Auckland, New Zealand – 29 April, 2014 – MasterCard today announced the New Zealand launch of its ground-breaking digital payments technology MasterPassTM, which is available from today.

MasterPass is the digital platform from MasterCard that gives shoppers a seamless, secure and speedy checkout – regardless of where they may be and what device they may be using. MasterPass eliminates the need for consumers to enter detailed shipping and card information to complete their online shopping at MasterPass merchant sites.

Local partners live today with MasterPass include Westpac New Zealand, which will be the first bank to issue wallets in New Zealand, and payment technology providers Fontis, Flo2Cash, IP Payments, Payment Express, Paystation and Solutionists. Local retailers already accepting MasterPass include Webjet, BuyInvite, DC Shoes, Jeanswest, LivingSocial, NZSALE, Quiksilver and Roxy.

Additional partners working with MasterCard on MasterPass include ANZ, BNZ, and Kiwibank and those retail partners looking to implement include Book My Show, Briscoes, Event Cinemas, Fishpond, Live Nation, Living & Giving, Rebel Sport, Ticketmaster, plus many more.

Consumers can conveniently and securely store MasterCard and other branded credit, debit and prepaid card information, address books and more, removing the need to manually enter payment details as is necessary with most existing online payment systems. This simplifies the process of completing a transaction from any connected device, particularly those with smaller screens, and enables consumers to discover enhanced shopping experiences that are as simple as a click, tap or touch – online, in-store or anywhere.

“MasterPass is about providing consumers and businesses with convenience, accessibility and security,” said Peter Chisnall, MasterCard New Zealand Country Manager.

“New Zealand consumers are financially and technologically savvy, and there is a real appetite in the market for a safe and efficient way to make digital payments. MasterPass is a crucial step in the evolution from plastic cards to digital wallets.

“With MasterPass, consumers can safely do their grocery shopping on the bus on the way home from work, or make a last minute gift purchase during their lunch break, without the need to re-enter card and shipping details.”

Partners already signed up are excited about the opportunities this creates for their own business.

“Digital devices are giving customers more control over the transactional side of their banking and more ability to self-serve at a time and place that suits them,” said Shane Howell, Westpac Chief Product Officer.

“MasterPass is an extension of this and we expect it will quickly become very popular with our customers. We’re very excited Westpac can be the first New Zealand bank to offer MasterPass and expect this to translate to a more secure and seamless online experience.”

David Galt, CEO, Webjet Australia & New Zealand says as a leading online travel agency, Webjet is committed to empowering customers with greater travel choice and convenience.

“The addition of MasterPass enhances our website on both of these fronts.  MasterPass is simple and convenient across devices, and is a choice in payment options we believe customers will value.”

Currently over 40,000 merchants around the world accept the option to make online payments with MasterPass. MasterPass-enabled merchants include Zuji, Singapore Airlines, J. Crew, Rakuten, Kate Spade, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Boots UK, Bass Pro Shops and Beyond the Rack. A full list of New Zealand merchants can be found at: http://shopnow.masterpass.com/en-nz
