We caught up with Redhead Photography team to learn more about what’s new with them and what parents can expect from them at the New York Baby Show!
For someone unfamiliar with Redhead Photography how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
Redhead Photography offers premiere, consistent, award-winning, newborn photography that is unsurpassed in terms of quality, and attention to detail. Our main focus are clients from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the surrounding boroughs. We specialize in newborn photography, but also offer photography for babies up to 1 year, as well as on location maternity photography, and underwater maternity photography, that go along with our newborn photography packages.
Our core values reside around simplicity. The focus of our photography is organic and timeless. We do not use heavy props, prop setups, and themes – we simply concentrate on the beauty of the baby (or momma to be). And we make sure our clients who want to work with us, are of the same mindset, since we do not alter our style, as we are known for our timeless simplicity.
What was the inspiration behind the company’s beginning? Was it a personal passion for you? How did the company evolve over time?
I have been a professional photographer for over 20 years now. It has always been – and will always be – a passion for me. Amongst working in Graphic Design in many well known design studios all over Manhattan, I taught as a Visiting and Adjunct Professor at a variety of colleges, and was the Department Chair at the Art Institute of NYC in Tribeca, prior to starting Redhead Photography. I used to photograph everything – weddings, events, pets, regular portraiture – and in 2005 upon the birth of my first child, my world changed. I had been blessed with a beautiful, red-haired, colic infant, with whom, as an only child who had never had exposure or training on how to handle babies, I had to learn how to soothe and calm for hours upon hours every day. For anyone who has ever had a colic newborn, they know exactly what I am talking bout when I say it is a life changing experience.
Due to this, and the countless number of hours I spent every single day, learning how to calm my own infant, I also signed up for continuing education programs to obtain a second graduate degree in photography. This was simply to use as an outlet – a release – to get ‘away’ from the incessant, unrelenting, crying that had usurped my life at that time.
I also became pregnant with another child by the time my first colic infant was 4 months old, and so for that first year of his life, started picking up my camera in a whole new way – photographing babies. By the time my daughter was born in December 2006, I had already incorporated Redhead Photography LLC (as I seemingly birthed another red haired child), and began ‘portfolio building’ with her as a newborn, learning how to calm, pose, and work with both babies and newborns alike.
By 2009 I began charging for my services, and having gotten quite adept at calming, soothing, and posing newborns, I became specialized as a newborn and baby photographer, and stopped taking any other clients other than newborns, babies, and maternity – which is how my business model shaped into what it is today. By 2011, I had my third child, and my newborn photography business took off to such a degree that I was booking out months in advance. I had started working with the New York Baby Show thereafter, and most of my clients traveled from the city to me, because of the meticulous detail and amazing consistent art I was able to produce.
By 2013, with the birth of my last child, I began averaging 3 – 6 newborns per week, not including baby and maternity sessions as well, and had the opportunity to be on live TV four times (CBS “The Couch”, FOX NEWS, MTV, and NY1). And in late 2015, had the opportunity to have Insider film both one of my newborn sessions (of which they developed 3 videos, obtaining over 9 million views individually within the first 36 hours of being aired, and being translated into at least 5 different languages that I’m aware of), and filmed me underwater with a maternity client, producing one underwater maternity video, as well.
What are the most popular and newest offerings from Redhead Photography?
The most popular offering we have is our “Grow With Me” packages, which incorporate our amazing 4 hour newborn sessions, as well as 3 more one-hour milestone sessions, incorporating baby’s first year of life. They have the option of either doing “Grow With Me Bellies” and “Grow With Me Underwater Bellies” which incorporates maternity sessions into their year long baby plan, or just the simple “Grow With Me” package which includes the newborn session, a 4 month session, an 8 month session, and a 12 month session (which can be either a regular session or a cake smash, client’s choice). The majority of our clients choose this option because, financially, it allows them to get photos of their baby’s milestones at a mere $300 per session including digital images, which is extremely cost competitive. However, the package has to be paid for – like all of our packages – upon booking, since they are widely discounted.
We also offer single newborn sessions in one of three categories – “Brand New”, which is our 3 hour newborn session focusing on baby alone, insuring a minimum of 7 poses, and variations of those poses, during that time period; “Brand New Family”, which is our 4 hour newborn session, where the first 3 hours focuses on baby alone the same as our regular newborn package, but where the 4th hour is devoted to mom & baby, dad & baby, mom, dad & baby, and/or sibling photographs (even fur sibling)! For those people on a restricted budget, we also offer a “Brand New Mini” session, which is a newborn mini-session, 1 hour in length, where the obtain 3 poses, and 10 high resolution digital images in both color and black and white. It allows people to get expert photography at a reduced cost, with the assurance that they are going to come home with stunning images, even if they are limited in quantity.
Lastly – one of our newest offerings is our underwater maternity sessions, which are offered in conjunction with our newborn sessions as a complete package. They can either be found as “Underwater Bellies & Babies” which is an underwater maternity session and a newborn session, or like stated above, “Grow With Me Underwater Bellies” which incorporates an underwater maternity session into their 1 year baby milestone plan. Underwater maternity sessions are one of the newest, and most unique experiences you can have with your baby to be. They are rarely done, as very few people across the world have mastered the art of such, as it requires expensive equipment, and expert skill to be able to capture images in this fashion. But, they are, in fact, one of a kind.
What makes Redhead Photography unique and different from other baby photography studios?
Consistency. And I’m not talking about just consistency with lighting and getting good photographs. I’m talking about consistency with posing. We guarantee that you will have a full newborn session (meaning a minimum of 7 poses – or 3 poses if it’s a mini), no matter what. We have seen well over a thousand newborn babies at this point and have had 100% success rate with every single baby that comes through our studio doors. We have two studios, which we highly recommend using because of the safety and sterility they offer your newborn baby.
All of our poses are identical, irregardless of what size, demographic, temperament, or age of your newborn baby. What you see is what you get – we do not get a ‘lucky shot’ – we always, always, have 100% success with every single baby we see. That is a very hard thing to promise, and to achieve, but with over 10 years now of experience with newborns, we can assure our clients this promise. Even in the face of technical difficulties, or a difficult baby, we still obtain a full session of images, and still are able to pose all babies we see, perfectly. We literally have it down to a science, which no other newborn photographer can dictate. (This is why we have been written up and been put on TV so many times, and why we have well known celebrity clientele that come to us to photograph their new babies!)
In 2015 we successfully photographed 221 newborn babies, inclusive of multiples. In 2014, that number was 203 successful newborn sessions. As usual we have a magnificent booth, and plenty of staff who represent our amazing studios!
