TOWSON, Md. - Northwest Missouri State University senior quarterback Trevor Adamsleads the Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II football team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A biology/psychology double major with a 3.94 G.P.A., Adams is the winner of the Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division II football.
The Capital One Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2013-14 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
Adams and his Northwest Missouri State Bearcats are 12-0 overall and play St. CloudState University in the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals Saturday. He is a three-time Capital One Academic All-America® selection, earning second team honors in 2011 and 2012. This year, Adams is the top-rated Division II passer in pass efficiency rating (192.3) and completion percentage (72.7).
The 2013 Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Offensive Player of the Year, Adams will graduate in December with his double major. He has served as the Bearcats’ starting quarterback since the third week of his sophomore season. This year, the Odessa, Texas, native has completed 160-of-220 passes for 2,292 yards and 25 touchdowns. Northwest Missouri State is 31-6 overall since Adams was inserted into the starting lineup.
Sixteen members of the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II football 24-member first team have at least a 3.79 G.P.A., with two players sporting a perfect 4.00 GPA. The 24 members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.80.
The 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II football first team features five repeat selections to the first team. Senior wide receiver Nathan Slaughterof West Texas A&M University, senior running back Glen Clinton of Chadron State College, senior running back Klay Fiechter of the University of Indianapolis, senior placekicker Sam Brockshus of Minnesota State Mankato and senior defensive lineman Chris Schaudt of Minnesota State University Mankato earned first team honors for the second year in a row.
Six student-athletes moved from the 2012 second team to the 2013 first team. In addition to Adams, this list includes senior wide receiver Ben DeCelle of the Universityof North Carolina at Pembroke, graduate student defensive back John McSheffery of West Texas A&M, graduate student linebacker Chad McGraw of Colorado School of Mines, senior defensive lineman Robert Hayes of Shepherd University and senior defensive lineman Tyler Reidl of Quincy (Ill.) University.
Twelve members of the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II football first team and 11 members of the 25-member second team represent squads which qualified for the NCAA Division II Football Championship. Entering Saturday’s national quarterfinals, eight Academic All-America® student-athletes are still active in the playoffs. They include Adams and junior linebacker Eric Reimer of NorthwestMissouri State, Slaughter, McSheffery and senior quarterback Dustin Vaughan of West Texas A&M, Hayes of Shepherd, sophomore offensive lineman Connor Gould ofGrand Valley State University and junior defensive back Joe Anderson of Lenoir-RhyneUniversity. Reimer, Vaughan, Gould and Anderson are Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II football second team honorees.
Chadron State and Minnesota State Mankato top the charts with four honorees each (both schools have two first teamers and two second teamers each). Indianapolis and West Texas A&M are next with three selections (both schools have two first teamers and one second teamer each). Five schools have two picks each, led by Colorado Mines and UNC Pembroke. Both the Orediggers and the Braves had two first team student-athletes each.
A mass communications major with a 3.66 G.P.A., Slaughter has two kick returns for touchdowns this season (100 and 95 yards) for West Texas A&M. He leads the nation in kick returns at 40.3 yards per return. Slaughter has 1234 all-purpose yards this season, second-best on the team with his 94.9 yards per game average. West Texas A&M (11-2 overall) visits Grand Valley State in the national quarterfinals Saturday.
Both first team running backs are returning Capital One Academic All-America® first teamers. A senior from Cody, Wyo., Clinton has a 3.60 GPA in biology. The ChadronState standout has rushed for 1518 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. Clinton was a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy. Fiechter helped Indianapolis qualify for the NCAA playoffs. He became Indianapolis’ all-time leading rusher this season. He is 18th in Division II in all-purpose yardage (166.2 yards per game), while ranking sixth in punt return average (17.1 yards per return). Fiechter possesses a 3.69 G.P.A. in exercise science and pre-physical therapy.
Spencer, Iowa native Sam Brockshus holds a 3.61 G.P.A. as a civil engineering major at Minnesota State Mankato. Brockshus finished his senior season with a total of 108 points as he connected on 14-of-18 field goal attempts and 66-of-68 extra point attempts. He was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after recording four field goals against Concordia-St. Paul. Brockshus was named to the All-NSIC South Division first team all-conference squad.
Brockshus’ teammate Chris Schadut was also a first team All-NSIC South Division pick as a defensive lineman. He tallied 45 tackles, leading the team in tackles for loss with 11. He also notched 6.5 sacks on the season for a loss of 43 yards. As a member of the defensive line, Schaudt helped hold opposing offenses to only 893 rushing yards this season. A native of Slater, Iowa, Schaudt has a 3.69 G.P.A. as a finance major.
UNC Pembroke senior Ben DeCelle joins Slaughter as a first team wide receiver. A Rockwell, N.C. product who maintains a 3.96 G.P.A. as a political science major, DeCelle has hauled in a career-best 58 catches for 498 yards and two touchdowns this season. He has (twice) matched the school’s single-game record for receptions with 10 against both Fayetteville State University (110 yards) and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (80).
A native of Sulphur Springs, Texas, McSheffery is one of four first team defensive backs. He has played and started 11 of 11 games at defensive back and holds for the WTAMU and Lone Star Conference career scoring leader kicker Sergio Castillo. McSheffery has 23 solo tackles and 11 assisted stops this season. He is attending graduate school with a 4.00 G.P.A. after graduating last December with a 3.94 G.P.A. in his sports and exercise science major.
Colorado Mines graduate student Chad McGraw is one of four first team linebackers. In 2012, the Castle Rock, Colo., native led NCAA Division II in forced fumbles with eight. A 2013 graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering (3.71 G.P.A.), McGraw is currently a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in engineering technology management.
On the field, McGraw is an All-Rocky Mountain Athletics Conference selection. He is fourth on the team with 73 tackles (37 solo) and first in tackles for loss with 15 for a loss of 62 yards. He also tops the team charts with 4.5 sacks on the season, while adding six pass break ups and six passes defended this year as a starter at outside linebacker.
Shepherd’s Hayes and Quincy’s Reidl join Mankato’s Schaudt to comprise 75 percent of the Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II first team defensive line. ASterling, Va., native, Hayes has recorded 18 tackles (15 solo) with team-bests of 11 tackles for loss and 10 sacks through 11 games this year. Hayes boasts a 3.44 G.P.A. as a fitness and exercise science major. Shepherd (11-0 overall) hosts West Chester University in a national quarterfinal Saturday.
Reidl ranks sixth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with his 6.5 sacks; he is 10th with 10 tackles for loss. Reidl leads the QU defensive line with 31 tackles and leads the conference with three forced fumbles. The senior from Franklin Grove, Ill. is a biological sciences and chemistry major and carries a 3.84 G.P.A.
A junior from Littleton, Colo., Mines junior Court Pietra is the Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II first team tight end. He is 10th on the team with 10 receptions for 107 yards. Pietra has played in eight games this season with five starts to his credit. He currently holds a 3.89 G.P.A. while studying mechanical engineering.
Three of the five Capital One Academic All-America® first team offensive linemen helped their respective teams earn a berth in the NCAA Division II postseason. UNC Pembroke senior Wes Carter, Henderson State University senior Kelton Hays andUniversity of Minnesota Duluth junior Andrew Pattock helped their clubs make the NCAA playoffs this year.
Carter holds a 3.79 G.P.A. as a biology major. A three-year starter, Carter has graded out near 90 percent over 10 starts for the Braves this season. During his time as a starter, UNCP has compiled a 23-9 overall record. Carter hails from Albemarle, N.C.
Hays is one of eight finalists for the 2013 Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award. The award is sponsored by the Manheim Touchdown Club and voted upon by the NCAA Division II sports information directors. In the classroom, Hays has a 3.64 G.P.A. with a finance major.
Hays was ranked as one of the top 10 centers in the country by D2football.com to begin the year.
The senior from Jonesville, La., anchored an offensive unit which leads the nation in scoring (53.3 points per game), total offense (576.4 yards per game) and passing offense (428.4 yards per game). He was a third team All-American (Don Hansen) in 2012.
Pattock maintains a 3.98 G.P.A. as a biochemical and molecular biology major. He made UMD’s Athletic Academic Scholar List for compiling the best GPA of any football Bulldog during both the 2011-12 (3.94) and 2012-13 (a perfect 4.00) school years. He played in eight of UMD’s 13 games, including five as a starter for the Bulldogs.
Completing the offensive line are senior Mike Felker of Clarion University and seniorKyle Wallace of Urbana University. Felker is a two-year team captain for the Golden Eagles. He has started all 44 games during his career, including 11 this season at left tackle. Felker is a three-time All-PSAC West selection (2013, 2012 and 2010). The Gibsonia, Pa., native has a 3.84 G.P.A. and is majoring in economics and finance.
Wallace (West Milton, Ohio/Milton-Union HS) anchored the offensive line for the nation’s 18th ranked passing offense at Urbana (303.3 yards per game). He ended his career with 32 straight starts at center. Wallace was named second team All-Mountain East Conference this season. The accolade was his third career all-conference award. He holds a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. as a biology and pre-physical therapy major. Wallace is the first NCAA Division II First Team Academic All-American® in Urbana University history. His former teammate, linebacker Drew Underwood, earned Second Team honors a year ago. Wallace and Underwood are the only NCAA Division II Academic All-Americans in school history. The Blue Knight football program landed 13 players on the NAIA’s National Scholar Athlete Team from 1985-2007, including current UU Head Coach David Taynor.
McSheffery’s Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II first team defensive backfield mates are junior Colin Kimball of Mercyhurst University, seniorPierre Etchemendy of Chadron State and junior Koby Orris of Indianapolis.
Kimball finished second on the Mercyhurst charts with 57 total tackles, including 40 solo stops. He picked off a team-high six passes, including two he returned for a touchdown. His interception total currently ranks ninth in the nation. Kimball also led the Lakers with 10 passes defended and contributed three tackles for a loss and a forced fumble. The junior from Erie, Pa., holds a 3.95 G.P.A. in graphic design.
Etchemendy tallied 61 tackles for Chadron State in 2013, ranking him fifth on the team. He added four tackles for loss and one interception in 11 games played for the 8-3 Eagles. He recorded seven tackles or more on four occasions, including a season-high 14 stops in the Eagles’ season opener against Missouri University of Science and Technology. A senior from Douglas, Wyo., Etchemendy is a rangeland management major with a 3.85 G.P.A.
Orris helped the Hounds reach the NCAA playoffs this year. The two-year starter at safety has four interceptions this season. He has 101 yards on has interception returns, including a 68-yarder for a touchdown at McKendree University. Orris has 47 tackles and two forced fumbles. He maintains a 3.89 G.P.A. in exercise science and pre-physical therapy.
Joining McGraw as the Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II first team linebackers are senior Jake Edmiston of Colorado Mesa University and junior Tyler Zimmer of Seton Hill University. Edmiston is the RMAC Academic Player of the Year. The Palisade, Colo. native has a 3.82 G.P.A. in secondary education (mathematics and statistics). He leads Division II in tackles with 16.1 per game.
This season, Zimmer led the Griffins with 93 total tackles, including 57 solo stops. He has also added 10 tackles for loss, a team-high six sacks, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions. Zimmer totaled a season-high 15 tackles and two sacks against Slippery Rock. A junior from Harrison City, Pa., he carries a 3.90 G.P.A. in elementary education (pre-K) with a focus on special education. Last season, Zimmer was named first team Daktronics All-American, the first Seton Hill player to be so honored.
University of Mary senior defensive lineman John Oyloe joins Shepherd’s Hayes andQuincy’s Reidl to complete the Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II first team defensive line. Oyloe totaled 54 tackles this season to rank fifth on the Marauders’ team. He piled up 10 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. Oyloe registered a sack in seven of the 10 games this season; he is the school’s all-time leader in tackles for loss and second in total sacks. A native of Williston, N.D., he currently has a 3.85 G.P.A. in business management.
Senior punter Cody Crosby of Gannon University completes the Capital One Academic All-America® first team. Crosby averaged 39.8 yards as Gannon’s rugby-style punter this season. Crosby has placed nearly half of his punts inside the 20-yard line. He booted a season-best 55-yard punt during a 38-27 victory against nationally-ranked Slippery Rock University. Crosby has averaged 34.5 yards on 24 punts during his collegiate career.
