A little over three weeks into the new year, not a lot has happened on the U.S. Mint’s sales schedule. We’ve opted to combine the Mint’s numismatic and precious-metals sales figures for this report, and to begin breaking them into separate reports again in the next week or two.
Starting January 9, the Mint’s Authorized Purchasers (APs) were able to order the new, 2017-dated American Eagle (gold and silver only) and American Buffalo (gold) bullion coins. Some 3,747,500 ounces of American Eagle silver bullion coins—almost 35% more than on last year’s launch date—were purchased on the first day. The first-day figure for American Buffalo gold bullion coins was ever so slightly down: 20,500 ounces, compared to 21,000 ounces in 2016. The following chart gives a complete comparison of all bullion types for the two years.

The Mint’s comprehensive sales figures for 2017 to date are as follows:
Gold Eagle—179,000 oz.
Silver Eagle—4,722,500 oz.
Platinum Eagle—13,300 oz.
Gold Buffalo—28,000 oz.
As mentioned, the first of the America the Beautiful 5-oz. silver bullion coins for 2017, honoring Effigy Mounds National Monument, have not yet been released.
The Mint’s retail calendar year kicked off on January 5, with the release of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2017 Proof Set (17AQ). As of the close of the Mint’s reporting period on January 8, the Mint had sold 35,612 units; as of January 15, 37,677 units; and as of the latest reporting period, January 22, 39,966 units. That gives us a net sales figure of 2,289 in the last week.
The ATB Proof Set was followed on January 10 by the 2017 Birth Set and Happy Birthday Set. As of January January 22, these have sold 3,589 and 3,314 units, respectively.
The month’s most exciting release has been the Lions Clubs International Centennial commemorative silver dollars, which were available for purchase on January 18. Formal first-day sales figures were not available; as of the close of the January 22 reporting period, the Proofs (17CH) had sold 23,349 units, while the Uncirculated coins (17CJ) had sold 7,107.
The following chart shows the numismatic sales numbers for the reporting period ending January 22. “LKS” indicates that the number given is the last known sales figure for a sold-out item. Mintage and product limits are indicated, where applicable; if a coin is in stock but is nearing sold-out status, a link to the Mint’s product page is provided. Items in italics are scheduled for release but are not yet available; items in bold are appearing on the report for the first time.
Items like the 2016 commemorative coins and the American Gold Eagle Proofs will remain on our report as long as they appear on the Mint’s report, even if they are listed as unavailable on the Mint’s website. Where one item in a group of comparable items (e.g., the 1/10-oz. AGE Proof) goes off the Mint’s report, it will remain on our report for comparison with other items in the group. Once all items in the group go off the Mint’s report, Coin Update will remove the group as well. ❑
