WritingCareer.com, an online resource to find literary markets that pay for prose and poetry, has debuted a new editorial section called Speculative Fiction Markets for Sci-Fi and Fantasy Writers.

Writers can now find new “calls for submissions” that need speculative fiction stories, including science fiction, fantasy, horror, alternative history, and magical realism. Market listings consist of a medley of opportunities, including:

• Anthologists who need horror, paranormal, or steampunk stories for forthcoming anthologies or special book projects;

• Magazine editors who need sci-fi/fantasy stories for future issues;

• Website publishers who publish flash fiction and themed-material on an on-going basis;

• Literary agents who are looking to represent emerging and established authors in the genre; and

• Book imprints that are soliciting novel-length manuscripts for future publication.

Because speculative fiction is a popular genre that writers search for at WritingCareer.com, founder and Editor-in-chief Brian Scott decided to compile and continually update the new section with 15 markets that need story submissions right now.

Each market listing specifies: current needs of the editor or publisher; the deadline (if available); the pay rate; what to submit; and how to submit.

Scott attributes the popularity of speculative fiction to the creative freedom it allows: “As a creative storyteller you are not bound by reality or the universe’s laws. You can write a story derived from pure imagination and conjecture, filling it with mythological monsters and supernatural beings, and using alien spacecrafts and sorcery if you want to.”

In the last few years, Scott says publishers of speculative fiction have been advocating for more diversity and actively encouraging marginalized and underrepresented authors to submit material exclusively, including writers of color, writers who identify as female; LGBTQ+ writers; writers with disabilities; impoverished writers; etc.

Standard industry rates to write speculative fiction is 6 cents/word, but there are plenty of publishers who pay more depending on the project.

Since 2011 WritingCareer.com has been helping writers and poets earn money with their writing. Updated during the week, the website reports on opportunities to write nonfiction, fiction, and poetry for a wide variety of literary journals, small press and mainstream magazines, Kickstarter-funded publishing projects, and special anthologies.
