Ebony Behind the Mahogany: A Spirited Tribute to Douglas Ankrah
After the hugely successful ‘Tom Bullock’ dinner in 2012, Colin Appiah, Gary Regan and pals return with the 2013 instalment of ‘Ebony Behind the Mahogany’. This is an annual series which celebrates the growing diversity in our craft and pays tribute to the pioneering black bartenders of past and present, in an evening of fine food, finer cocktails and great stories told by great storytellers, aboard the legendary paddle steamer ‘The Creole Queen’.
In 2013, we honor legendary London bartender Douglas Ankrah, whose influence on the cocktail scene in London and around the world can still be felt today. Douglas founded the ‘London Academy of Bartending’ through which many young British bartenders cut their teeth, and London (and the world) learned to drink proper cocktails once more at Douglas’s venues, Atlantic, LAB and Townhouse. Douglas and his venues won countless awards and inspired a generation all over the world to pick up their shakers and step behind the mahogany in London and in cities across the globe.
Each level of the Creole Queen will play host to the drinks and drinksmiths of each venue, with many celebrated names of the UK bar scene coming out of retirement to honor Douglas and his enormous impact on our modern craft. Drinks will be provided by an all star cast including Gary Regan, Simon Ford, Jamie Evans, Jim Meehan, Duane Sylvestre, Franky Marshall, Derek Brown and many more. Enjoy cocktails from London’s Golden Age, thanks to our partner Bacardi USA, and delicious food from the talented team at the Creole Queen. Hudson Bar and Books will also be matching cigars and rum for guests throughout the evening.
A full Creole Buffet, Jazz Band, and Bar and Books Cigar pairings will be available for the duration of the cruise. Please dress in Evening Attire.

The Irish in New Orleans
A Celtic Creole Courtship
Join Diageo Master of Whisky Robert Sickler as he hosts a spirited dinner with the famed Bushmills Irish Whiskey portfolio at the Irish House, one of New Orleans most coveted locations for Irish libations and Celtic fare.
When most consider the cultural influences of New Orleans the French, African, Spanish and Creole come immediately to mind. In the early 1800’s, however, a rather significant wave of Irish immigrants landed in the Crescent City, shaping the city’s commerce, history and culture with their own unique customs and flair.
A Creole Celtic Courtship will showcase food pairings created by award-winning, internationally trained Chef Matt Murphy. A Dublin native, Murphy hasworked and studied in kitchens in Ireland, England, China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Hawaii and New Orleans. He brings an international arsenal of culinary wisdom to his daily approach to cooking, while embracing the regional and historic influences of New Orleans. The dinner will include dishes with an Irish emphasis but presented with a local accent.
Robert will introduce a portfolio tasting of the renowned Bushmills portfolio, highlighting its history, unique recipe, maturation expertise and commitment to world class quality. He will also be presenting a series of refreshing cocktails with ingredients which reflect the fellow cultures which helped form the personality and color of New Orleans. They will consist of Bushmills whiskies as the base, with the addition of Spanish Sherries, French liqueurs, Creole bitters, African teas, Italian Amaros and fresh, local produce.
Robert will also speak on the Irish influence of New Orleans, starting with the New Basin Canal, the settling of Adele Street and the Irish channel, early influence in local politics, the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1809, historic Irish landmarks, and local Irish businesses in New Orleans today.
Whether you’re a history buff, whiskey lover, cocktail aficionado or fan of the Irish this a spirited dinner not to miss!
