This little miss was sick for a couple of days last week. It seriously was so sad. The silver lining was getting to snuggle with her a lot!
She sat next to Nick one afternoon to have a snack. It turned into a 3 hour nap time. That's when you know she's sick!
Cole is playing Caprock basketball again and he loves it. He still doesn't completely get the idea of the game. Instead of going after the ball, he finds a spot and just kind of hovers there (it's more like he's doing a little dance). He's a great hustler, though, and is always the first one up and down the court.
One of my young women and 3 of her siblings were in the high school play last week (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Cole, Maliya, and I went to the matinee show on Saturday and they loved it. The first half of the show was 'in front' of the chocolate factory gates, and Maliya and Cole could hardly contain their excitement for the gates to open. Sadly there wasn't much to see once the gates opened, but the second half of the play was fantastic, which made up for the scenery.
Last Sunday I decided my kids needed to be introduced to some of the finer things in life, so we had an Oreo challenge. More like an Oreo taste testing. Each of the kids got to try an Oreo four different ways: dipped in milk, frosting eaten and then dipped in milk, w/ pb on top, and w/ extra frosting on top. They ended up dipping every option in milk and liking all of them! (I was a little surprised about Maliya.) It was fun.
A couple of weeks ago Cole came home from school and told me he couldn't read small letters. I thought he just thought glasses were cool and wanted his own, so I told him he had to wait for four school days before we decided whether or not to go to the eye dr. He dutifully counted out each day the week after that ('Mom, today was the first day and I still couldn't see') and by Thursday was convinced that we needed to go see the dr. right then. I had to keep up my end of the deal, so I called in and was able to schedule him an appointment for that Saturday (wow!).
Cole was so excited for his appointment ... until we actually got to the office on Saturday. Then he was suddenly nervous. Luckily the dr. was awesome. He was seriously the best kid-anything dr. I've ever met. He quickly put Cole at ease (all he really had to do was say 'no eye drops' and Cole was good) and almost just as quickly confirmed that Cole needed glasses. I was shocked! I felt so bad for not believe Cole and was a little unsure of the diagnosis. The dr. spoke to all of my concerns and hesitations though and convinced me. Cole was excited! Until I told him that the pair of glasses he'd chosen (to look like Grandpa G) were too expensive and we'd have to go to Walmart the next week. It's so hard to wait for things!
The next Monday we went to Walmart for FHE (fun!) and were so happy to find a pair of glasses just like the ones Cole had already picked out! We were even happier to discover that they were going to cost only $48 (compared to $250 at the dr's office!). Cole didn't love the fact that he couldn't take the glasses home right away, but lucky us, they were done only two days later. We of course picked them up as soon as we possibly could and Cole had fun testing them out. At first. After about 10 minutes he decided that glasses aren't quite as cool as he thought and he told me that he'd probably wouldn't need them for much longer. He then spent the rest of the afternoon complaining about his glasses. It was a rough first day. It's been a week and he's now used to them, thank goodness!
After picking out Cole's glasses on Monday we decided to do a little shopping. We came across this kid mixer on the clearance aisle on sale for only $5! Maliya and Cole decided to pool their money together and buy it. They were SO excited about having their very own mixer that they could use in the REAL kitchen to make REAL food. They made a batch of red velvet cupcakes that night and had a blast. They actually liked the cupcakes too! (They seemed a little iffy to me ... no baking, just adding water to the mix and then refrigerating ... but the kids liked them.)
Last Wednesday I got to go into my dr. for a special ultrasound to make sure things were ok. Nick and the girls came with me and we found out that (a) the baby is a-ok (yay!!) and (b) the baby is a boy!!! Nick and I nearly cried tears of joy we were so excited. Our ultrasound tech was so sweet too. She's had hard experiences with pregnancy and was very understanding to what we've been through. She took the time to explain everything she saw and then played around a little with her 3D scanner. It was such a great morning!
We were on a high for the rest of the day. We went home and spent a lot of time looking through our baby name books, and then after school we all went out to look at baby room decor and to celebrate at Red Robin.
Pinterest success! Homemade scratch-and-win cards that worked!
We thought they were so cool that we made some to send to all of our cousins inside their surprise Valentine packages. (Hopefully theirs will work too!) Cole and Maliya wanted to put down prizes that they could give their cousins so we did things like 'a piece of gum' and '25¢'.
YW birthday presents - I love them! Luckily Nick rocks and was able to drill a hole into the top of this pineapple charm, since it only came with two tiny holes on the side. Weird, right? I was devastated when they came but Nick saved the day.
A month ago my YW class presidencies came over for a leadership retreat. One of our activities was a service project - busy boxes for the peds unit at St. Mary's. Last Saturday my kids and I finally delivered the boxes. The nurses there were so kind and grateful and we all left on a service high.
Maliya has been begging for jeans, mostly I think because she wants pants that require a belt. Last Saturday I finally took her shopping and we had a ball. We spent an hour at Target trying clothes and shoes on and found lots of great stuff! On Monday she was stoked to get to wear new jeans, a new jacket (it's reversible!), and new shoes.
