Good Morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning:
1) Operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, on Monday, arrested wanted journalist, Ahmed Salkida, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja over his link with Boko Haram insurgents. Salkida who arrived at NAIA aboard Emirates flight, EK 785, was taken from the door of the aircraft by members of the security forces.
2) The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, seems to have gotten to another level as it has disowned its twitter handle and now working on the official opening of a new one. The party further disowned one Deji Adeyanju as its Director of New Media. This is contained in statement signed by Chinwe Nnorom, Head of PDP Publicity Unit, on Monday in Abuja and as directed by the Chairman, National Caretaker Committee of the party, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi.
3) A former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has said it was a wicked statement for anyone to blame the bad economic situation in the country on President Muhammadu Buhari. Reacting to claims by Kogi lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye, who asked the President to sack some of his economic team over the country’s economy said it was wicked and inconsiderate.
4) The All Progressives Congress,APC, on Monday, assured Nigerians that the current economic crisis will be resolved under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, through prayer and patience. This was contained in statement by the party’s National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni in Abuja. The party further accused the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of been responsible for the country’s current economic woes.
5) Following reports that the Federal Government was planning to further increase the pump price of petrol, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu and the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru, on Monday, dismissed the reports, saying there was not such plan. They spoke to State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
6) The Chibok Community in Borno State has alleged that the Federal Government and the military are in the know about where the adopted girls are being kept by Boko Haram, dismissing claims by
the government that there was no credible intelligence on the location of the girls. The spokesperson for the Kibaku Area Development Association, (Chibok community), Dr. Manasseh Allen, disclosed the community’s position.
7) The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says the Nigerian Air Force will commence any moment from now, a mock counter- terrorism exercise at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The Managing Director of FAAN, Malam Saleh Dunoma made this known in a statement issued by the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mr Yakubu Datti, in Abuja on Monday. He said the exercise may slow down activities at the airport.
8) The Naira on Monday appreciated slightly at the interbank market, gaining only N0.57 against the dollar. It closed at N314.20 from N314.77 it traded at the interbank market on Friday. The troubled currency went down three points to N425 at the parallel market, from its Friday rate of N422 against the dollar.
9) Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, on Monday, reiterated President Muhammadu Buhari’s unyielding resolve in the fight against corruption, stressing that the President will go after anyone involved in corrupt practice even those in his cabinet. Amaechi made this statement while delivering a keynote address at the Cambridge University.
10) A young man identified as Abdulateef, who allegedly stabbed his employer, Mrs. Mabel Okafor, to death in the Ajah area of Lagos State has been arrested by the police in the State. Abdulateef reportedly stabbed the woman in the stomach in her apartment on Close 9, Victoria Garden City, Ajah, on August 17, and fled with her valuables, including three mobile phones, a trinket and some clothes.
