A survey conducted last month revealed that companies who offer free snacks to their employees have the happiest work environments.

The survey from online grocery-delivery company Peapod questioned 1,000 office employees questioned about their companies’ snack privileges, reports USA Today. Of those surveyed, 56% reported being either “extremely happy” or “very happy” with their employers. Among that percentile, 67% were offered free food as a company perk.

Among all age groups, millennials are the most likely to see free snacks as a very important job perk. Among the surveyed millennials, 66% agreed with the statement:

“If I found or was offered a job at another company with better perks, including availability of snacks, I would take it.”

The survey showed that of the 48% of people who were looking for a new employer, free snacks would positively influence their decision to accept a position at a company. The survey also found that 83% of snacking employees agreed to the statement:

“Having healthy and fresh snack options (e.g., fruit, vegetables, yogurt, low-calorie snacks) provided in the workplace is a huge perk.”

Ten years ago, the most popular item included soda, but now the top snacks, according to the most popular items sold by Peapod, are bananas, strawberries and apples.

While free snacks and food cannot ensure a productive and happy work environment, it can certainly help people come together. Beth Monaghan, co-founder of public relations firm InkHouse, said:

“It helps employees be more excited about coming to work.”
