FEBRUARY 24, 1948: Jayalalithaa Was Born

She was born in Melukote town in Mysuru district as Komalavalli to Vedavalli and Jayaraman in an Tamil Brahmin family.

1961: Debut As Child Actress

She kicked started her acting career as child artist. Epistle was the first film she started shooting for and also the only English movie of her career.

1964: Debut As Lead Actress

She made debut as lead actress in Kannada film called ‘Chinnada Gombe’ (golden doll) at the age of 15. Debuts as lead actress in Tamil with ‘Vennira Aadai’ in 1965.

1965 : Co-Stars MGR

Jaya appeared opposite MG Ramachandran (MGR) in the year 1965. MGR was former Tamil Nadu chief minister and political mentor.

1970: Separation

In this year, Due to pressure from MGR’s party colleagues ,he started acting with other heroines and Jaya also started pairing up with other heroes.

This separation continued for around 10 years.

1977: MGR Became Chief Minister

MGR becomes Tamil Nadu’s chief minister for the first time.

1980: She Acted In Last Film Of Her Career

Acted in her last Tamil movie, Nadhiyai Thedi Vandha Kadal (Where ocean seeks a river), as the female lead. She has acted in 300 odd films by now.

1982: Entered Politics

Joined AIADMK party and also addressed her first public gathering in the same year in Cuddalore a town in northern Tamil Nadu. Her speech, titled Pennin Perumai (greatness of women), is a huge success.

1983: Appointed AIADMK’s Propaganda Secretary

Appointed as party’s propaganda secretary and campaigns for AIADMK in the Thiruchendur by-election.

1984: Becomes MP At Rajya Sabha

MGR sends her to Rajya Sabha where she serves till 1989.

In the end of this year, MGR suffered a stroke after which he was hospitalised in US.

According to reports, Jaya seizing the moment, approached then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and asked him to appoint her as CM citing MGR’s ill-health.

Rift between Jaya and MGR widen and she was stripped from several party posts.

In the same year, Jaya also faced two crucial elections- Lok Sabha and Legislative assemblies- both won by AIADMK with ease.

1987: MGR’s Died

In the year, MGR died and AIDMK broke into two factions after his death. Some followed MGR’s wife Janaki Ramachandran and the other supported Jayalalithaa.

1988: MGR’s Wife Became Tamil Nadu’s CM

Soon after MGR’s demise, his wife Janaki became Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minsiter with the support of 97 MLAs out of the 132 AIADMK MLAs. However, Her rule ended in 21 days, after Rajiv Gandhi dismisses her government.

And State came under president’s rule. A brief setback for Jayalalithaa.

1989: Major Set-Back For AIADMK

As AIADMK split into two fractions after the death of MGR party workers were unable to decide whom to vote or work for .

DMK won the polls with ease and the Jaya faction ends up with 27 seats, while Janaki faction ends up with only 2 seats. A few days after the elections, Janaki offered to quit the party clearing the path for Jaya’s accession to the throne.

MARCH 25, 1989: Unforgettable Day In Tamil Nadu Politics

There are several rumours and reports about what happened inside the assembly that day, But among all the most accepted version is here:

On that day Jayalalithaa was interrupting the then CM karunanidhi’s budget speech repeatedly by continuously repeating the word ‘criminal’. Krunanidhi was hurling cuss words at her, after which an AIADMK MLA lunged at him.

This has led to hustle bustle in the assembly and leaders started hitting each other. When Jaya was trying to exit the assembly, DMK minister Durai Murugan attempts to disrobe her. After which she was seen crying and telling media about the incident. She also swear to step inside the assembly again only as chief minister.

This incident bough unity in AIADMK supports to defeat the DMK government.

1991: Jaya Became Chief Minister Of Tamil Nadu

The elections bought a surprising victory for AIADMK-Congress alliance. The alliance won 225 seats were out of possible 234.

Whereas, DMK was humiliated, as they won only two seats.

Jayalalithaa finally become chief minister of Tamil Nadu for first time.

1992: An Unruly First Term

Jayalalitha landed in an controversy after throwing a lavish wedding for her adopted son Sudakaran, singing controversial land deals, mismanaging funds in granite quarrying lease, immunity scheme and colour television scheme, amassing assets disproportionate to her known source of income.

1996: Jaya Lost Chief Ministerial Seat

With the AIADMK winning only 4 seats, Jaya lost her assembly seat from Bargur, as Karunanidhi returns. She disowns Sasikala, her aide, after the loss.

DECEMBER 07, 1996: Jaya Arrested In Corruption Case

She got arrested in a corruption case and spent around a month in prison.

Around 48 cases of varying charges were filed against Jaya along with Sasikala, Sasikala’s family, several IAS officers and ministers.

1997: Started Battle Against Cases

With the start of this year until 2000, she concentrated fully on her defense for the cases against her.

In the row, Subramanian Swamy had also filed a case accusing her of having disproportionate assets worth Rs 66.65 crore.

She sometimes later, Gets acquitted in some cases but others continue to haunt.

2001: Second Coming

Riding on the mega alliance and DMK’s personal attacks on her, AIADMK made a comeback. The personal attacks on Jaya made her appear as a ‘vicitm’ of false cases which helped her alot.

This time, AIADMK and its partners win 196 seats, DMK front wins 36. While, Jaya herself didn’t contested in elections as she was barred by the Election Commission due to the pending 12 corruption cases.

Irrespective of this, her party appoints her as CM, but she could take charge as chief minister because of SC order. Meanwhile, O Paneerselvam warms the CM seat, awaiting her return.

2003: Jaya Back In Power Again

Ahead of Madras High Court cleared her on some counts, she was then allowed to contest elections.

An AIADMK MLA resigns and she wins from Andipatti, becomes CM again.

2006: Elections Again

This time DMK alliance outlasted AIADMK in the elections.

AIADMK alliance wins 69 seats, DMK alliance wins 163 seats.

2007: Opposition Leader

Jaya served as the leader of opposition until 2011.

2011: Jaya Becomes CM For Third Time

AIADMK alliance registers a massive win with 203 seats, while DMK alliance won over 31 seats only.

Jaya becomes CM for the third time.

2011: Sasikala Rift Widens

Jaya ousted her close aide Sasikala from AIADMK and her residence as well for the second time.  However, Sasikala was later writing an apology letter.

SEPTEMBER 27, 2014: Jaya Convicted By Court

Court convicted Jaya in the disproportionate assets case and sentences her to four years in prison with a Rs 100 crore fine.

With this O Paneerselvam again took charge in her place ‘temporarily’. Whereas, Jaya spent a month in prison and gets bail.

2015: Back With A Bang

Jaya made a massive comeback after returning from the prison.

2016:  AIADMK’s Consecutive Victory For First Time

AIADMK registered another remarkable victory. Jayalithaa was termed as chief minister for consecutive second time. It was for the first time in 32 years, when a chief minister was selected for consecutive second time.

AIADMK won 134 seats, while the DMK won 98 seats this time.

SEPTEMBER 22, 2016: Treatment in Apollo Hospital

According to reports, Jayalalithaa was being treated for fever and dehyderation in Chennai.

DECEMBER 04, 2016: Health Conditions Unstable

Jayalalithaa was taken to ICU again as she suffered a cardiac arrest.

DECEMBER 05, 2016: Jaya’s Health Conditions Critical

Jayalalithaa has been put on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a heart assist device, and was under the watch of experts, including cardiologists.

State Ministers including senior Minister P Thangamani, and other top AIADMK functionaries like B Valarmathi, who arrived at the hospital earlier, left for a brief while and returned.

December 05, 2016 (11:30pm): Amma passes away

Despite the prayers and wishes of innumerable people, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, 68-year-old charismatic leader, who was in Apollo Hospitals since September 22, died here at 11.30 p.m. on Monday.
