Staying consistent and relatively conservative, desert racing dream team of Las Vegas Rob MacCachren and San Diego s Andy McMillin rolled like Rockstars, benefitting from racing good fortune to overcame a typically challenge 821.38-mile course and over 200 challengers, driving to the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck victory Friday at the 48th annual Bud Light SCORE Baja 1000. When the results became official after review of the data loggers in each finishing vehicle by SCORE officials on Sunday morning, the MacCachren/A. McMillin duo had rocketed to a memorable race around the northern part of Mexico s mysterious and majestic Baja California peninsula. The daring duo finished the mentally-draining, physically grueling race that started and finished in Ensenada in 15 hours, 58 minutes and 33 seconds while averaging a solid 51.41 miles per hour in the No. 11 Rockstar Energy MacCachren Motorsports Ford F-150.
In winning the iconic Granddaddy of all Desert Races for the second straight year, they defeated a field a field of 239 starters in cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads but needed a little assist at the end to pull it out. Finishing second physically, the review of the data loggers and subsequent penalties gave MacCachren his eighth class win and third overall title in this race and McMillin his fifth overall and finish class win in this legendary event. The starting grid included 31 starters in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks. Season finale of the five-race 2015 SCORE World Desert Championship, this year s competition was a loop race, starting and finishing in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, 65 miles south of the U.S. Border at San Diego.
OVERALL PODIUM
A pair of RPM Racing SCORE Trophy Trucks with Mexican drivers finished second and third overall behind USA s MacCachren/A. McMillin duo. Physically crossing the finish line in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultrual Center first for a possible victory, Mexico s Carlos Apdaly Lopez of Tecate, just 20 who won this year s SCORE Baja 500, finished second in the No. 5 RPM Racing Chevy Rally Truck in a time of 16:14:55 with an average speed of 50.55 mph. Third overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck in the No. 17 RPM Racing was Mexico s Eduardo Lalo Laguna in 16:17:23 at 50.44 mph.
UDALL S MOTORCYCLE MAGIC
Taking the overall and unlimited class motorcycle win for the third time in the last four years in this race was the team led by Colton Udall, Yucca Valley, Calif. Teaming up for the victory this year on the powerful ride through Baja was Mark Samuels, Yucca Valley, Calif., and Justin Jones, Murrieta, Calif. Riding a Honda CRF450X, finishing in a corrected time of 16:29:08 with an average speed of 49.82 mph.
In splitting up the race, Udall started and rode to race mile 133. Jones took over at that point, went to race mile 356 where Samuels got on the bike and rode to race mile 563 and Udall got back on for the final section of just under 259 miles. The win gave Honda its 25th overall win in the SCORE Baja 1000. After his team s third win of the season, Udall commented, Taking back the 1x (as season point champion) is a lot of hard work and our team has been working super hard all year to get this done so it feels amazing to be here at the finish line with a giant time gap. I started ninth off the line and kept pushing away and got by a bunch of guys except for Shane Esposito on the 45x (Rider of record-Francisco Arredondo). Justin (Jones) passed him when he crashed and we led ever since.
We nailed our pits, hung our lights perfectly and everything went really good. Surprisingly any issue we had we patched up really well. It was continuous miles and staying focused because if your head breaks down you make a giant mistake and the bike gets bent up.
CHAMPIONSHIP RUN
In earning the overall victory of the SCORE Baja 1000, MacCachren earned his record 13th career SCORE Trophy Truck race win and A. McMillin picked up his eighth career SCORE Trophy Truck race win. With Jason Voss as the team s third driver for last year s championship peninsula run in this race, MacCachren felt two drivers would be sufficient this year and it was. MacCachren, a six-time motorsports All-America driver, started the race and drove the first 470 miles before turning over the wheel to the talented McMillin to drive the rest of the way to the finish line.

Said MacCachren after the race, We started off running a good conservative pace. This morning was really slow and Ricky Johnson (second driver for Justin Matney) started first but he knew he had control of the race and he was going pretty slow. It was pre-run speed but it helped us with gas mileage so we were going to stretch our first pit to 200 miles. Ricky went out on the beach and the pace picked up a little bit. Unfortunately I got a right-rear flat and lost a couple of spots. We worked our way back up to Carlos Lopez s dust and we had to pull into our pit which allowed Cameron Steele to get by and that hurt us. The sun was getting ready to set, the wind stopped and the dust was hanging.
I would be within 30 seconds of Cameron and then a few miles down the road I would be five minutes back because the dust hangs so badly in the silt. We struggled with that for about 150 miles. When I gave Andy the truck today I got on the radio and told him that the truck was in great shape. My job was to get the truck down the track, keep it in good shape and give him something good to deal with and if he needed to pick up time he could go do that. He ended up reeling the guys in and though he wasn t able to pass them, he stayed close and never gave up. I had an early flat and got behind a little bit and over the radio my crew said to me you can do this.
That gave me a lot of hope and kept me fighting. Winning the Bud Light SCORE Baja 1000 is like no other feeling in the world. When you win this race you know that you ve accomplished something. We ve got a very powerful team between the two of us and we both know how to win the race and the guys who work on the truck do what it takes.

McMillin said at the finish line, In the last 200 miles I knew we had to pass Lopez to win and put some time on him as well. I was pushing really hard and the truck gave more than I really could ask from it. I was giving it my all with every gear hitting the rev limiter and really driving as hard as I could. My dad multi-time SCORE race winner Scott McMillin) said while we were out there don t give up because you never know what can happen before you get to the finish line.
Here we are at the finish and it looks like he was right. I think Rob and I are complementary drivers and have similar styles. Rob has a tremendous team of professionals that work on his truck and prepare for the races and it makes all the difference. When I get in this truck I feel next to invincible. Up until the very last corner I told myself that anything can happen out here. It is Mexico, it is the middle of the night and you just never know. You have to stay mentally focused out here because there are so many things happening so quickly that if you lose one second of concentration it could end your race.
ATV WINNER & QUICK FACTS
Winning the overall ATV title for the second straight year was the veteran team led by Mexico s Javier Robles Jr of Guadalupe Victoria. The Robles Jr team covered the course on a Honda TRX450R in 19:02:03, averaging 45.15 mph. Co-riders with Robles Jr on this difficult challenge were Josh Row, El Cajon, Calif./Felipe Velez, San Felipe, Mexico/Jorie Williams, Longview, Washing on a Honda TRX450R.
In the battle of car and truck manufacturers, Ford now leads with 11 chassis wins and extended its lead with 17 engine wins in this race. The top 10 overall 4-wheel finishers in Ensenada were all from the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks. This year s legendary desert classic was the final event of the five-race 2015 SCORE World Desert Championship.
LOS TERRIBLES FOURTH & FIFTH
Fourth overall and fifth overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck (for the second straight year) was the two Terrible Herbst Motorsports teams featuring two of the three Herbst brothers. Fourth was the team of Troy Herbst, Las Vegas/Ryan Arciero, Foothill Ranch, Calif. in 16:46:58 (48.94 mph) in the No. 91 Monster Energy Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150.
Fifth was was the team of Tim Herbst, Las Vegas/Larry Roeseler, Boulevard, Calif. in 17:01:12 (48.26 mph) in the No. 19. Monster Energy Terrible Herbst Ford F-150.
BFGOODRICH TIRES UNMATCHED
In 2015, BFGoodrich Tires is celebrating its 40th year as a major player in SCORE Baja racing. SCORE TROPHY TRUCK SHOWDOWN
For the second straight year, Mexico s Gus Vildosola Jr of Mexicali, entered the race leading the SCORE Trophy Truck season points in the No. 21 Vildosola Racing Ford Raptor. Last year his hopes of being the first Mexican National to win the SCORE Overall points title were stopped with a mechanical issue that forced him out early in the race. This year he finished sixth overall and sixth in SCORE Trophy Truck in the SCORE Baja 1000 after mechanical issues slowed him down again, costing him the season championship for the second straight year.
PERFECT SEASON
Two-time national sports car racing champion Larry Connor of Miamisburg, Ohio, finished a perfect season in Trophy Truck Spec by winning his class over 16 starters for his fifth race win of the season in his Chevy Silverado. Also finishing the season with an unprecedented with his SCORE Baja 1000 victory was SCORE Young Gun Chad Broughton, just 20 of Scotts Valley, Calif., who won Class 3000 for the fifth time in a BajaLite-Chevy.
NEAR PERFECT SEASON
Winning four races this season including their win in the SCORE Baja 1000 were Victor Cesena, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (Class 5, VW Baja Bug), the Class 30 motorcycle team (riders over 30 years old) of Mark Winkelman, Cedar Hill, Texas on a Honda CRF450X and the Sportsman Quad team of Juan Dominguez, Yuma, Ariz. on a Honda TRX450R.

With their wins in this race, earning their third class win in five races in 2015 were Victor Cesena, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (Class 5, VW Baja Bug), Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif. Picking up his second win of the season in the SCORE World Desert Championship were Cody Reid, Apple Valley, Calif. (Class 10, Custom-Chevy), Dan Chamlee Summerland, Calif. (Class 7, Ford Ranger) and Mark Samuels, Yucca Valley, Calif. (Unlimited M/C, Honda CRF450X).

SCORE OH, WHAT A COURSE
SCORE put together another memorable race course, this one for a loop race, with all of the foreboding, unforgiving terrain the northern state of the majestically mysterious Baja California peninsula has to offer. Starting and finishing in the heart of Ensenada in front of the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, the course traveled in a counter-clockwise direction. It included the approximate 35 mile stretch to Ojos Negros which is used in both directions. Outgoing, the course headed Southwest from Ojos through Santo Tomas and then ran South along the picturesque Pacific Ocean for over 100 miles. It featured seven checkpoints, the 821.38-mile course covered both sides of the peninsula paralleled Highway 1 for nearly half of the race, looping south back to the Pacific and then crossing over to the other side of the peninsula below Puertocitos. The course then headed back North along the tranquil Sea of Cortez, past San Felipe paralleling Highway 5 and up to the junction with Highway 3.
The rugged course then paralleled Highway 3 traveling west then northwest back into Ojos Negros and to the finish line in Ensenada.
TIME TRAVEL
This year s race started for the 41st time and finished for the 23rd time in Ensenada. The race started and finish on Boulevard Costero adjacent to the picturesque Bahia de Todos Santos in front of the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada.
GLOBAL INTEREST
In addition to the 30 States represented on the entry list, racers entered from 17 countries. In addition to the United States, racers came from Austria, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, England, Finland, France, Germany, Guatemala, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, Thailand and the US Territory of Guam.
HALL-MARKS ALL OVER BAJA
This year s race commemorated the achievements of legendary desert racers like Rod Hall. Hall, who turns 78 today (Sunday, Nov. 22), won Stock Full in the Rod Hall Racing H1 Hummer. Hall now has a race record 23 class wins (including one overall win in 1972) and he is is the only racer who has competed in all 48 SCORE Baja 1000 races. Helping Hall reach another milestone in his illustrious career were his son Chad Hall, who now has nine class wins in this year, Damien Michelin and Mike Winkel.
SCORE BAJA 1000 MULTI CLASS WINNERS
Among the racers adding to their SCORE Baja 1000 legacy of multiple class wins with their class victories this year were: Rod Hall (23 total class wins, Stock Full), Richard Jackson (14, Class 60), Jim O Neal (11, Class 30), Rob MacCachren (8, SCORE Trophy Truck), Dan Chamlee (7, Class 7), Wayne Matlock (6, Class 19).
DONE DEAL
After review of the data logging devices used by each vehicle in the race and with time penalties assessed accordingly for course deviations and/or speeding on short pavement sections used as part of the official race course, the results were declared official by SCORE International officials early Sunday evening. As the finish line in Ensenada closed Saturday, Nov. 21 at 3:48 p.m. PT for motorcycles/quads and closed Saturday late evening at 10:33 p.m. PT for cars. Trucks and UTVs, there were 124 official finishers in the 48th annual Bud Light SCORE Baja 1000, it was obvious that another memorable and colorful chapter has been added to the legacy of this popular desert race in the magnificent Baja peninsula. The total number of finishers (124) was 51.88 percent giving testimony to the extreme ruggedness of this year s race course.
A total of 239 starters left Ensenada in two major groups motorcycles and ATVs on Friday morning starting at 6 a.m. (PT) and cars and trucks starting at 11:35 p.m. (PT) Friday. Competitors from 30 states, the U.S. Territory of Guam and 17 countries battled the rugged terrain with competition in Pro and Sportsman classes. All vehicles had a 33-hour time limit from the time each left the start line in the elapsed-time race.
