Like to travel? Want to see the world? Sick of the same old “must-see” lists that repeat the same top travel destinations (New York, Paris, London, Rome, Beijing, Tokyo, ect.) over and over again?

The New York Times has released a list of 52 of the top travel destinations around the world, specifically for 2014. The selections are based on suggestions from writers and take into account any particularly compelling cultural or historical events taking place in each location, while maintaining a mix of regions and interests.

The list is somewhat subjective—chosen by The New York Times’ travel editors—and each individual will most likely have their own criteria for what makes a destination a top choice. Nonetheless, here is a snippet of The New York Time’s top travel destinations for 2014:

1. Cape Town, South Africa

2. Christchurch, New Zealand

3. North Coast, California
