As America’s best-selling crossover SUV, the Honda CR-V didn’t necessarily need any major changes for the 2015 model year, but Honda wants to make sure that its popular utility vehicle stays on top of its competitive segment for years to come. Revealed on Sept. 30 and on sale as of Oct. 1, the 2015 Honda CR-V features far more than the minor tweaks that are typically associated with a car’s mid-cycle refresh, instead boasting major improvements in style, fuel economy and safety.

With a revamped grille, slimmer headlights and a new chrome strip that runs below its tailgate window, the 2015 CR-V sports an updated design that is not only bolder, but also more sophisticated. Underneath the sheet metal, the compact SUV’s DOHC i-VTEC four-cylinder engine has been heavily revised to produce an extra 18 pound-feet of torque, while an efficient new continuously variable transmission (CVT) helps boost standard highway fuel economy to 34 mpg, an increase of three miles per gallon compared to the 2014 CR-V. Drivers will also benefit from a smoother ride thanks to the revised tuning of the front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspension systems.

“The significant changes for the 2015 model year will create some extra distance between the CR-V and its competitors as other automakers keep trying to replicate Honda’s success in the compact-SUV segment,” said Jason LaCroix, general manager of AutoFair Honda, a Honda dealer in Manchester, N.H. “In addition to making the 2015 CR-V more stylish and more fuel efficient, Honda engineers also kept safety top of mind by integrating new driver-assist technologies into the SUV.”

Newly available in the CR-V for the 2015 model year, the Honda Sensing suite includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Honda LaneWatch, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist and a Collision Mitigation Braking System. Elsewhere inside the cabin, the 2015 Honda CR-V now comes standard with a center console armrest, sliding sunvisors and rear console ventilation ducts. Buyers can also opt for new features like LED daytime running lights, a power tailgate, a seven-inch Display Audio touchscreen and a 10-way power and heated driver’s seat with memory.
