North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) offers the Motorcycle Basic Rider Course curriculum developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in Garner at the High School and in Hampton at the Middle School. The Basic Rider Course is the best introduction to motorcycling anywhere in the world. It will show you the skills and proper mental attitude you need to be a safe rider right from the start.
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF)-Basic Rider Course is a complete entry-level, learn-to-ride class that consists of at least 15 hours of formal classroom activities and on – cycle riding exercises conducted over two days. About 5 hours are devoted to learning activities in the classroom, and around 10 hours of hands-on-practice are included. Training motorcycles are provided. This is all accomplished during a two day Saturday and Sunday training as well as completing an MSF eCourse prior to the face-to-face class.
Valid driver’s license or driver’s permit is required. Iowa law requires any person under the age of 18 who wants a Class L license – valid for operation of a motorcycle – to successfully compete the motorcycle rider education course before a Class L license will be issued.
Classes this spring & summer at the Hampton Dumont Middle School are: April 30 – May 1; May 14 – 15; June 4 – 5 & July 16-17. Classes at Garner Hayfield Ventura High School are; May 7 – 8 or May 21 – 22. Sessions each day begin at 8 a.m. and finish at 5 p.m. The cost is $179.
