Rick Owens’s newest shop is in heart of LA, yet just beyond the borders of buzzier nearby nabes fitting for the non-comformist who once pledged to “corrupt [fashion] from within.” Located on the outskirts of Hollywood yet not quite in West Hollywood, the cult-fave designer’s ninth boutique arrived by surprise last Thursday, the same day he sent human backpacks down the Paris runway.[1][2][3][4]

At the 5,200-square-foot store’s entrance stands a massive goo-filled tank; Owens originally wanted to use water but opted for a thicker liquid substance after the aqua bubbles (which are unleashed about every 45 seconds) looked too “angry,” reveals staff. Then there’s the floor-to-ceiling fog wall, which staff can activate at the push of a remote control button.

As mentioned, the building was once a ribbon factory in the ’20s; staff points out that it was also the former home of trucker hat brand Von Dutch. The minimalist and monolithic space was designed by architect Anna Tumani, who combined signature design elements like angular walls, concrete flooring, and mirrored wall panels. Yup, Cecil B. DeMille-worthy, indeed.[5]

As far as what’s on the racks, expect to find the Cali-raised designer’s full women’s and men’s collections, including DRKSHDW, that peen-revealing Sphinx line, and his spring/summer 2016 range plus footwear, bags, and accessories. Only about a third of the merch is stocked on the sales floor, but staff can pull more pieces from the back upon request. The store also houses high-end home objects and select coffee table books alongside wife Michele Lamy’s edgy jewelry and luxe silverware.[6][7][8]

Just as suspected[9], the store has its own Owens clones; see what we mean (hint: simply pull up a seat) and explore more inside the gloriously goth haven in the gallery above.

Rick Owens is open Monday through Friday from 11am to 7pm, Saturday from 12 to 7pm, and Sunday from 12 to 6pm.
