Durham to host Earth Day festival

DURHAM — Durham s 2016 Earth Day Festival, sponsored by Durham Parks and Recreation in partnership with Keep Durham Beautiful, will be April 23 from noon 5 p.m. at Rock Quarry Park on 701 Stadium Drive. The rain location is Holton Career and Resource Center on 401 N. Driver Street. An E-Waste Recycling/Shredding Drive will be sponsored by Durham s Solid Waste Management Department. Participants can recycle old electronics and confidential documents at Durham County Stadium, 750 Stadium Dr. from 8 a.m. 2 p.m. A drive through area will be set up to collect the materials. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore will also be collecting gently used household items. Visit www.DPRPlayMore.org[1] for a list of acceptable items.

Additional happenings include educational eco tips from local environmental experts; demonstrations of green products and services by non profit and government agencies; and kid friendly attractions such as arts and crafts, face painting, science experiments and more. Bixby Honey Farm and the Durham County Extension Master Gardeners will be on hand to provide demonstrations and provide information. Musical and dance performances be on the main stage. The event will culminate with the annual Earth Day Parade.

Scrabble tournament Saturday at Northgate

DURHAM — Are you a Scrabble novice who wants to learn more or a whiz who wants to join a tournament? Test your skills against other tournament players Saturday from 10 a.m. 6 p.m. at the Triangle Scrabble Tournament hosted by Triangle Scrabble at Northgate Mall s Center Court.

All ages are invited to register and participate in this round-robin, 8-game match of one-on-one contests and compete to advance in the national ratings with prizes awarded to winners in the top 20 percentile. This tournament is a rated event and requires membership the National North American SCRABBLE Players Association in order to compete and advance in the ratings system. Mall visitors can enjoy watching the games. Game boards will be provided.

Library presents domestic, sexual violence program

DURHAM The Durham County Library and Durham Crisis Response Center (DCRC) with The Durham Chapter of The Links, Inc. will produce Let’s Work Together To Stop Domestic and Sexual Violence, April 9, 10 a.m.–2p.m., at the main library, 300 N. Roxboro St. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. and lunch will be provided. With a highlight on Keeping Safe in the Cyber World, the workshop will have a dual focus: looking at the impact of sexually explicit images disseminated via the Internet and how we all should look at ways to safeguard ourselves while using technology and social media.

The documentary, Not Just Pictures by Dr. Sharon Cooper, forensic pediatrician and executive producer, will be viewed and experts will be on hand to facilitate a discussion. Members from the Durham Police Department will be on hand to share the type of problems such crimes have posed in our community and measures that can be taken to maximize safety in the cyber world.
