I-20 East is back open in Northwest Louisiana, according to Louisiana State Police. The Louisiana Department of Transportation says all lanes are open on I-20 East at Mile Marker 55 (Ada/Taylor). Torrential rains have caused flooding and flash flooding in some parts of the ArkLaTex, prompting dozens of road closures.
Interstate 49 in the Shreveport area remains closed. The Louisiana highway department says north- and southbound I-49 remain closed until further notice between Bert Kouns Industrial Loop in Shreveport and the town of Stonewall due to flooding. Expect delays in the area. Flash floods are the number one weather-related killer in the United States. Most flood deaths happen because people try to drive through high water rather than around it. Drivers are reminded to “turn around, don’t drown.”
Water’s powerful force can easily overtake vehicles caught in a flood. Actually, the average automobile can be swept off the road in just 12 inches of moving water.
