A group of dog lovers in northern China crashed a car into a lorry carrying 320 dogs, likely to their slaughter, in a dangerous rescue attempt that highlights growing activism to protect animals. Frustrated by the lack of police action, as China lacks a law that protects animals, activists are increasingly taking matters into their own hands. In particular they target the trafficking of dogs, mostly strays and stolen family pets, which are sold for their meat.

The US-based Humane Society International estimates that up to 20 million dogs in China are killed and eaten each year.
