The time has come to close up the Niners Nation mock draft database for another year. Mike Mayock released his annual pre-draft mock draft, which is the sign the big event is finally here!
Draft day is here, and 2014 first round mock drafts are officially coming to an end! I get specific because we might have a 2nd round mock for you tomorrow. But other than that, the speculation finally starts to come to an end...for now. We've got a few mocks to close things out, including the final SB Nation 2014 NFL mock draft (actually a pair of mocks).
Additionally, NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock has his one mock draft of the year. Mayock puts out his one mock draft per year shortly before the draft. Normally he focuses on draft rankings, and rightfully so, as there is a little more value in those. Mock drafts are good for discussing more abstract principles, as the specific players are at best, moderately educated guesses.
For his 2014 NFL mock draft, Mayock has the 49ers selecting Notre Dame defensive lineman Stephon Tuitt. The defensive line selection remains fairly blah for many of us, but given how the 49ers can sometimes surprise us, we should probably not act too shocked if they do in fact go for a big guy for the defensive line. Of course, while Mayock's name is attached to the mock draft, it doesn't make it that much better than any other mocks out there. Mayock has gotten some names correct over the years (Rich Eisen was tweeting that Mayock got Rodgers at No. 24 correct). However, he also had Geno Smith going in the top ten last year, and missed his fair share. Feel free to take it however you want.
For those looking for some possible 49ers insight, three members of the PR department put together their own mock drafts at 49ers.com. Taylor Price has the 49ers drafting Fresno State wide receiver Davante Adams, Andrew Pentis has the 49ers drafting Ohio State cornerback Bradley Roby, and Scott Kegley has the 49ers drafting Virginia Tech cornerback Kyle Fuller. Of course, if you think the folks at 49ers.com have some insider information, this interview Scott Kegley conducted with Trent Baalke would indicate the exact opposite.
Since today marks day 1 of the 2014 NFL Draft, I thought I'd use Mayock's mock draft to sort of "close out" our mock draft database. It has been posted HERE for the length of the offseason, but to make it just a little bit easier for people, I've copied and pasted the table down below. You should be able to sort through by any of the five columns.
As the mocks have developed, defensive end/outside linebacker Kony Ealy and cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste have both become more regular fixtures, with three appearances apiece. Cody Latimer was at the top of the list with four mentions, while Jason Verrett was also in the threes. More noteworthy, we have 13 wide receiver picks, and nine cornerback picks.
