In a bizarre case of cockroach invasion a 42-year-old woman had a living cockroach inside her skull, which had burrowed up through her nose.
The woman living in Chennai woke up to a painful crawling sensation behind her eyes and rushed to a nearby clinic where they flushed her nose and sent her home.
Creepy crawly sensation did not subside, so the woman went to MN Shankar, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Chennai’s Stanley Medical College Hospital who explored her nasal passages with an endoscope and actually saw the cockroach moving.

“I saw some tiny legs moving inside. I looked further in and almost five centimetres from the tip of the nose I saw something unusual,” said Dr. Shankar to AFP.
“I realised I was actually looking at the bottom of a cockroach,” he added.
The cockroach had burrowed deep inside the Chennai woman’s nose, almost reaching the base of her skull and even 12 hours later, was still alive.

In a 45-minute procedure, Dr Shankar extracted the cockroach from her skull using an instrument similar to a vacuum cleaner, with the insect fully intact and still alive.
Dr Shankar said that the woman was doing “absolutely fine” and only “embarrassed she had a cockroach up her nose.”
“It was an out of the world kind of thing for her,” he said.
For Dr Shankar even, it was the first time he saw anything like this in his 30 years of medical practice.
