Campus Spotlight:

UTEP to be Featured in National Radio Documentary

Just 20 percent of college-goers fit the stereotype of being young, single, full-time students who finish a degree in four years. College students today are more likely to be older, part-time, working, and low-income than they were three decades ago. Many are the first in their families to go to college.

A documentary produced by American RadioWorks will air at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5 on KTEP-FM (88.5) that explores how universities are adapting to serve these new students. It explains changing demographics and what colleges must do to remain engines of social mobility. The last third of the documentary is focused on The University of Texas at El Paso. You can listen online at ktep.org.

American RadioWorks is the national documentary unit of American Public Media. ARW creates documentaries, series projects, podcasts and online content for the public radio system and the Internet.

Conference to Showcase Latest in Teaching Technology

The latest in classroom technology will be discussed and demonstrated by experts in the field during the annual Academic Technologies Summit from noon to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in UTEP’s Undergraduate Learning Center.

The summit brings together educators, experts and sponsors in higher education from across the country to engage in interactive sessions that explore and expand the use of technology in teaching and learning.

This year’s conference will feature keynote presentations from Cable Green, Ph.D., director of global learning for Creative Commons, and Michael Mills, Ed.D., assistant professor of teaching and learning, and a Distinguished Apple Educator, from the University of Central Arkansas.

Other presentations will be made by representatives from Purdue, Wayne State, Old Dominion and New Mexico State universities, and several University of Texas campuses including UTEP, to name a few. They will address and reveal how faculty, students and staff can integrate cutting-edge technology into their teaching and learning.

A light lunch and dinner will be provided. Door prizes will be awarded during the dinner. The cost to attend is $25, but graduate students will get in free.

UTEP Conference To Help New Teachers Align Curriculum

An expert in the field of children’s literature will discuss how Pre-K-16 educators can work together to build a cohesive curriculum that will lead to student success during the 10th annual A Better Beginning Conference from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, at UTEP.

Sylvia Vardell, Ph.D., professor in the School of Library and Information Studies at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, will be this year’s keynote speaker. “Success through Curriculum Alignment” is the theme of this year’s event and will be conducted in several rooms in Union Building East.

Participants also can attend a handful of breakout sessions where experts from local districts and UTEP faculty will provide guidance, support and models of how to align curriculum to the state standards to ensure student success.

The conference’s goals are to help novice teachers (those with less than three years of experience), mentor teachers and administrators learn and hone the necessary skills for success in the classroom. Statistics show this kind of support keeps excellent teachers in the schools, which plays a vital role in creating a positive learning environment among students, especially those in at-risk sub-groups.

Teachers are encouraged to attend and RSVP to the free event. For more information about the ABC Conference, which was organized by UTEP’s College of Education, please visit www.utep.edu/abcconference or call 915-747-5572 or 915-747-5783.

Business Announcements:

•           Professor of Mechanical Engineering Roger V. Gonzalez, Ph.D., was one of six honorees at this year’s 15th Annual McDonald’s Hispanos Triunfadores. The event celebrates the achievements of local Hispanic leaders and their philanthropic contributions to the community. Honorees also are recognized for their good moral character and for serving as positive role models.

Gonzalez, who grew up in El Paso, is the president and founder of LIMBS International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing ultra low-cost prosthetics for the “poorest of the poor” around the world. Since its inception in 2003, the organization has impacted countries including Bolivia, Kenya, Senegal, Bangladesh and Haiti.

Richard Castro, president of the El Paso-Las Cruces McDonald’s Co-Op, said, “McDonald’s Hispanos Triunfadores has been recognizing Hispanic successes for the last 15 years. Dr. Roger Gonzalez is an outstanding honoree for his humanitarian efforts by improving the lives of those in need.”

•           UTEP Director of Chicano Studies Dennis Bixler-Márquez, Ph.D., was the recipient of the first-ever award for outstanding contributions in the discipline at the Texas LULAC District IV 2014 Hall of Fame Banquet.

The event, held Saturday, Sept. 27, also recognized achievements by local LULAC councils, acknowledged past inductees into the organization’s Hall of Fame, and celebrated new inductees.

LULAC is the largest and oldest Hispanic membership organization in the United States. It advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating through more than 1,000 LULAC councils nationwide. There are 10 councils in the El Paso area alone and approximately 300 councils in Texas.
