Two-time defending champion Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela averaged 237.5 to lead the first round of the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Dexter Monday at the Suncoast Bowling Center in Las Vegas.

In his quest to become the Senior U.S. Open’s first three-time winner, Monacelli bowled a 1,425 six-game pinfall total with games of 238, 256, 234, 238, 237, 222.

Monacelli holds a 17-pin lead over fellow Hall of Famer Wayne Webb of Columbus, Ohio, who is also trying to win the Senior U.S. Open for the third time having won the event in 2008 and 2009. Webb had a 1,408 pinfall with games of 231, 239, 246, 256, 191 and 245.

“I’m continuing to work hard on improving on my mental game and knowledge of my equipment,” said the 52-year-old Monacelli. “I would say that my priority in this tournament is to make sure I keep a calm attitude and that will help me make the right decisions on what ball I need to use and what adjustments I need to make.

“The key is after I make the best possible shot I can, accept the result – good or bad – and move on to concentrate on what I need to do next without getting too emotional.”

Monacelli, a 19-time winner on the PBA Tour, opened the 2014 PBA50 Tour season with a win in the Pasco County (Fla.) Open which was his third career title on the tour for players 50 years of age and older.

Rounding out the top 10 after the first round were Robert Lawrence, Austin, Texas, 1,391; 2011 Senior U.S. Open winner and 2013 runnerup Ron Mohr of N. Las Vegas, 1,379; Jack Jurek, Lackawana. N.Y., 1,373; Hall of Famer and 2013 PBA50 Rookie of the Year Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo, 1,371; Stony Baker, Canton, Ga., 1,359; Hall of Famer and reigning PBA50 Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., 1,335; Barry Zimmerman, Grand Forks, N.D., 1,332, and Roger Kossert, Lithia, Fla., 1,330.

Hall of Famer Tom Baker of King, N.C., also hoping to win the Senior U.S. Open for the third time having captured the title in 2005 and 2006, finished the round tied for 13th with 1,318.

The 191-player field will bowl two more six-game qualifying rounds Tuesday and Wednesday after which the field will be cut to the top 53 players for another eight-game qualifying round Thursday morning. The top 24 players after Thursday’s qualifying round will advance to match play rounds Thursday afternoon and Friday to determine the top four players for the stepladder finals at 4 p.m. PT on Friday.

The Senior U.S. Open, the first major of the season, is considered the most demanding test for players because of its grueling format. Like the U.S. Open on the PBA Tour, the Senior U.S. Open demands patience, quality shot-making and a strong mental game over 50 games of qualifying and match play.
