of the Heisman favorites, but believe it or not, he is only a sophomore and we are focused on draft-eligible players, therefore we move on to whom the Tigers are showcasing, starting with safety Jalen Mills. He is a true safety but can also play man-on-man, due to the fact he has much experience at the corner position. Mills has smooth hips and exceptional athleticism which helps him play against a bigger receiver. The biggest knock on Mills is his run support, which is very poor, it almost seems like he is sort of scared to put his nose in there.
LSU also presents CB Tre'Davious White, a junior who has already declared for the 2016 draft. There is a lot to like in his game, he possesses great ball skills and makes a ton of plays with his back to the ball, to add to his good recovery twitch. His athleticism and ability to play with a taller receiver should draw tons of interest from NFL teams. He plays with quick feet, and is not easily shaken in coverage, but could stand to improve his run defense. White is a solid tackler but does not show much willingness, especially when attempting to shed a block to make a tackle.
Syracuse doesn't present too much draft-eligible talent, but they still do have some noteworthy names. Kendall Moore, No. 87, is somebody to look out for on Saturday. He had 39 receiving yards on just 3 catches, and one of those catches included a 13-yard snag on third down from the 20. The junior from Chicago who stands at 6'5", 245lbs, is a good reception receiver and can head into traffic to make a must-needed reception. I compare him to Dwayne Allen of the Colts due to his strong hands and contribution in the run-game as a blocking tight end.

It should be a decent matchup, but more importantly the teams are both showcasing some interesting players, beginning with Wake Forest defensive end, Desmond Floyd. Floyd has surprisingly good athleticism for a big guy (6'5" 250 lbs) in addition to his incredible vertical leap, leading to more pass deflections. Next up is wide receiver KJ Brent (6'4" 190 lbs.), a guy I compare to Torrey Smith because of his mannerisms and ability to stretch the field. Brent was a transfer from South Carolina (which is sort of surprising considering he had good production there) nevertheless; I am sure the Demon Deacons are happy to have on the receiving core, which desperately needed help.
Indiana has another bullet in the chamber after the loss of Tevin Coleman, and his name is Jordan Howard. Howard has been carrying this offense, and will continue to do so, leading the Hoosiers to their first 3-0 start since 2010. He is more of a power-back rather than a shifty one. Howard is a junior transfer from UAB they called in to replace Coleman, and he has definitely fit in, garnering 507 yards on 78 carries thus far this year. Howard is a three-down running back which is a huge plus considering he is a guy you can rely on to get you those couple of yards you may need, rather than having to substitute or even pass on that play.
Senior quarterback Nate Sudfeld is opening up the run-game for Howard even more by making teams respect their pass game also. Sudfeld possesses NFL size, a strong arm and mobility within the pocket. Teams are looking for Sudfeld to improve his completion percentage and consistency, which sort of go hand-in-hand.

Maryland showcases a couple of exciting players starting with the most electric punt returner in college football, Will Likely. Likely set the record for most punt return yards in a game against Richmond with 233. Although it boggles my mind why they continued to punt to him, nevertheless he still torched them. He's a guy that is in on every play, contributes in the run, and his athleticism is able to make up for some of his errors in pass coverage, despite only being 5'7". Yannick Ngakoue, No. 7, is a jersey to look out for on Saturday in Morgantown. The junior defensive end stands at 6'2" and 255 pounds, last year he collected 13.5 tackles for loss and six sacks, earning him honorable mention All-Big ten from the media. He has big-play ability and creates something out of nothing off of the edge, due to his decisive speed, considering his size.
West Virginia has a couple of intriguing draft prospects, starting with the head-hunting safety, Karl Joseph, No. 8. He has established himself as one of the best open-field tacklers in the country, mostly due to his consistency in that facet of his game. Even though he is a smaller guy, he can move up and play as a 3-4 linebacker, much like the former second round draft choice from Samford (for the Niners fans), Jaquiski Tartt. Joseph needs to prove to teams this year he can play in the back end of the defense, beginning with him taking better angles to the football.
Junior quarterback Skylar Howard is drawing attention to himself as well, probably because he is leading the NCAA in passer efficiency. Howard is a dual-threat quarterback and sort of a risk-taker, which may be able to slide at the collegiate level and have success, but could end up having trouble in the NFL relying mainly on his athleticism to do the job for him (just ask Johnny Manziel).

Mississippi State has two offensive weapons to keep an eye on in QB Dak Prescott, No. 15 and junior WR De'Runnya Wilson, No. 1. Dak Prescott is a solid mobile quarterback with an improved game in the pocket. He shows good awareness and the capability to go through his progressions, but also explodes out of the pocket using his agility and athleticism to be a playmaker on the field. Wide receiver De'Runnya Wilson displays a nice combination of size (6'4" - 225 lbs.), length, athleticism, and physicality. Wilson displays toughness as a blocker and is a good pass catching possession type receiver. He needs to become more consistent in his overall game in order to be considered a high draft pick.
Junior DT Chris Jones, No. 96, showcases an impressive combination of size (6'4" - 308 lbs.), quickness, strength, and athleticism. The former basketball star is looking to have a breakout season as a starter replacing last years' phenom, Preston Smith. CB Will Redmond, No. 2, displays elite speed (4.38 40), athleticism, and plays physical with good coverage and ball skills, and brings value in the return game. He needs to improve his tackling.
Other Mississippi State players to keep an eye on are: CB Taveze Calhoun, No. 23 and FS Kendrick Market, No. 26.
Unfortunately, one of the top prospects in the game is still out with a hip injury he suffered during the season opener. The player in question is Auburn's redshirt sophomore DE Carl Lawson, No. 55. After a very impressive freshman year, Lawson missed the entire 2014 season with a season ending injury during spring practices (torn ACL). Poised for a breakout year, Lawson displays good size, a thick and stout frame, explosiveness off the edge with excellent speed, flexibility, agility, and change of direction skills. He is very athletic and strong with a relentless pursuit to the ball carrier. Showcases a tremendous quick first-step and a consistent high-motor. He is very strong at the point of attack and quite simply, a dominant disrupter on the field.
A few other Auburn draft-eligible players likely on 49ers' radar are junior DT Montravius Adams, No. 1, a versatile defensive lineman with solid quickness and agility to be a disruptive force in the backfield; ILB Cassanova McKinzy, No. 8, a physical and solid tackler with great skills against the run displaying sound stacking and shedding technique; and WR D'haquile "Duke" Williams, No. 1, a fantastic and physical wide receiver prospect with a great combination of size (6'2" - 224 lbs.), speed, and athleticism with strong hands and nice body control.

No. 9 UCLA Bruins at No. 19 Arizona Wildcats

Going into this game, I was eager to highlight three highly touted prospects from UCLA; however, it appears the injury bug has not been kind to UCLA this season. Three of UCLA's top four draft-eligible prospects have gone down with season ending injuries. The extremely talented and explosive athlete in junior OLB Myles Jack, No. 30, is out for the year with an anterior meniscus injury suffered earlier this week during practice. The injury is likely to keep him sidelined 4-6 months. Jack's athleticism and skills are insane. He plays with tremendous vision and awareness, a very explosive and reliable tackler, can line up on the inside and outside with solid coverage skills (need a guy to cover your wide receiver on the outside in a pinch, Jack is your man), and he could easily be a high round draft prospect as a running back as well. Jack would be a stellar fit as an inside linebacker in the 49ers 3-4 defense, but with his versatility, he can be utilized practically anywhere. There is a possibility Jack may receive a medical redshirt and return to UCLA the following season; however, it has been reported Jack has a $5 million insurance policy to protect against injury, which tends to be a precursor of one entering the draft. Case in point, our very own Arik Armstead, a junior last year at Oregon, purchased a large disability policy prior to the start of the 2014 collegiate season.
The two other unfortunate draft-eligible players lost to the season are junior DT Eddie Vanderdoes, No. 47; and CB Fabian Moreau, No. 10. Vanderdoes tore his ACL in the season opener. He is a powerful run stuffer in the middle that eats up blockers and has solid vision. He could redshirt this year and come back to UCLA the following season, but his impressive skill-set could turn heads and entice him to declare for the draft. Fabian Moreau was lost to the season with a Lisfranc injury (foot injury). The senior, displayed tremendous athleticism and speed to go along with his impressive fluidity and nice ball skills. Converted from the running back position, Moreau is still relatively raw to the position, but has been steadily developing. He could very likely apply for a medical redshirt and return to UCLA to polish up his skills, or take his talents to the next level.
All three of these injured players are ripe for what I like to refer to as a Baalke Delight (#BaalkeDelight). We all know the proclivity of Baalke drafting injured players and "red-shirting" them on the backend of the 49ers roster. With a potential of several compensatory picks, and possibly a combined 11 draft picks in total, it is quite possible Baalke continues to take advantage of the market inefficiencies in selecting injured college players.
Moving on from the injury plagued UCLA prospects, let us look at a player that is actually playing in this game. UCLA's junior DT Kenny Clark, No. 97, is a beast of a man clogging up the middle as a powerful immovable run stuffer with great explosion. Clark easily takes on multiple blockers freeing up his line backers to roam freely in order to chase down the ball carrier. He also shows versatility to play nose guard and the five-technique.
Another Bruin to keep an eye on: WR Jordan Payton, No. 9. Also, check out freshman phenom QB Josh Rosen, No. 3.
Arizona had a scare early in the season when they nearly lost their stud star player for the season. The junior ILB Scooby Wright III, No. 33, went down in the season opener with an apparent knee injury. Luckily, Scooby escaped with only meniscus damage and was seen practicing this week and should likely be playing against the Bruins today (game-time decision). Scooby has amazing instincts and a tremendous nose for the ball. With his continuous high effort and good tackling skills, Scooby is always a huge factor in disrupting offenses utilizing his impressive strength and athleticism. The fundamentally sound linebacker is a good projection inside in the 49ers 3-4 scheme. His gap penetration, awareness, burst, and spin moves off blockers are no doubt impressive and appears to have a similar game of that of the retired Chris Borland. Scooby may not be overly athletic as say Myles Jack, but he is a true football player with the instincts to be extremely reliable at the next level.

USC has several draft-eligible players to keep an eye on. On the offensive side of the ball we start with my projected top center prospect in C Max Tuerk, No. 75. Versatility is the name of the game for Tuerk. During his 36 career starts, Tuerk has had 14 starts at left guard, 16 starts at center, 5 at left tackle, and 1 at right tackle. Relishing his status as the jack of all trades in the offensive linemen community, Tuerk showcases a very unique skill-set not usually seen in the center position. For one, he is very tall at 6'6" with a slender build, which makes him look like an agile tackle in a zone-blocking scheme. Along with his height, length, and agility, Tuerk also displays explosiveness, mobility, impressive footwork, speed, good technique, tremendous awareness, and balance. He is quick in reaching the second level and although he does not possess a lot of power, his sound technique and footwork does the job in opening spaces. Moreover, when he pulls, he showcases his impressive speed and awareness in quickly finding targets and eliminating them. He shows an excellent base when anchoring and solid technique utilizing his very long arms in pass protection. He has a high football IQ to go along with his impressive leadership qualities.
Two other offensive players to keep an eye on are QB Cody Kessler, No. 6; and RB Tre Madden, No. 23. Cody Kessler, a bit undersized at 6'1" - 215 lbs., is an efficient accurate quarterback easily capable of reading the entire field and shows consistency in the pocket as well as patience. Kessler is starting the season off right with a 78.7% completion percentage (70/89) thus far, with 922 yards thrown and 10 touchdowns. Kessler is a very intelligent prospect with great vision, pocket awareness, and instincts, and has experience operating in a pro-style system.
Last week, RB Tre Madden tweaked his surgically repaired knee (torn ligament in 2012) during last weekends' game against Stanford, but should be ready to face Arizona State today. The explosive and athletically gifted back with solid speed and agility displays one trait that could be problematic, durability issues. Along with the injury in 2012, and sporadic injuries plaguing him in 2013, Madden also missed out on the entire 2014 season with a turf-toe injury. If he can stay healthy, Madden could end up being a middle round gem for an NFL team at the next level. Interesting nugget, Madden's grandfather is a scout for the St. Louis Rams and his uncle coaches for the New York Jets.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Trojan's junior OLB Su'a Cravens, No. 21, is a hybrid linebacker/safety with a physicality and versatility to his game making him a true playmaker on the defensive side of the ball with tremendous instincts. He is adept at rushing the passer, fierce in run support, and very talented in coverage. The fluidity, explosion, athleticism, and speed Cravens possesses makes him an ideal prospect many defensive coaches would love having roam around in their defense.
ILB Anthony Sarao, No. 56, might be 6'0" with cleats on, but the undersized inside linebacker prospect displays a great all-around game with sound instincts, reliable as a tackle, and a never ending motor. CB Kevon Seymour, No. 13, tweaked his knee in the Week 2 matchup against Idaho and appears to be likely out or reduced to emergency status for the game against Arizona State. Nonetheless, Seymour displays a good combination of size, length, speed, quickness, and athleticism. He showcases good ball skills, nice fluidity, quality instincts, and is aggressive in run support. Look for his game to develop throughout the season and likely raise his draft stock, provided he can stay healthy.
Other USC players of note are: FB Soma Vainuku, No. 31 and DT Antwaun Woods, No. 99.
Arizona State is highlighting a few draft-eligible players of note, starting with two guard prospects in OG Christian Westerman, No. 55, an extremely strong and powerful offensive lineman with impressive foot quickness and solid hand technique; and OG Vi Teofilo, No. 73, an aggressive right guard with sound leverage and hand technique.
Another Arizona State player to keep an eye on is ILB Antonio Longino, No. 32, a physical and tenacious explosive athlete displaying good awareness and improved hand technique. Longino also brings value on special teams.
Other Arizona State players of note are: QB Mike Bercovici, No. 2; WR D.J. Foster, No. 8; CB Lloyd Carrington, No. 8; CB Kweishi Brown, No. 10; and SS Jordan Simone, No. 38.
