This U.S. Mint numismatic sales report covers the week ending March 5, 2017—which was not a particularly good week for the Mint. During this period, two new product groups were released: the America the Beautiful Effigy Mounds National Monument Uncirculated three-coin set, which was made available for purchase on February 27; and the coins in the annual release of American Eagle gold Proofs, all made available on March 2.
Items from these groups comprised four of the top six sellers for the Mint. At the head of the list was the ATB Effigy Mounds three-coin set (17AD), with 9,413 units sold. In second, fifth, and sixth places, respectively, were the American Eagle gold Proof four-coin set (17EF), the AGE Proof 1/10-ounce coin (17EE), and the AGE Proof and 1-ounce coin (17EB). Although the inaugural sales for the ATB quarter set were commensurate with those from last year, the AGE Proof figures took a drastic hit:

The dismal performance can’t be explained by opening-week prices, which were the same both years, or by a drop in consumer spending—according to February’s Gallup poll, it was higher than in any February since 2008. Some collectors may be saving up for the 2017 American Liberty high-relief gold coin (17XA, to be released at noon on April 6), but that seems insufficient to explain decreases ranging from 56% to 72% in sales of AGE Proof coins.
The Lions Clubs International Proof silver dollar (17CH), which ranked second in sales on the prior report, dropped to ninth place last week, with 1,878 sold. The Uncirculated version (17CJ) plummeted from 6th place to 26th, with a scant 209 reported sold.
Going back to fill in the top five, we have the 2016 1-ounce American Silver Eagle Proof coin (16EA) coming in third, with 3,914 units sold; and the 2017 ATB Quarters Silver Proof Set (17AQ) in fourth, with 3,296 sold.
The report shows a handful of very minor negative adjustments, and no products were newly removed. No new products will be released next week; on the report for the first time will be the ATB Effigy Mounds 5-ounce Uncirculated coin and the three Boys Town Centennial commemorative coins.
