“FAT 8S” MOUNTAIN BIKE TIME TRIAL RACE PEAK Mountain Sports at 865-804-4902 6 p.m. at Haw Ridge Park Even though we really like to run, PEAK Mountain Sports was created for the whole local trail based community, and after 3 years, we figure it’s about time to show some love to the two wheeled trail community. We are super excited to be bringing you the first “Fat 8s” Mountain Bike Time Trial Race, which will be an approximately 8 mile MTB Time Trial with an $8 entry fee just enough for us to cover insurance/license costs. Also like our other events, we will have a donation jar available for a local trail based organization in our community. Our event donation approach has generated nearly $4000.00 over the last 3 years for local organizations such as AMBC, Friends of Haw Ridge and the Legacy Parks Foundation. HANDS-ON BIKE MAINTENANCE: WHEEL TRUING REI at 865-584-1938 6 p.m. at REI Knoxville The wheel is a crucial part of the bike that requires specific care and maintenance. Over time, the rim, spokes, and nipples can become worn and/or damaged and the wheel can become fatigued; requiring repair or replacement to return it to optimal performance. Join our certified bike technicians to learn proper maintenance and adjustment you can make to keep your wheels and the component parts in good condition. BYOB Bring Your Own Bike. Bikes must be clean and in good working order to be used during the class. If your bike does not meet standards you may still attend the clinic. However, you may be asked not to work on your bike. HIKE BIG CREEK AREA RCS Hiking Club 9 a.m. at Gatlinburg City Hall Park & Ride On this Good Friday, we’ll hike in the Big Creek area to try and avoid crowds. A moderate to strenuous 6 miles will start on Chestnut Branch Trail to the AT and Davenport Gap. From there you can opt to hike back to the ranger station on the gravel road or continue on the AT outside the Park boundary to the Pigeon River. There will be a shuttle for those going to the Pigeon River. DAYHIKE: LAUREL FALLS AND COVE MOUNTAIN TRAILS, GSMNP Harvey Broome Group of the Sierra Club TBA: Must pre-register with Conrad Ottenfeld at co11505@charter.net for meeting location and time This will be a shuttle hike including the Laurel Falls and Cove Mountain Trails. We will meet at Sugarlands Visitor Center at 8 a.m. and shuttle to the Laurel Falls Trail trailhead. This 12.4-mile hike will climb about 1,700 feet up the Laurel Falls Trail in the first 4 miles, making this a difficult hike. From the Cove Mountain Trail junction, we will begin our descent back to the Sugarland Visitor Center. RESURRECTION RUN 5K AND FUN WALK Angela Atkinson 8:30 a.m. at Sandy Springs Park Family-oriented 5K and 1 Mile fun walk to support Family Promise of Blount Co. 58 placement awards, doorprizes, food and lots of fun. This is a circular course running through the historic Maryville residential area with a fast downhill finish. OLD CITY DISC GOLF OPEN Knoxville Disc Golf Association 9 a.m. at Morningside Park PDGA Pro & Am C-Tier Tournament; 2 rounds of 18 holes. OBED RIVER CLEANUP 3 Rivers Angler at 865-200-5271 9 a.m. at Obed Wild & Scenic River We will be hosting a river-based cleanup of the section of the Obed River between the Devil’s Breakfast Table and Nemo. This 11-mile section of stream is one of the most dramatic in the entire park, featuring towering cliffs and a sense of remoteness rarely found in today’s world. Experienced whitewater paddlers are welcome to join in the cleanup but must provide their own whitewater boat, personal floatation device, helmet and appropriate river attire. Paddlers should be highly proficient in Class III/IV whitewater. Individuals wishing to assist with the cleanup should meet at the Obed Wild and Scenic River Visitor Center, 208 N. Maiden St. in Wartburg, at 9 a.m. Participants should be prepared to use their own vehicles to set the shuttle at the take-out point at Nemo and to drive to the put-in location at the Devil’s Breakfast Table. The trip is subject to cancellation due to weather and river levels.

HIKE THE SMOKIES #SCC100 SERIES Little River Trading Company at 865-681-4141 9 a.m. at Little River Trading Company This is one of our very favorite trails in the Smokies. The trail is an out and back that follows the Middle Prong on an old railroad bed. Meet at the shop at 9 a.m. to carpool to the trailhead for the hike. We’ll have Leki Trekking poles and daypaks from Osprey & Deuter available to demo on a first come first serve basis. Stay tuned for additional date and trails.

BLUE HERON LOOP CENTENNIAL CHALLENGE HEALTHY HIKE Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area at 423-286-7275 10 a.m. at Big South Fork NRRA, Bandy Creek Campground Join Ranger Mary Grimm at the Blue Heron Overlook parking lot at the end of Overlook Road just off Kentucky 742 for a moderate 6.4 mile hike. This all day hike is packed with cultural history about the Blue Heron Mine and community, a climb through “Cracks-in-the-Rocks,” scenic views of Big South Fork River gorge and Devils Jump rapid, the tranquil sound of hiking along the river bottom, as well as possible sneak peaks at early spring wildflowers! Wear weather appropriate clothing and bring water, snacks, and lunch. Hikers are encouraged to bring well-behaved dogs; however, leashes are required.

SPRING WILDFLOWER WALKS AT NORRIS DAM STATE PARK Norris Dam State Park at 865-426-7461 10 a.m.; 1 p.m.; and 2 p.m.; Norris Dam State Park various trailheads For those of you who are botanists, photographers, hikers, or simply have cabin fever come out and view nature’s pink, orange, yellow, and purple wildflowers. River Bluff Trail boasts approximately 30 different species of wildflowers! Park rangers, botanists, and wildflower enthusiasts lead wildflower hikes on the last Saturday of March and the first Saturday of April. Join State Park and TVA staff for guided hikes along the cool Clinch River, one of the most diverse pathways of wildflower concentrations in the region. Hikes will begin at at the Lower Creek trailhead, located at the Rice’s Gristmill. Registration is not required and there is no charge for the hikes. In this in-store class you’ll learn the parts of a compass, how to read a topographic map and how to use them in tandem. She will focus on learning how to confidently navigate. She will also be teaching some basic survival skills in case your adventure takes an unexpected turn. Group 2 will be hosted by Jon and Shawn, and will cover suspension adjustments, and tips and tricks for better cockpit controls setup. Covenant Health will offer a limited edition patch for anyone who logs 25 miles on Dogwood Trails between April 1 and May 31.

DAYHIKE – RAMSAY CASCADES, GSMNP Harvey Broome Group of the Sierra Club TBA: Must pre-register with Mac Post at mpost3116@aol.com for meeting location and time Biodiversity Tour (Cove Hardwoods). You have only to take this hike once to understand why it’s one of the most popular. The falls are ample reward not only for the hiker, but the artist and photographer as well. The 8 mile round trip starts out with a slight upgrade in the beginning, then becomes more challenging as you near the cascades. The latter portion of the trail is where you will find the old growth trees some of which measure in record proportions. We will see many spring wildflowers in bloom along the way. Rated moderate.

2016 OVER-COMER OBSTACLE CHALLENGE RACE Cease Inc. at 423-581-7029 8 a.m. at Frank Loreno Park in Morristown This event is a 3-plus mile endurance race with 21 obstacles designed to test the body, mind and spirit of participants regardless of fitness and experience level. Over-comers will run, climb, jump, crawl, and muscle their way through to conquer the obstacles along the way similar to the journey that survivors of domestic and sexual violence take to recover and reclaim their lives. The life of a survivor of violence is full of obstacles and CEASE Inc. offers supportive services to help them over-come throughout East Tennessee and beyond. Kid’s Obstacle Challenge will begin between 10:30-11 a.m.

IJAMS 27TH ANNUAL RIVER RESCUE Ijams Nature Center at 865-577-4717, ext. 135 to register 10 a.m. at Ijams Nature Center The community-wide annual event covers 40 different cleanup sites along the Tennessee River and associated creek tributaries. Each year, approximately 1,000 volunteers clean up tons of trash for our local waterways. Volunteers for the Ijams River Rescue spend several hours helping to pick up trash and debris that is clogging and polluting Knoxville’s river and creeks. Volunteers may come as individuals or in a group, such as families, friends, corporate teams, scout troops, or church groups. Bags and gloves are provided to volunteers for the cleanup and each location has a “site captain” to assist volunteers. For more info, call 865-577-4717, ext. 135. All volunteers will receive a River Rescue t-shirt, featuring artwork from Ijams’ own author and artist Lyn Bales. BIRDS OF PREY PRESENTATION Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area at 423-286-7275 11 a.m. (CST) at Gateway to the Big South Fork Visitor Center in Crossville Join us for a 45-minute interpretive presentation to learn more about birds of prey, their habitat, and why they are an important part of the wildlife diversity on the Cumberland Plateau. COVENANT HEALTH KNOXVILLE 5K Knoxville Track Club and Covenant Health 7 p.m. at Knoxville Convention Center The 5k (3.1 miles) is a scenic run in downtown Knoxville and on the University of Tennessee Campus. Like all of our races that weekend, the 5K will start on the Clinch Avenue Bridge and finish on the 50-yard line in Neyland Stadium. APRIL 3

COVENANT HEALTH KNOXVILLE MARATHON AND HALF MARATHON Knoxville Track Club and Covenant Health 7:30 a.m. at Knoxville Convention Center The marathon course is a 26.2-mile journey designed to show-off Knoxville and run through several of its fine neighborhoods. The marathon course will feature 18 runner refreshment stations. Each station will feature PowerAde and Mountain Valley Spring Water. There will also be four gel station serving GU (flavors: Vanilla Bean, Chocolate Outrage, and Tri-Berry) at approximately the 6.3, 16, 21 and 23 mile marks. Live Music there will be 24 great musical acts lined up all over the course! Restrictions: Marathon participants must be 18 years of age or older. Marathon participants must be able to complete the course, whether running or walking, in 7 hours. The course will be rolled-up in a 16 minute/mile pace. At a pace slower than this, you will need to move to the sidewalks and proceed toward the finish. The finish line will remain open for 7 hours. There is no separate start time for walkers. DAYHIKE: MIDDLE PRONG, TREMONT SECTION OF GSMNP Harvey Broome Group of the Sierra Club TBA: Must pre-register with Denise Bivens at denisebivens@gmail.com for meeting location and time. This is an 8.3-mile in and out hike to Indian Flats Falls. This hike is rated moderate. This trail has quite a bit of history as it follows the creek up an old railroad bed.

BIKE CLASSES I Bike KNX at 865-215-3815 2 p.m. at Third Creek Greenway – Earthfare Trailhead Whether you haven’t been on a bike in years, only ride on greenways, or never learned to bike, we have a class for you! Our Open House style instruction allows you to choose from any of these classes. Bring your kids and your friends all to the same class! Adults $20; kids $10. (Your kids are welcome to come ride around while you are in class, even if they aren’t taking a class. There is a parking lot behind the shopping center with no traffic.) At our Open House sessions, you can choose from: Biking for Beginners; Getting Back on a Bicycle; Learning to Ride: Adults; Freedom from Training Wheels: Children
