Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office
Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill is charged with a misdemeanor for the shooting of 43-year-old Gwenevere McCord on Sunday.
The Georgia sheriff who shot and critically injured a real estate agent in a “heartbreaking accident” 50 miles from his office was arrested Wednesday night.
Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill, 50, was charged with reckless conduct, a misdemeanor, and released by Gwinnett County police 35 minutes later after posting a $ 2,950 bond, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Police said Hill declined to give them an account of what happened in the Lawrenceville, Ga. model home where 43-year-old Gwenevere McCord, still clinging to life in an area hospital, was shot in the abdomen on Sunday.
The sheriff did release a public statement one day earlier.
“As reported, on May 3, 2015, I was involved in a tragic and heartbreaking accident,” Hill said in a statement Tuesday. “Gwenevere McCord, who is very dear to me, was critically injured in this accident. Please understand that for the past 48 hours, I have been entirely focused on Gwenevere and her family. I will continue to pray unceasingly for her recovery. I ask you all to please pray for Gwenevere and her family throughout this most difficult time.”
Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said he has fundamental questions about Hill’s account, which was that he was conducting “police training exercises” inside the home when he accidentally shot McCord.
The location of the house is well outside his jurisdiction.

Gwenevere McCord, 43, was critically shot by Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill, authorities say.
Ernest McCord, the victim’s father, called the shooting a “freak accident.” But his daughter, a real estate agent for Atlanta-based Paran Realty, has yet to be able to speak with investigators, according to AJC.
Hill handed over his cell phone, two guns and clothing he was wearing at the time of the shooting to investigators at the scene, Porter said.
His stint as sheriff in the county south of Atlanta has been filled with controversy. On his first day a decade ago, Hill fired more than two dozen deputies. He also used a military tank on drug raids as part of a tough-on-crime message.

He was voted out of office in 2008, but won it back again in 2012 despite facing more than two dozen criminal charges in a corruption case. A jury later acquitted him of all 27 charges, including theft and giving false statements. That cleared the way for Hill to continue as sheriff.
