The Cowboys are still trying to decide what the future of Tony Romo will be and the recent news doesn’t put any light on the subject.

The Dallas Cowboys hit gold in the fourth-round when they selected a quarterback out of Mississippi State name Dak Prescott.  The bad news is that they also have a franchise and fan favorite quarterback named Tony Romo there as well.  No matter what Jerry Jones and this Cowboys organization does, they will make a fan base upset.  You have the group that loves Romo and doesn’t want to see him leave, but you also have a fan base that either is not a Romo fan, or just want the best for the Cowboys.  That best thing is the younger quarterback continuing his growth as the Cowboys starting quarterback now and in the future.

We recently heard about Romo saying that he is expecting the Cowboys to releases the veteran quarterback, allowing him to sign with the team of his choice.  This also shows that his current contract is not a contract that can be moved via a trade.  We are now hearing via Pro Football Rumors that Romo is up to discussing the possibility of working with his contract to help his team make a trade and get something in return.

The best-case scenario for Romo would to be strictly released, this would allow him to sign with the team of his choice.  The fact that he is willing to work with his contract proves what kind of team player he is and how lucky anyone would be to grab him in a trade.  He is willing to try and get the most out of his possible former team to best that organization as he gets ready to help another organization in 2017.

With Romo carrying a league-high of $24.7 million cap figure, it will be very tough for the Cowboys and Romo to work on a friendly contract that a new team is willing to pay for a couple years of service.  Throw in the fact that the rest of the league knows that Romo is not in the Cowboys future plans and there is close to a zero percent chance that Dallas will be willing to spend starter money on a backup quarterback.  Dallas is ready to contend now, but has a few needs on defense to put them over the top, the money they would save with Romo is more than enough to get that player or two on defense.

Some call it renting a player for a championship, like the Denver Broncos did recently with Peyton Manning, but I would call it a smart move to bring in a veteran play caller like Romo that has a good two or three years left in that tank.  Romo would bring a veteran leadership to a team that is just one piece away from becoming a contender.  Three teams have been linked to Romo and all three teams have the same thing in common.  Denver, Kansas City, and Houston all have a championship worthy defense, along with multiple pieces on offense.  However, all three teams are missing the key piece, the quarterback to guide the team.  With Romo, they will become instant contenders, if not the favorites to make it to Super Bowl 52 out of the AFC.

Imagine a Super Bowl that features the Dallas Cowboys against the quarterback that had led them for the past decade.  It would be a fantastic two weeks of headlines leading up to the big game!
