While there is a beautiful side to Hawaii, there is also a dark side.

The world can easily visualize a land filled with beautiful girls on bikini beaches, stunning scenery, and visitors from around the world vacationing in swank hotels. However, Hawaii has long been the meth capital of the Unites States; at least since the 1980s. Most people get their information about Hawaii from surf media and slick brochures. It is almost seen as a twisted version of Disneyland where Micky Mouse is replaced with neck tattoos. Hawaii is unique, and isn island nation with extremes between wealth and poverty. However, Hawaii is a paradise with drug addiction problems. At present, there are a number of diverse ethnic groups (tied to drug trafficking) that vie for power and influence while relying heavily on revenues generated by tourism.

Drug Problems in Paradise

As mentioned, Hawaii has been the meth capital of the US since the early 1980s. Meth first appeared on the island when drug trafficking organizations tested a form of meth known as ice. The drug is popular in Korea, the Philippines, and other parts of Southeast Asia. While Hawaii seeks to eradicate marijuana from the state, meth addiction still looms.

Signs of Meth Addiction

As in any drug, meth users will show signs there is an addiction problem. Meth can be smoked, injected, swallowed, or inhaled. Signs of abuse may include, but are not limited to, increased fatigue, talkativeness, loss of appetite, intense sweating, rapid heartbeat, and hyperthermia. Tooth decay, also known as meth mouth, is prevalent among meth addicts.

Meth is highly addictive because it alters the way a person’s brain reacts to pleasure. In time, the brain stops producing its own pleasure chemicals and relies solely on the drug. As the body builds up resistance, meth addicts have to increase their dose or increase their frequency of us. It is a vicious cycle as their body is in a constant state of withdrawal. Meth releases extremely high levels of dopamine, which limits motion function while imparting high levels of pleasure.

People normally receive dopamine after sex, eating, or engaging in other pleasure activities. The short-term pleasure received from meth is at least 12 times that of eating, sex, or other activities. It is little wonder that a meth addict will forsake all other things for their next meth high.

Rehab Solutions

The only solution for fighting a meth addiction is clinical rehab. When an individual decides to seek help, the first solution is to rid their body of harmful toxins. As it stands, meth addiction is difficult to address. Intake specialists at the rehab center will consider the patient’s addiction and screen for additional addictions and co-occurring mental disorders. Meth treatment embodies an inpatient program where individual can receive around-the-clock treatment and supervision. No two individuals are alike, and neither will any two treatments offer the exact same levels of medication. Each meth addiction rehab program is tailored to the individual’s needs.

Detox will last as long as it takes for the patient’s body to regain its chemical balance. However, medications must be accompanied by intense counseling and behavioral therapies that help patients make the mind/behavior connection of how they arrived at their present circumstance.
