Virgil’s Automotive Paint Supply of Bishop, California was recently awarded a GSA schedule which allows the company to work directly with the federal government. The company was founded in 1989 and is an expert at providing quality paints and coatings. The GSA schedule will allow the company to compete more directly for federal contracts and offer PPG and 3M materials in the commercial coating category.

Cori Stearns, owner of California-based Virgil’s Automotive Paint Supply, (VAPS) was awarded a GSA schedule (51V) from the federal government on March 31, 2013, and it appears that she will be one of the last to receive it. The schedule allows the company to compete for federal contracts and offer their services to federal agencies. Company spokesperson and owner, Cori Stearns announced the award and said, “We are excited to be able to compete for federal contracts and to bring our expertise to our federal clients.”

The GSA schedule allows the company to compete in the commercial coating category supplying their PPG refinish material and 3M materials. Federal clients can expect the same top quality coatings that the shop is known for and the same level of attention that every client receives. “We are known for our small town customer service skills and for going the extra mile for every customer we have.” Stearns said. “We plan on carrying that through to every GSA customer as well.”

With the addition of VAPS and a few other companies, GSA has chosen to close the commercial coatings category of their Hardware superstore to new applications. This means that no more vendors can successfully apply to supply these products to the government through this contract vehicle. “Being last on a closing schedule sounds like a bad thing, but it is actually the opposite.” said James Lampson, a consultants with GSA Program Experts, “You see, this is a five-year contract, and as the pre-existing vendors reach the end of their contract terms, there will be fewer and fewer vendors supplying a critical need.”

VAPS plans to leverage their GSA contract and the fact that they are the only automotive paint store in the state to offer a complete line of solvent-based material to begin supplying their coatings, sealants and lubricants to the US military in California.  Most firms in California are required to offer only water-based material, but VAPS operates in a jurisdiction that allows materials to be solvent-based, enabling them to better satisfy the needs of military personnel.
