TEDxUAL 2016 has released its talks online.
The independently-organised event, licensed by TED, brought together UAL students, staff and other local voices to question, what is the State of the Art?
Talks ranged from living with HIV, working in an art collective, the future of education in augmented reality, the power of typography, and more!
“I’m excited about releasing these talks to the UAL community,” said TEDxUAL Organiser and UAL student, Ellie Armstrong. “The first time my history teacher showed me a TED talk aged 16, I knew this was the kind of thing I wanted to do. From the moment I found out that TED allowed people to apply for TEDx licenses to host a small, 100 attendee event, I wanted to be involved in making it happen in the UAL community. I believe that our TEDxUAL talks will create a network of people, who I hope go on to innovate through new and exciting collaborations within UAL.”
TEDx is program of locally organised events that bring the community together to share a TED-like experience. Some of the best talks from TEDx events have gone on to be featured on TED.com and garnered millions of views from audiences across the globe.
TEDxUAL 2016 speakers
Jacob Alexander: A student of Creative Direction for Fashion at London College of Fashion, UAL – Jacob talks about the moment he was diagnosed as HIV positive. He launches The Positive Project, designed to raise awareness, combat HIV stigma and change the lives of those living with the virus.

Lemon People: A collective of young artists, who worked as Artists in Residence for TEDxUAL, responsible for the set design and projections featured on the day of the event. They give a talk on the State of the Art in the contemporary art scene in London.

Conrad Shawcross: A British artist, youngest living member of the Royal Academy, explores science and philosophy through his sculptures and combination of art to science in the cloaking of objects.
Gavin Freeborn: Part of Chelsea College of Arts, UAL marketing team, Gavin presents his dynamic project ‘The Freeborn Exchange’, where he uses his photographic skills in exchange to travel, live and thrive in society.
Dr. Nadine Chahine: A Lebanese type designer and Arabic Specialist whose research focuses, in collaboration with the MIT, on legibility and politics of studies in Arabic, Latin and Chinese.
Skye Lourie: A young British actress, talks about her personal experience of what is State of the Art, and her perspective on being an actress.
Dr. Angela Breitenbach: A lecturer and researcher of Philosophy on the aesthetic judgements of the ideal of Unity and Beauty in science at the University of Cambridge.
Colum Elliott-Kelly: Colum’s creates tools for digital devices to deliver individually tailored information for museums and other cultural institutions for an interactive learning environment.
Helene Steiner: London based designer and researcher, focuses her research on looking for opportunities to not only bridge the physical and digital world, but also the natural and artificial, creating a dialogue between the two.
Andrew Stockman: Andrew is a lecturer and researcher in the neuroscience of colour vision in the use of art, at the University College of London within the Institute of Ophthalmology in Moorfield’s Eye Hospital. Andrew explains how our eyes actually experience colour and how easily they can be tricked!
Bee Tajudeen: Education Officer at Students Union University of the Arts London, talks about cultural diversity in the creative industries and her work in Black Blossoms and Shades of Noir.
Toby Young: A composer from London, who works across classical and contemporary music, from the LSO to Chase and Status, explores a comparison of the differences between popular and classical music and possible future directions of opera.
About TEDx, x = independently organised event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organised TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
