Tony Award nominations were announced this morning, with Lucy Liu and Jonathan Groff revealing nominees in 26 competitive categories.

Hedwig‘s Neil Patrick Harris scored a nomination for
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, playinga  trans rocker from East Germany trapped in Middle America. The show received eight nominations in all, including Best Revival and Best Actress in a Featured Role (Musical) for Lena Hall.

Terrance McNally’s gay-themed Mothers and Sons landed a nod for Best Play, with Best Actress nominee Tyne Daley playing a grieving mother confronting her son’s lover. Also on the Best Play list: Harvey Fierstein’s Casa Valentina, which sees a group of heterosexual cross-dressers gather in the Catskills in 1962. Mare Winningham was nominated for Best Actress in a Featured Role for her role as a seemingly supportive wife.

Out actress Cherry Jones earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role for The Glass Menagerie, a category that sees her up against Audra McDonald for Lady Day and Estelle Parsons for The Velocity of Autumn.

Overall,  A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder scored the most nominations, with ten, including Best Musical. Also garnering top nods were Hedwig and the Angry Inch, with eight, and After Midnight, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,  The Glass Menagerie, and Twelfth Night, all with seven nominations.

The  2014 Tony Awards will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall June 8 at 8pm on CBS.
