A.  FACULTY OF HUMANITIES

All Humanities Ph.D Programs require a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5 point scale except English Studies and History & Diplomatic Studies which requires a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5 point scale. In addition candidates must score a minimum of 60% in the admission interview to be found admissible.

1.  COMPARATIVE LITERATURE PROGRAM

M.A. Comparative Literature

Ph.D Comparative Literature

Requirements for MA Comparative Literature Program:

Candidates shall possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.0 points on a 5 point scale or its equivalent in Literature from a recognized University. Graduates in English have to produce evidence of a minimum of two years (four semesters) academic exposure to French or another language of International communication.

African Language

There is a Special African Language requirement for the Comparative Literature Program. Any candidate who is deficient in speaking, reading or writing an African language will be required to take an appropriate course in the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies and produce evidence of having passed that course.

Requirements for Ph.D Comparative Literature Program:

Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Literature or M.A. Degree in other related discipline in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.

(i)  Postgraduate Diploma in History & Diplomatic Studies (PGDHDS)

Qualifications for Admission

To be eligible for admission into Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomacy, a candidate must have a good honours Degree not less than third class and a CGPA of not less than 1.50 and above in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Law and the Management Sciences.

(ii)  Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the following areas:

Qualifications for Admission into the Masters Programme

To qualify for admission into the M.A Degree Programmes of the Department, candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5 point scale or its equivalent of the University of Port Harcourt or from any other recognized University in the relevant subjects.

Except for Archaeology/Cultural Heritage Management, candidates from non-History backgrounds will be required to pass through the Department’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomacy before admission into the MA programmes.

(iii)  Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programme

Qualifications for Admission

To be eligible for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy programme in History and Diplomatic studies, a candidate must have an MA/M.Sc Degree with a CGPA of 4.00 and above on a 5- point scale in History from any Nigerian University or abroad. Except for Archaeology, candidates from non-History backgrounds are expected to pass through the Department’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomatic Studies to be admitted into Ph.D Degree programmes. In addition, candidates will be required to present a written proposal on a thesis topic in their chosen field, and score a minimum of 60% in pre-admission oral interview.

Requirements for Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies:

To be eligible for admission into the programme, a candidate must have a good honours Degree in any field from any recognized University.  Candidates with HND Upper Credit are also eligible for admission into the PGD Programme.  Candidates with pass Degree will not be admitted.

Requirements for M.A. Linguistics & Communication Studies:

Candidates wishing to enroll in the Communication component must hold at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5 point scale or a Lower Credit with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5 point scale in Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication, Communication Studies/Arts.  Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component must possess the same qualifications in Linguistics or a subject with a strong linguistic component.

Requirements for Ph.D Linguistics & Communication Studies

Candidates wishing to enroll in the Communication component must hold at least a Masters Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.50 on a 5 point scale in Mass Communication, Communication Studies/Arts.  Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component must possess the same qualifications in Linguistics or a subject with a strong linguistic component.

Admission to the MA programme will be open to candidates with the B.A. Degree in Religious and Cultural Studies, Islamic Studies, Theology or other related disciplines such as Philosophy, History, Sociology and Anthropology on a CGPA of 3.0 points on a 5-point scale, from the University of Port Harcourt or any other institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt

M.Ed and Ph.D Regular Programmes on Full-Time and Part-Time basis; M.Ed Sandwich (Long Vacation) programme. All Education Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5 point scale. All Ph.D candidates are expected to attend a pre-admission oral interview, at which they are required to defend their written proposals. (i)  Graduates of the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University who have obtained approved Bachelor’s Degree in Adult Education with at least 3.00 CGPA on a 5 point scale or its equivalent.

(ii) Candidates who did not major in Adult Education but obtained at least 2nd

Class Honours Degree or above and with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 in the

Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Such candidates would be required to do some remedial courses as prescribed in the handbook.

(i)  Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Kinetics or Human Kinetics and Health Education (Integrated Major). Preferably holders of Second Class Honours Degree from a recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent.

(ii)   Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Science Education after having obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Human Kinetics or Human Kinetics and Health Education (this category of candidates may be required to take some additional courses in Human Kinetics and related courses as may be prescribed by the Department).

(iii)  An Upper Credit in Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).

C.    M.Sc (Ed) Health Education

Requirements

(i)   Candidates must possess Second Class Honours Degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5 point scale or its equivalent from a recognized University in Health Education or Health and Human Kinetics (Integrated Major)

(ii)   A Degree in Medicine or appropriate Medical Sciences in Nursing or Advanced  Graduate Diploma in Health Education (AGDHE), Pharmacy, Dentistry and other Health and Environmental related disciplines.

(iii)   Candidates with a Second Class Honours Degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 in related discipline after having obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Health Education or Human Kinetics and Health Education (Integrated Major). Such candidates may be required to take additional courses in Human Kinetics and Health Education as may be prescribed by the Department.

D.   Ph.D in the following areas:

16.  INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION

Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Regular and sandwich (Long Vacation) programme.

The programme consists of four areas, namely:

(a)    Studies in the Theory and Practice of Education

(b)    Specialized Procedure in the Teaching of Subjects

(c)    Supervised Practice in Teaching

(d)    Supervised Project

(i)  Requirements –

Candidates must possess any of the following Degrees;

(a) BSc, BA, B.Eng, MSc, M.A, MBA, Ph.D (without any Teaching Certificate) and their equivalent from a recognized University.(1st Degree with a minimum of 3rd class)

(b) HND Upper Credit and its equivalent from recognized Polytechnics.

(ii) Duration

(a)  Full-Time: The Programme will last for a minimum of 12 calendar months and maximum of 24 calendar months.

C.  FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

All Social Sciences Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale except Economics and Sociology (Demography and Population Studies) which requires a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5 point scale.

Admission to the M.Sc Degree programme in GIS is open to graduates of this University and other approved universities recognized by Senate with a minimum of second class Bachelor’s in Science, Social Medicine, Agriculture and Forestry, Environmental Science, Social Sciences and Engineering etc. Work experience in scientific management and policy-oriented establishments will be an added advantage..

Requirements for  M.Sc in Watershed and Wetlands Management:

Admission to the M.Sc Degree programme in Watershed and Wetlands Management is open to graduates of this University and other approved universities recognized by Senate. They must either hold the Postgraduate Diploma in Geography and Environmental Management with a CGPA of 3.5 and above or a Bachelors Degree in Geography, Civil, Water and Environmental Engineering, Geological Sciences, Environmental Resource Management, Agriculture and Forestry or Environmental Science with a minimum of second class honours and minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 5.0 point scale. Work experience in scientific, management and other related establishments will be an added advantage.

Requirements for  Ph.D in Environmental Management:

Admission to the Ph.D Degree programme is open to graduates of this University who have attained a specific level of performance in the M.Sc programme in GIS, Geography and Environmental Management and related disciplines of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.50 in a five-point scale.

Requirements for  Ph.D in Disaster Risk Management:

Admission to the Ph.D Degree programme in Disaster Risk Management is open to graduates of this University who have attained a specific level of performance in the M.Sc programme in Disaster Risk Management, Geography and Environmental Management and related disciplines of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.50 in a five-point scale.

(i) Executive Master’s Degree Programme in Public Administration (MPA)

Requirements for Executive Master’s Degree Programme in PA.

A candidate for the MPA Programme is expected to be a graduate of the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University with at least a Second Class Honours Lower Division, with a CGPA of not less than 3.0 on a 5-point scale or 4.20 on a 7- point scale.  However, candidates with Third Class  Degree may be considered provided they have relevant employment experience for five (5) years.

DURATION

The Programme is designed to last for twelve calendar months (12), consisting of two semesters and field research/report writing and presentation period.

D. FACULTY OF SCIENCE

Candidates must have a B.Sc in Microbiology with a CGPA of 2.00 – 2.99 on a 5-point scale, B.Sc in relevant disciplines e.g. Biochemistry, Plant Science & Biotechnology, Animal & Environmental Biology, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology Technology and Biomedical Technology with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 – 3.99 on a 5-point scale.

Entry Requirements for M.Sc:

Admission Requirements for M.Sc in Pathogenic Microbiology & Biotechnology

Admisstion into the M.Sc programme in Pathogenic Microbiology and Biotechnology shall be open to the following categories of applicant:

B.Sc Degree in Microbiology from any reputable university with a CGPA not less than 3 in a 5 point scale.

B.Sc in a related discipline including Biotechnology, Pharmacy, and Medicine with a CGPA not less than 3 where applicable.

HND upper credit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology (PGDM) from the University of  Port Harcourt with a CGPA not less than 4.00

Requirements for Ph.D in Animal & Environmental Biology:

Candidates for the Ph.D programme must have a Masters Degree and should normally have an average of at least 60% or CGPA of 4.0 in the relevant discipline at the Masters level.

For candidates who obtained their Masters exclusively by research assessment, admission will be based on the quality of their thesis. Candidates may be required to attend a pre-admission interview session. Final selection of a candidate shall be based on his/her interview performance and other criteria.

Requirements for M.Sc in Forestry and M.Sc in Wildlife & Ecotourism Management:

Candidates for admission into M.Sc programme must have a good Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry/Forest Resources Management/Wood Science or Wildlife Management. The prospective candidates must possess at least a second class (Lower Division) Bachelors’ Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.00 (on a 5-point scale) in Forestry/Forest Resources Management/Wood Science, Wildlife Management or Agriculture, and other equivalent fields obtained from any University recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt. Candidates must have full Ordinary Level Certificate with a credit level pass in English Language. In exceptional cases, candidates with Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental/Biological Science or related field who meet the above stated requirements, but have minimal deficiencies in Forestry, may be admitted. Such deficiencies through approved courses recommended by the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee will be audited.

33.  DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL SCIENCE

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) Programme in Animal Science and Master of Science (M.Sc) programme in Animal Nutrition and Agricultural Biochemistry.

Admission Requirements:

Generally, candidates seeking admission into graduate programmes in Animal Science in the University of Port Harcourt shall normally be graduates of the University or any other similar Institutions recognized by the University. They must possess a first Degree, preferably Bachelor of Agriculture (B. Agric, Animal Science option), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc, Animal Science) or in related area. The Degrees must ordinarily be registrable with the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS).

Matriculation requirements for admission into the Animal Science programme for the University of Port Harcourt include credits in Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science and any one of Physics, Economics or Geography at not more than two sittings.

39.  DEPARTMENT OF HAEMATOLOGY, BLOOD TRANSFUSION AND IMMUNOLOGY

Requirements for M.Sc in Immunology Programmes:

A minimum of five O’level credit passes including English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics in addition to an acceptable high score at the JME and Post UME.

The Course is open to graduates of Medicine, Dentistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Nursing, Biochemistry, Molecular-Biology, Microbiology, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Zoology and other relevant courses. Candidates who hold a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower Division) with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5 point scale or in any of the above mentioned subjects, from the University of Port Harcourt or other recognized Universities shall be eligible for admission into the programme except, the Medical  and Dental graduates.

G.  FACULTY OF CLINICAL SCIENCES

40.  M.Sc Sports Medicine

(a)   For medically qualified persons with MB.BS, B.Ch or a fellowship in any

Medical discipline.

(b)   The duration of Course is 18 – 36 months.

The Course work will be taught in two semesters of 12 months while the

student will spend the remaining 6 months in a training attachment and a

project work.

(c)   Area of specialty – Sports Medicine generally, while the project work will be on Sport of interest.

41.  DEPARTMENT OF PREVENTIVE AND SOCIAL MEDICINE

Admission Requirements:

The Programmes will be open to candidates who possess a first Degree in Medicine, Basic Medical Sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing and other relevant courses allied to Medicine. In addition candidates must have at least three years post Degree experience and must have completed National Youth Service (NYSC) programme. Candidates for admission into the programme will undergo a selection process and only those who are successful will be admitted into the programme.

To serve the interest and needs of all Medical, Health and allied professions who desire the programme, there is need to simultaneously mount two separate programmes, one for medically qualified graduates and another for non-medically qualified professionals who wish to practice Public Health.

Requirements for Master of Public Health Programme:

(a) MBBS or its equivalent, with a minimum of three years post qualification experience.

(b) Candidates are also required to pass the qualifying examination.

Requirements for MSc  Public Health Programme:

(a) B.Sc Honours in a health-related discipline with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division (22) Degree with CGPA not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale or CGPA of 2.5 on a 4 point scale.

Such candidates may be required to take remedial undergraduate courses in Pharmacognosy as recommended by the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee.

Requirements for Ph.D

(i) Candidates who possess the M.Pharm Degree in Pharmacognosy of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized Universities, with a CGPA of 3.5 on a 5-points scale. However candidates with CGPA of 3.0 in their M.Pharm or M.Sc Programmes in the Pharmacognosy or related disciplines may be considered for admission. Such candidates shall be required to take recommended 700 level/remedial courses which they must pass at an average score of 60% in the first year.

(ii) Candidates with M.Sc/M.Pharm Degree (minimum CGPA of 3.5); M.Phil Degrees in Pharmacognosy, Ethnomedicine, Chemistry, Biochemistry or Botany of the University of Port Harcourt or other approved Universities. Final selection of candidates is by presentation of a research proposal. Part-Time candidates will also be considered.

(ii) Graduates of the University of Port Harcourt holding a Masters Degree  as stated above in the requirements for M.Pharm who have obtained at least a CGPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale or an overall average of 60%(B) in the course work.

(iii) A graduate of any other recognized university who meets the above requirements shall be admitted on presentation of transcripts from the university.  Candidates may be required to take relevant remedial courses as may be recommended by the Departmental and Faculty Graduate Committees.

Duration

The programme is designed to last for two semesters of full time course work.

J. FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

All Engineering Ph.D programmes require a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5 point scale.  Candidates would be required to attend an interview before admission and registration for the programme, and will be required to write a qualifying examination.

Requirements for Faculty of Engineering

1.   PGD Programmes:  Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 3rd Class Honours in his/her choice of discipline or a minimum of 22 in any other related Engineering discipline.

2.   M.Eng Programmes:   Candidates must possess either a Bachelor’s Degree with minimum of Second Class Honours in the relevant Discipline, with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 5 point scale or PGD in the relevant areas with minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5 point scale.

46. Master of Engineering Management (MEM) in the following areas:

(a)   Chemical Engineering

(b)   Civil Engineering

(c)   Electrical./Electronic Engineering

(d)   Mechanical Engineering

(e)   Petroleum Engineering

Requirements:

Candidates must possess a Second Class Bachelor’s Degree in a chosen Engineering discipline with a minimum CGPA of 3.0. The MEM is a Terminal Degree.

47.  Master of Environmental Engineering Technology (M.ENV.T)

Requirements:

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related science discipline, with a minimum CGPA of 3.0. The M.Env.T is a Terminal Degree.

48. DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

(i)   Postgraduate Diploma in Chemical Engineering  (PGDCE)

(ii) M.Eng, Ph.D in Chemical Engineering

Requirements for PGDCE

Candidates for PGDCE must possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of Third Class in Chemical Engineering or Second Class lower in any other Engineering discipline.

Duration:

The programme shall last for a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months of full-time study or 36 calendar months and a maximum of 84 calendar months for part-time study.

49. DEPARTMENT OF PETROLEUM & GAS ENGINEERING

(i)     Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Engineering (PGDPE)

(ii)   Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Technology (PGDPT)

Requirement for PGDPE:

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of Third Class in Petroleum & Gas Engineering or a minimum of Second Class in any related Engineering Discipline.

(ii)   Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Technology (PGDPT)

Requirement for PGDPT:

Candidates with Degrees in Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Geophysics, or Metallurgy with a minimum of Second Class Lower Degree or Third Class with at least five (5) years industrial experience are eligible to apply.

(iii)    M.Eng., Ph.D in Petroleum Engineering in the following areas:

(a)    Reservoir Engineering

(b)    Gas Engineering

(c)    Drilling Engineering

50.  DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

PGD, M.Eng. and Ph.D programmes in Mechanical Engineering

(i)    Postgraduate Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (PGDME)

Requirements for PGDME:

Candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma in Mechanical Engineering must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from a reputable university with a minimum of third class honours for graduates of mechanical or mechatronic engineering, or a minimum of second class lower division for graduates of other related engineering field such as marine engineering, mining engineering, agricultural engineering or chemical engineering.

ii)   M.Eng., Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering in the following areas:

(a)    Applied Mechanics and Design

(b)    Engineering Materials Design

(c)    Production/Industrial Engineering

(d)    Thermofluid Engineering

Requirements for M.Eng Admission:

Candidates for the M.Eng in Mechanical Engineering must possess a good Bachelor’s Degree (B.Eng) or an acceptable Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 (or 3.5 for PGD holders). Bachelors Degree holders from other related field of engineering (such as Marine Engineering, Mining Engineering, Agricultural Engineering or Chemical Engineering) with a minimum of second class upper division may also be considered, but they must be prepared to remedy the deficiencies by taking the recommended Department’s undergraduate and/or Postgraduate Diploma courses in addition.

Requirements for Ph.D Admission:

To be admitted into the Ph.D Degree programme in Mechanical Engineering, each aspiring student must fulfill the following requirements:

(i)  Satisfy the general University requirements for admission into the programme.

(ii) Possess a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum CGPA OF 4.00 on a 5-point scale or a minimum percentage score of 60% obtained from a recognized University.

(iii)  Provide a copy of the Master’s Degree transcript and the details of the referees on his/her academic work and

(d) Be successful (score at least 60%) in a proposal   presentation/admission screening interview to be organized by the Department.

51. DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

M.Eng., Ph.D in Civil Engineering in the following areas:

(a)    Geotechnical Engineering

(b)    Water Resources Engineering

(c)    Highway & Transportation Engineering

O’Level Admission Requirements:

Candidates must possess at least a credit pass in five subjects including Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology to be qualified for admission into M.Eng Programme in Civil Engineering.

Admission Requirements for Master of Engineering (M.Eng)

To be admitted into any of the Specializations in the M.Eng (Civil Engineering) Degree Programme, a candidate must possess a minimum of second class (Honours) Degree in Civil Engineering, with a minimum CGPA above 3.0 on a 5 point scale obtained from the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University.  Preference will be given to those with a CGPA of 3.5 and above (corresponding to second class Honours Upper Division or First Class).

Admission Requirements for Ph.D

Candidates for Admission into Ph.D Civil Engineering Programme must possess the Master of Engineering or Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University with at least a CGPA) of 4.0 on a 5 point scale (corresponding to an average score of a B grade).

K. FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES

All Management Sciences Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5-point scale. All Ph.D candidates are expected to attend a pre-admission oral interview, at which they are REQUIRED to defend their written proposals.

All Management Sciences programmes require O’level credit pass in English Language, Mathematics, Economics and two other relevant subjects.

Requirements for PGD Programmes:
