In this daily review we will focus on the World athletics championships in Beijing which started today with the qualifications in sprint where Justin Gatlin ran faster than Usain Bolt. However, this was the only round of qualifications and none of the favorites ran as fast as they can. Gatlin stopped the clock at 9.83, while Bolt ran 9.96. Both of them won their respective races and Tyson Gay is the only one who didn’t run below the 10 second mark of all favorites for the medals.
Mo Farah defended his title in the 10 thousand meters race, while 19-year-old Ghirmay Ghebrselassie became the youngest marathon champion ever!
In English Premier League six matches were played today. Manchester United failed to defeat Newcastle United, the result was 0:0. The hosts attacked from the first minute, they were unlucky in several occasions and in the end Newcastle saved their net. In other matches, Crystal Palace defeated Aston Villa by 2:1, Leicester and Tottenham drew 1:1, just like Norwich and Stoke and Sunderland and Swansea. West Ham lost another home match, this time against Bournemouth by 3:4 in a very exciting game.
In German Bundesliga six matches were played today. Manuel Neuer conceded the fastest ever goal in Bundesliga, after only eight seconds! Bayern Munich’s defense made a terrible mistake and Kevin Volland took advantage of that. Hoffenheim led until 41st minute when Muller equalized and in the final moments of the match Robert Lewandowski scored the second goal for Bayern and brought them victory. In other matches Eintracht Frankfurt and Augsburg played 1:1, Hannover were defeated against Bayer Leverkusen by 0:1, Koln and Wolfsburg played 1:1, Schalke and Darmstadt also drew 1:1 and Hamburg defeated Stuttgart by 3:2.
In Italian Serie A two matches were played today. Verona and Roma played 1:1 and Lazio defeated Bologna by 2:1.
In Spanish Primera Division four matches were played today. La Coruna and Real Sociedad played 0:0, Espanyol defeated Getafe by 1:0, same as Atletico Madrid Las Palmas, while Rayo Vallecano and Valencia will finish their match late in the night.
In French Ligue 1 six matches were played today. Lyon lost to Rennes by 1:2, Bastia defeated Guingamp by 3:0, Ajaccio was defeated against Angers by 0:2, Nantes defeated Reims by 1:0, Nice defeated Caen by 2:1 and Toulouse and Monaco drew, 1:1.
At ATP Cincinnati two matches were finished late last night CET: Murray defeated Gasquet by 2:1, while Federer defeated Lopez by 2:0. Today, Djokovic defeated Dolgopolov by 2:1, while Federer and Murray will finish their match late in the night.
At WTA Cincinnati two matches were played late last night CET: Jankovic defeated Schmiedlova by 2:0 and Halep defeated Pavlyuchenkova by 2:0.
