We are back to highlight draft prospects to watch in Week 2 college football action.
Good morning 49er Faithful! We are back for our breakdown of college football's Week 2 action. We have game previews and a rundown of notable draft-eligible prospects for Saturday's slate of college football games. Each week, we will not be highlighting every game and every prospect. Rather, we will grab a few notable games in the morning and then in the afternoon and highlight names you should pay attention to. This will help people build a list of names they know when we get into the offseason.
The first half of the previews come courtesy of Jake Narayan, and the second half come from Greg Valerio. Enjoy Saturday's action!
Oregon State Beavers @ Michigan Wolverines - 9 a.m. ABC
I hope everybody's week went well, but Saturday is here and it's time for some more college football. We start things off on Saturday with an intriguing matchup of Oregon State @ Michigan. The highly anticipated first game of Jim Harbaugh's coaching career at Michigan was a let-down, but it was mostly due to the bad quarterback play of Jake Rudock, the fifth-year senior. Rudock threw three costly interceptions last Thursday at Utah, resulting in a 24-17 loss. Harbaugh recently stated that Rudock is without a doubt, the starter heading into week 2.
The Junior running back De'Veon Smith from Warren, Ohio, is also an interesting prospect. If the quarterback problems continue Smith should have a heavier workload that I think he can handle. Smith, who stands 5'11`, 230 lbs. is going to be a huge problem for defenses this year. No. 4 is a tough runner with decent balance and can lower his shoulder to run someone over. Smith is poised to have a great year at MU and should take the majority of the touches. Tight end Jake Butt also stood out last Thursday, he totaled 8 catches for 93 yards and a score. Following the game on Thursday, Harbaugh mentioned him, saying, "Jake Butt had a heck of a game, Jake Butt played one heck of a football game." The junior from Pickerington, Ohio, has ideal size for the position, at 6'6", 250 lbs. He has the ability to go up for a ball and has "sure" hands to make a much needed reception. Butt has a bright future and I can see him being selected in the first couple of rounds in the draft.
I think we can all agree Oregon State is one of the worst teams in the Pac-12, and do not have any signs of improving drastically some time soon. The freshman Seth Collins won the job at quarterback this year, and he threw a pair of touchdowns in his debut last weekend. Since we are focusing on draft-eligible players, let's move on to Storm Woods, the senior running back. Woods has 2,183 rushing yards on 440 carries and 24 touchdowns in his career at OSU. He has great patience and vision when he runs. Woods should be a leader on the field this year entering his senior season. If I had to say when he would be drafted, or drafted at all, I predict Woods will be selected in the 7th round.

Minnesota Golden Gophers @ Colorado State Rams - 12:30 p.m. CBS Sports Network
I am not sure very many people predicted Colorado State to win ten games last year, however, they did, finishing 10-3. By doing so the Rams earned themselves a bowl game against Utah last year, but came up short. CSU will be operating under a new head coach in Mike Bobo, who was the offensive coordinator at Georgia last season. The absence of quarterback Garret Grayson will be the hardest obstacle to overcome this year, as he threw for over 3,600 yards. Nick Stevens is taking over the reins at QB this year, and he had no trouble last week throwing for five touchdowns. Stevens will have a great target in wide receiver Rashard Higgns, who was exceptional last year garnering 96 receptions for 1,750 yards. Xavier Williams is also an athlete to watch at the receiver position, he and Higgins combine to make a nasty duo.
The defensive side of the ball for CSU should be interesting. They do have most of their more talented players returning, starting with linebacker Cory James. James was junior last year, totaling 6.5 sacks and 51 tackles. Senior safety, Trent Matthews is returning along with junior corner back, Tyree Simmons, who both had three interceptions last year. Both of these guys have a chance to be drafted this year and make a NFL roster. The CSU secondary should be the strong suit of this year's defense, and if the front seven can show up, the Rams season looks promising.
After coming off of a loss to TCU, the Gophers are going to be in for another tough battle as they take on Colorado State, in Colorado. Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner struggled last week against TCU, but he showed flashes of being a QB who can turn the Gophers around. Junior receiver Drew Wolitarski should make an impact this year standing at 6'3", 215 lbs. He did play in 8 games last year but did not start, that should not be the case this year as Minnesota is low on offensive weapons with the departure of RB David Cobb and TE Maxx Williams.

San Diego State @ Cal - 2:00pm Pac 12 Network
Coach Sonny Dykes looks to be turning this California team around, after a long drought of awful seasons. Last year the Bears went 5-7, 3-6 (Pac-12), but have higher hopes and expectations with returning top prospect at quarterback, Jared Goff. Goff, a junior, has ideal length and is very poised in the pocket, to add to his impressive accuracy. He is an exciting player to watch, especially in offensive coordinator Tony Franklin's spread offense. Goff is expected to have topple his last years performance, and become a first round draft selection. Daniel Lasco is also a name to look out for on Saturday. The senior from Woodland, Texas, took over the starting role for Cal last year, and excelled. He is definitely going to be a surprise for teams coming out of the backfield, as most defenses are focusing on the Bear's pass happy offense. He is a very strong power back more so than a shifty one, and has good balance when bouncing off of tackles. Lasco is one of the most underrated players in the country, and I see him having even better production at the next level.
Cal does have intriguing receivers, and I believe these guys unite to make one of the most lethal receiving cores in the country; Trevor Davis, Maurice Harris, Kenny Lawler, Stephen Anderson and Bryce Treggs who has some serious talent. Everyone of these guys are draft eligible and I think they all have a chance to be. Trevor Davis is somebody who can stretch the field and has great hand-eye coordination which is huge in playing the role of being able to stretch the field as I had said, in addition Davis helps out on special teams as the punt returner. Treggs is a superb slot receiver and Goff trusts him when he needs someone to make a clutch catch. He decided to surpass the draft last year in hopes to have a break out senior season. He looks to be a nice complementary player but I think NFL teams want to see more big play ability in him.
"They never huddle and they run to the line of scrimmage, like a lot of spread teams do nowadays. As long as they can get first downs, it dramatically increases the number of snaps they get. If you get more snaps, obviously, you gain more yards and score more points," said coach Rocky Long in a recent interview about Cal. The Aztecs will try to control the ball against the Bears, and that is going to start with running back D.J. Pumphrey. Pumphery was fourth in CFB rushing yards with 1,873, good enough for a school record. He is a smaller back but can accelerate and fit through tight creases with a 4.3 second 40 time.
The defense is going to be the best thing San Diego State has going for them. They were very exciting last year, and most of the starting unit will be back for the 2015 season. It should be a high intensity matchup, as a stronger defensive team takes on a high scoring passing attack offense. It will also be interesting to watch an exceptional defensive line of the Aztecs take on a weaker Cal offensive line and see how Goff will play under some pressure, which will force him to deliver the ball quicker.

East Carolina Pirates at Florida Gators

Channel: ESPN 2

East Carolina will be showcasing two draft-eligible positions that are likely needs for the 49ers going into 2016. Vernon Davis and Garrett Celek are both free agents after the 2015 season, which leaves the 49ers with Vance McDonald, Blake Bell, and Busta Anderson as the tight ends going into 2016. East Carolina's TE Bryce Williams, No. 80, displays a great combination of size (6'6 - 258 lbs.), speed, and strength with very good balls skills, solid hands, and is a very reliable pass catcher. Coming from an Air Raid offense, Williams will need to improve upon his inline blocking.
The second East Carolina prospect of note is OLB Montese Overton, No.51, who is an insanely tremendous athlete with elite speed covering a lot of ground sideline-to-sideline. Overton has been clocked in the 4.3s in the 40, 3.97 short shuttle, a 36.5" vertical, a bench press of 345 pounds, squat of 490 pounds, and a 323 pound power clean. Moreover, Overton has some solid stats with 68 tackles, 11.5 TFLs, and 3 sacks in 2014, and looks poised on improving his production. The Pirates' outside linebacker could be looked at as a potential inside linebacker in the 49ers 3-4 scheme.
Other East Carolina prospects to keep an eye on are: OT Ike Harris, No. 69 and ILB Zeek Bigger, No. 44.

OT Ike Harris, No. 69, 6'7 - 309 lbs., 5.53 40 - East Carolina (7th)
OG Dontae Levingston,No. 71, 6'4 - 306 lbs., 5.28 40 - East Carolina (UFA)

Florida players to watch
The Florida Gators are showcasing several prospects worth noting. Two pass catchers to keep an eye on are WR Demarcus Robinson, No. 11 and TE Jake McGee, No. 83. Demarcus Robinson, a junior, is a vertical threat that can take the top off coverages and shows great quickness and agility off the line of scrimmage to gain separation. Robinson displays impressive stop and start quickness and burst with good hands and nice ball skills. Unfortunately, it looks like Robinson is in the dog house, since he was mysteriously dropped to third string for this game. We will see how long that lasts. Tight end Jake McGee displays a nice combination of height (6'5") speed, and athleticism. A very sound reliable pass catcher with good hands, McGee is poised to have a breakout year after sitting out the 2014 season with two broken bones (tibia and fibula) in his left leg.
DE Jonathan Bullard, No. 90, showcases impressive quickness and versatility, lining up all over the place for the Gators. Bullard, possibly a five-technique fit for the 49ers, displays great strength in the run game and quickness and solid hand technique to get by defenders on the inside. ILB Antonio Morrison, No. 3, is coming back from a devastating knee injury he suffered in the Belk Bowl December 2014. Durability issues are a concern for the tackling machine, since he's had a history of knee issues; nevertheless, Morrison displays great awareness, strength, and speed, and should be definitely on the radar as an inside linebacker prospect for the 49ers.
CB Vernon Hargreaves III, No. 1, a junior, is arguably one of the top corner prospects in this years' class. VHIII is an amazing athlete on the field showcasing tremendous quickness, burst, speed, and athleticism. He is technically sound as a cover corner and solid in run support and is an eager tackler. VHIII also shows versatility in the return game and a few plays on offense showcasing his explosion and playmaking abilities. One of the top cover prospects, VHIII simply lacks the ideal size (5'11"). CB Brian Poole, No. 24, another smaller corner prospect at 5'10", displays versatility in playing the corner and nickel position with great quickness, burst, and speed. Poole also showcases great awareness, impressive open field tackler, good closing speed off the edge, and looks to be a solid Zone type corner at the next level.

WR *Demarcus Robinson, No. 11, 6'1 - 197 lbs., 4.54 40 - Florida (1st-2nd)
WR Latroy Pittman Jr., No. 9, 5'11 - 215 lbs., 4.65 40 - Florida (UFA)
TE Jake McGee, No. 83, 6'5 243 lbs., 4.83 40 - Florida (6th-7th) Received another year of eligibility to make it his 6th. Broke two bones in his left leg September 2014, out for 2014 season.
OG Trip Thurman, No. 63, 6'5 - 310 lbs., 5.38 40 - Florida (UFA)

Oregon is showcasing an impressive wide receiver to keep an eye on in WR Bralon Addison, No. 11. Addison, a junior, is coming off a 2014 injury tearing his ACL on his left knee, but he is poised to continue his impressive playmaking skills showcasing his elite speed and explosion. The 5'10" Addison has video game-like movement and has been considered a Brandin Cooks clone. He also brings value in the return game.
Another Oregon Duck poised to make a return from an injury plagued season is OT Tyler Johnstone, No. 64. Johnstone is coming off tearing his ACL on his right knee twice in two consecutive seasons. Nevertheless, the left tackle displays a great combination of size (6'6" - 295 lbs.), length, quickness, and athleticism. He showcases quick feet and fluidity and is extremely impressive in pass protection. If he can stay healthy, Johnstone would be an ideal fit in a zone blocking scheme, but will need to increase his strength for the next level.
One of my favorite 3-4 defensive end prospects that is dominant as a 4/4i-technique is DE DeForest Buckner, No. 44. Buckner showcases a superb combination of size (6'7" - 290 lbs.), length, power, awareness, quickness, and athleticism. The former high school basketball player is explosive off the line of scrimmage providing a tremendous jolt at the point of attack, utilizing his length and long arms to keep blockers away and easily stack and sheds blockers to pursue the ball carrier. Shows commitment to gap integrity and dominates with leverage, powering through offensive linemen with an impressive bull rush. If the 49ers are looking to bookend their defensive ends for the future, Deforest Buckner would make a nice compliment to Arik Armstead.
Other Oregon Ducks to keep an eye on are: WR Bryon Marshall, No. 9; OG Matt Hegarty, No. 77; and OLB Christian French, No. 96

The Spartans boast several draft-eligible players, one of which will likely be one of the top quarterbacks selected in the 2016 Draft, QB Connor Cook #18. Cook, the most pro-ready quarterback in this years' quarterback class, is poised to improve upon his inconsistency by showcasing his impressive pinpoint accuracy and beautiful throws over-the-top. OT Jack Conklin #74, the redshirt junior, is a tough powerful mauler at left tackle (has experience at right tackle too), excels in the run game, and is reliable in pass protection, but does have issues with speed off the edge.
DE Shilique Calhoun #89 (possible 3-4 OLB in the 49ers scheme), showcases good speed to power off the edge and can set the edge in the run game, but will need to be more consistent and gain more strength. DT Joel Heath #92, a very athletic and strong player easily capable of occupying blocks, is stout at the point of attack, and has the nice size (6'5 - 296 lbs.) to be a five-technique in the 49ers scheme.
Other Michigan State players to keep an eye on: WR DeAnthony Arnett #5, C Jack Allen #66, DT Lawrence Thomas #8, OLB Darien Harris #45, and SS RJ Willaimson #26.

LSU is showcasing two pass catchers to keep an eye on this game in WR Travin Dural, No. 83 and TE Dillon Gordon, No. 85. Travin Dural, a junior, is a vertical threat downfield showcasing an impressive combination of size (6'2" - 192 lbs.), speed (sub 4.4 40) and athleticism. 49ers wide receiver coach, Adam Henry, has some experience with Dural, and we know how instrumental Henry was in coaching Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry. Dillon Gordon is a massive tight end prospect at 6'4" - 295 pounds. A true power blocking tight end, Gordon utilizes his strength and bulk to drive block defenders and athleticism to be an outlet threat in the passing game.
OG Vadal Alexander, No. 74, showcases an excellent combination of size, strength, very long arms, athleticism, and instincts. A true mauler and road grader, Alexander is very powerful athlete that plays with a nastiness. He is an exceptional run blocker, quickly engages opponents and mauls his way driving defenders with explosion and power. Shows good technique, anchors well, nice lateral movement and decent footwork in pass protection, and has a heavy and powerful punch that jolts defenders.
LSU also has two junior defenders to keep an eye on in ILB Kendell Beckwith, No. 52 and CB Tre'Davious White, No. 16. Beckwith is an amazing sideline-to-sideline athlete with great size, speed, and explosion. If he declares, look for Beckwith to be on the 49ers radar. Tre'Davious White is a top corner prospect with great ball skills, fluidity, and awareness. Plays very well with his back against the ball, White displays solid covering skills and tracks the ball quite well. He also brings value in the return game.
Other LSU prospects to keep an eye on are: OLB Lamar Lois, No. 11 and P Jamie Keehn, No. 38.

Mississippi State players to watch
Mississippi State has two offensive weapons to keep an eye on in QB Dak Prescott, No. 15 and junior WR De'Runnya Wilson, No. 1. Dak Prescott is a solid mobile quarterback with an improved game in the pocket. He shows good awareness and the capability to go through his progressions, but also explodes out of the pocket using his agility and athleticism to be a playmaker on the field. Wide receiver De'Runnya Wilson displays a nice combination of size (6'4" - 225 lbs.), length, athleticism, and physicality. Wilson displays toughness as a blocker and is a good pass catching possession type receiver. He needs to become more consistent in his overall game in order to be considered a high draft pick.
Junior DT Chris Jones, No. 96, showcases an impressive combination of size (6'4 - 308 lbs.), quickness, strength, and athleticism. The former basketball star is looking to have a breakout season as a starter replacing last years' phenom, Preston Smith. CB Will Redmond, No. 2, displays elite speed (4.38 40), athleticism, and plays physical with good coverage and ball skills, and brings value in the return game. He needs to improve his tackling.
Other Mississippi State players to keep an eye on are: CB Taveze Calhoun, No. 23 and FS Kendrick Market, No. 26.
