Xtreme Chess

I don’t understand why Japanese role-playing games need to move on from turn-based battles. I don’t see it as retro and certainly not outdated. It is a style of battle which allows for some strategy while still being straightforward to pick up.

What next? Should chess have real-time matches and where both players just move their pieces around the board as they like, to bring it into the 21st century?

Go West

With all the hype surrounding Persona 5 I’m left wondering if and when we will see a European release, especially now that Sega owns Atlus (to be honest I’m not entirely sure what this means in terms of European localisations though).

GC has been on the professional side of gaming for several years so what is your opinion regarding this?
ar1speedboy

GC: Since Atlus has never had a European office it makes no practical difference. And although Sega in general don’t tend to localise many games themselves Atlus has a pretty good track record, considering how esoteric most of their stuff is. If Persona 4 Arena and Persona Q made it then Persona 5 has nothing to worry about.

Almost good value

So the amiibo price is £10.99. Compared to Skylanders and Disney Infinity, that’s not too bad considering that they can be used in other games as well. I do think though they should do some sort of discount for those who buy all of them and maybe in a special box or something. I like how they look and put it this way, some of my Christmas presents are sorted this year!

What I like about them is that they are extras and not forced on you. I really wanted to play Disney Infinity as I love Disney (figures look great too!) but when I found out that I needed separate figures to unlock new worlds and with a starting price of £59.99 on most consoles, that really sucks. Again Skylanders requires you to have at least one of each element figure to complete it 100%. That’s a lot of money to see everything in the game.

So that’s why I like amiibo. Yes Nintendo get stick for a lot of things (and quite rightly so – I may be a big fan but there are some things they need to change!) but these figures are doing it right: optional extras which do not take anything away from the original game and figures which can be used across multiple games and not just for one series. This is what I like to see, something I think Skylanders and Infinity have always missed the mark with.

Good example

I’m getting annoyed with myself for not liking Anita Sarkeesian videos more.

Every time I watch I’m thinking that’s a bad example or you’re not really proving your point there. I have even commented as such on message boards, although some of the comments you read there… but that’s another issue.

The main reason I’m annoyed is because there are no shortage of games she could use to illustrate her point which hold no kitsch, artistic or satirical value.

I also don’t like the conclusion of the latest video. which is a can’t win/don’t try attitude, that raising an issue without proper fully explored depth isn’t enough. It’s the sort of thinking which would diminish Wolfenstein no end and considering 99% of games fail to tell a coherent story in their main plot, I think is asking a little much.

Personally I’m comfortable with the existence of dross like Dead Or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball but I’m not comfortable that the likes of Lara, Samus, Jade, and FemShep , shining examples that they are, having so few stable mates.

GC: Some perfectly reasonable points, if only the other critiques of her videos had been so level-headed.

Official mug

I played the Destiny beta and had my mind set on getting it, but then the news of all the tat started to flow, multiple special versions of the game, the now commonplace talk of pre-order bonuses and downloadable content, the mugs, keyrings, hoodies, etc.

Such things really put me off, gaming should be a level playing field I don’t want to fire up a game to see people with overpowered weapons and armour I’ll never own. I don’t want to pre-order a game from one shop month’s in advance only to see others offering store exclusive downloadable content for pre-ordering from them a few weeks before release, I don’t want to see different downloadable content for different consoles.

Somebody make it stop.
RyokoSparda

GC: It’ll stop the minute people stop buying it. There’s no one else publishers will listen to.

Hands across the Internet

I wonder if you or any tech savvy readers can help me out. My bro has got a PlayStation 4 and the 60″ Sharp Aquos LED TV. His PlayStation 4 runs fine in 1080i. But the video signal is intermittent in 1080p. I believe it is a ‘handshake’ issue. But can’t seem to find a solution on Google.

His PlayStation 3 runs fine in 1080p, yet when he swaps it to a different HDMI port it also goes intermittent. Though only say, once per couple of hours. Where the PlayStation is continuously on and off, no matter what HDMI port it is in. Any help really appreciated.

Crushed hopes

Do you guys know whether Treasure’s new 3DS game, Gaist Crusher God will earn a UK release? Capcom are publishing it in Japan, so there could be a chance.
Dark.Anima.X (gamertag/PSN ID/NN ID)

GC: Not unless it’s a significantly bigger hit than the first game was. In fact we’re surprised it’s getting a sequel at all, considering the poor sales. Although of course anything that keeps Treasure going is good by us.

Look, it’s a wizard!

I’ve had Destiny pre-ordered on PlayStation 4 for a few weeks now and I have to say I’m very much looking forward to giving it a blast. Particularly since I enjoyed the Alpha and Beta so much. Strangely, I had a better experience on the Alpha, maybe that just shows the varying dynamics of the actual game itself.

The major factor for me making my pre-order through Amazon is the price (£40) and the fact that I don’t have to actually go to a shop to buy it, it will just land on my hallway floor and be ready for me to pick it up as soon as I get home from work. This to me, is why pre-orders are very useful, not for extra content, but for ease. (I have a 14 month old daughter that eats up a lot of my non-working time.)

Anyway, this is an opportunity to reach out to my fellow GC reader who will be excitedly playing Destiny on PlayStation 4 when it comes out and for the future. From the interviews and previews, communication can be key when taking on the more challenging raids and MMO style instances… the prize, rare loot and lots of XP.

I don’t want to be the pathetic guy running around in tin foil armour, shooting my plasma pellet gun. Also, I’m not really a competitive multiplayer guy but I have dabbled in Battlefield and Call Of Duty and found the best experience is with a team that all have headsets and can all communicate to get the upper hand on the enemy. ‘FLANK THEM…FLAAAAANK THEM!!!!’

So, with the above in mind, if you want to add me on PSN and say hello, when the game finally comes out, we can meet up, have a chat and get some loot as a fire team. I’m going to be playing as a Warlock/Magical Wizard Space Man, if you have already decided your starting class, please let me know. Ideally looking for a varied team to take advantage of all the abilities/dance moves.

On a more random note, I really do wish that Dark Souls II came with an optional heavy metal music score when fighting bosses. Not really a massive metal music fan, but sort of wish for grimy guitar and drums when I’m slicing and dicing!
ObsoletePaul (PSN ID)

Currently playing: Dark Souls II, TxK, Surgeon Simulator, and Puppeteer.

PS: Thanks to GC for making my lunch times all the more bearable whilst I’m tucking into my under-garnished wafer thin ham sandwich and discount salt and vinegar crisps. You really do get straight to the point in your interviews and reviews, none of this dancing around a subject malarkey. Keep up the good work, I hope Metro are paying you all handsomely.

Can the average PC support the graphics of the upcoming GTA V?
Coker Babajide

GC: There’s not really any such thing as an average PC, but Rockstar will annouce the minimum and suggested specs before the game’s released. At the moment though this is their only comment on what’s required.

Considering I’ve never played Resident Evil 4, and with the sale price on Xbox Live being £4.94, is it worth buying even though you reviewed it at the time as being the worst port?
Mark

GC: If you’re sure you can’t play the Wii (or GameCube) version then it’s better than nothing.

Where the hell do I find the P.T. demo for PS4? I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find it. Please can someone help?
J.Boy

GC: We had trouble finding it too, since you can’t search for the name. It’s under Games > Demos.

What happened to your preview/interview with Battlefield Hardline? I’m not interested in the game but I’m curious as to what you asked Visceral.
Cold Waste (gamertag)

GC: It went up yesterday afternoon, if you’ve missed it.
